Oh yeah good list! Yours is the one that reminded me that I need to listen to that DJ Koze album. Camera Obscura is quickly growing on me too! But I need to listen to it more still.
Heeeeeey, Thanks Bruh bruh! but I'm just a slave to my emotions (and my depression) It's cool to see like people's completely differing taste in this thread, some I find absolutely boring, some along rockist lines, some really dig electronic music, I know Raptor Jesus loves full album experiences, I just try to find music that comforts me in this sad, lonely road of life. I just wanna like interview everybody, study their differing taste and figure out why people connect to it the way they do. Like I'm sure some people reading my list absolutely hate it, maybe hate me, lol What have been your favorite?
Jai Paul Resequenced W/ Real Titles 1 Track 2 - Strai8 Outa Mumbai 2 Track 3 - Zion Wolf 3 Track 7 - Crush 4 Track 11 - Jewel 5 Track 5 - Genevieve 6 Track 9 - Jasmine 7 Track 8 - Good Time 8 Track 13 - Merman 9 Track 16 - BTSTU 10 Track 14 - Chix 11 Track 15 - All Night I'm not saying it's right or anything, it's just my preference for the album I'd like to hear, that I enjoy more (without all the interludes) and I really didn't change much either. I left out 1 song song (Track 10 - 100,000) because It never really clicked with me and I felt it was the one that didn't fit the mood of the others, but if you enjoy that track put it between Jewel and Genevieve so there is much of a lull between Zion Wolf and Genevieve (though I like that comedown of Crush and Jewel). I hope you guys dig it, if you don't just play with it and make your own sequence.
Yeah it was, but I ended up paring it down to 10 tracks, re-sequencing it and listening to it a billion times and connecting to the songs. Whether or not they are fake doesn't matter if I dig the tunes.
Here's my fav albums of the year so far: 1 My Bloody Valentine - MBV 2 Grouper - The Man Who Died in His Boat 3 Dirty Beaches - Drifters/Love is the Devil 4 The National - Trouble Will Find Me 5 Board of Canada - Tomorrow's Harvest 6 Recycled Culture - In Transit 7 The Knife - Shaking the Habitual 8 Pure X - Crawling Up The Stairs 9 Wild Nothing - Empty Estate EP 10 Dean Blunt - The Redeemer 11 Mount Kimbie - Cold Spring Fault Less Youth 12 Classixx - Hanging Gardens 13 Jai Paul - Jai Paul 14 Autre Ne Veut - Anxiety 15 Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires of the City 16 James Blake - Overgrown 17 Disclosure - Settle 18 Deerhunter - Monomania 19 Phoenix - Bankrupt 20 Inc. - No World It's funny that MBV ended up being my favorite so far because when it came out I hated it, or really wanted to hate it but then after many many listens I ended up realizing that not only did I love it (because it represented something comforting and familiar) but that it was my favorite of the year.
Shoulda been the Pure X album, that album is as emotionally devastating as their debut, if not more so.
THIS MIGHT BE MY FAVORITE COMMENT IN ALL STEREOGUM HISTORY! THANKS RICH! LOLOLOL
Deerhunter is one of my favorite bands of the 00's. Their album Cryptograms (and to a lesser extent Microcastle) being incredibly helpful (and somewhat formative) for me during High School. I guess here are my favorite albums of theirs: 1. Cryptograms 2. Microcastle/Weird Era Cont. 3. Logos 4. Fluorescent Grey 5. Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See but Cannot Feel 6. Rainwater Cassette Exchange 7. Halcyon Digest 8. Parallax 9. Spooky Action at a Distance 10. Monomania 11. Floodlight Collective And songs (Deerhunter only): 1. Spring Hall Convert 2. Vox Humana 3. Focus Group 4. Calvary Scars II 5. Fluorescent Grey 6. VHS Dream 7. Helicopter 8. He Would Have Laughed 9. Twilight At Carbon Lake 10. Cryptograms Those are my favorite songs, the Deerhunter tracks I've connected with emotionally, some that hold very dear moments of recollection for me.
ALSO ELITE GYMNASTICS' OWN JAMES BROOKS :DDDDDD I LOVE HIS DORKY ENTHUSIASM
Pleasure wasn't a lower quality recording though it is a different circumstance in the recording process. Pleasure was recorded completely live, with no overdubs, and mixed in a way that allows the forefront of the headspace in the mix to be inhabited by the noise, which becomes its own voice of turmoil amid all the vocalized pain within the rest of the album. It is meant to sound claustrophobic, damp, dark, sad, alone - because that is the emotional headspace they were in and that the listener should inhabit when listening to it. This album is a complete change-up though still retaining much of their same characteristic.
Yeah that's is definitely Elton John vibes in the verses and SUPER Beatles vibes in the "cruuuuuuuuuuuuelllllllll" part.
It's crazy how we make this big deal at the end of every year to decree the best albums and then what happens, the rat race starts all over again, and we forget most of the albums anyway, though I guess there is always a handful of albums that connect emotionally - I'd say Kaputt is one of those for me that year too - and that's what we are all searching for in our voracious consumption. Speaking of Shabazz, they are playing the Granda on May 2nd, it's a thursday so I don't know if you can come out but IT'S SHABAZZ so I'm definitely going to be there.
While I understand your position, there are fans of The-Dream on stereogum, of which this is for. It is a little pedantic, and worn out, to suggest then that you are simply better off not clicking on a The-Dream news item and then not commenting on it, but well there I've done it. I don't mean any ill-will though. I, on the other hand, LOVE The-Dream and I really DIG this song and am REALLY looking forward to Four-Play - or what it is called now 4-Play, IV-Play???? DAMN make up your mind Dream.
If I'm not there my lil bro will probably go in my place, look out for him he looks just like me, but younger and wide-eyed. I really want to talk to you about The Knife though, so here's hoping!
DUDE DUDE DUDE, Ima - hopefully - be there, I say hopefully because I forgot to request off work, lol, but Ima skip out or something, cause I'M DA BOSS, so hopefully I see you there.
The problem isn't what is being said rather than who is saying it... I said this earlier today but to me this reads as false coming from him, it's a PR move to appeal to all the kids listening to him saying to themselves "Yeah! He's fucking punk, calling them out." He's been to SXSW before and didn't say anything then, something like this needs to be said (of the growing unfair transaction between musicians and industry; musicians and press; press and audience; musicians and audience and the sponsors with the money corralling the whole show) but not by someone who has shelled himself out for the PR scene game, his PR company proudly expounds themselves as taking an unknown and making them a critical darling, if that isn't a cause to doubt his every move and word (as false) I don't know what is...
On da inverse though man I love you, I love that you take things so seriously and are so honest and passionate as much as to wring out your personal anguish for completely strangers with no remorse, talk about fucking punk! At least you are vocal about everything, I hide my opinions (mostly in fear of reprisal, but often because it doesn't matter) I don't comment on this site that much other than to post the occasional joke or (sorta, I hope) insightful emotional response of my reaction to a particular work that has impacted me and that's my ultimate relationship to music, emotional. I value that over anything and I think that's what you have lost. I understand the need to be accepted, but none of that matters (well it doesn't matter to me, though I know it does to you) because I was rejected by people all my life, of all cultures, whether cool or not, and I took on their artifacts to appeal to them, to seem cool (did I like the music, maybe) but then I was rejected anyway which drove me into my room, into solidarity ultimately to discover youtube and allmusic finding music similar to the music the kids I thought were cool listened to which lead me to find My Bloody Valentine. I had no social drive to my enjoyment of music when In the most voracious stage of my music discovery, I had but two forces pushing me, what does this make me think (about my life etc.) and what does this make me feel (about my life etc.) how does this music reflect and augment my life (positively and negatively, truthfully and hyperbolically) I'm not sure what I'm trying to say (I'm not a very focused writer... lol) other than maybe you need to step back and think about your relationship with the product you have built your life around and how you are abusing that relationship to your own means, putting it on a pedestal to work for you, devaluating rather than actually connecting with it. Remove yourself from culture (because that doesn't matter) and social forces (because those matter) and scenes and cool kids (and uncool kids, who run the blogs now, who put in the same social stratification they were ostracized in, back into the scene) and just write because you enjoy the music and you feel you have something personal to say. Then again I'm a weirdo and my personal solution does not really work for anyone (as I learned in an argument I had recently, when I was called "too reductionist") I really wanted to say something better. Mike just be cool maybe your new all consuming hobby can be meditation? lol Idk <3 Sloth
WHOAWHOAWHOA, Hey thanks Michael_, I love Serena-Maneesh so it's cool to hear that Emil worked on that Carmen Villain album (on something new, knowing how long it takes him between albums, this is welcomed), I listened to a couple tracks and I'm super diggin it.
Love this album! One of the handful I've fallen in love with this year, so far. Also: Ford & Lopatin's album is Channel Pressure not Channel Warfare but great write up other than that, as always, Tom. (Channel Pressure was (still is) one of my top favorite albums of 2011 so I was happy to get another album that follows the same sonic template, though this one is more emotional and I connect to it a lot more than the aesthetic grab bag of Channel Pressure)
Honestly I think she's done, all the snippets and the Atlantis mixtape brought nothing new to the table and squandered the promise shown with 212 because she's been busy becoming a sorta doll for the high culture gate-keepers but I understand why that could be more worthwhile than artistic integrity and creating art, which she definitely, at this point, doesn't have.
Why a small clip when you can download the whole thing courtesy of Grampa Sloth: http://www67.zippyshare.com/v/68227476/file.html AND yes it is amazing, gets me pumped for the album Waaaaaay more than Full of Fire did.
Knowing Kevin (not that I actually know him) it is recorded in Dynamic Range/Analog instead of what has become the norm, Compression/Digital. Meaning that like Loveless you can turn this up as loud as you want and not lose one shred of detail from the track. His albums are meant to be played on hifi blaring at you, Immersing you in its cloud. So I suggest you take out the headphones and turn it up!
I'm really upset with myself because I don't really like it at all :(
This album is gonna be REAL, sheeeeeiiiittttttt.
I've always felt like Shut Up, Dude was like going with friends to the local bar after work to relax so it's weird that they did it so early this week when NEWS keeps happening! AND yes THAT MUSIC VIDEO HOLY SHITTTTTTTTTT!!!
MAN THAT FUCKING SONG! I'm pretty sure I don't exist anymore because of that song. Like in some weird Cronenbergian way it copied my mind and thoughts, exploded my brain, hollowing out my body, nestling in the cavity of my soul, letting me go on pretending to be myself. It's like they made the necronomicon into sound. Pretty much I love it. Gonna cop that real quick.
Pretty great week for new music you guys! Great Job! Here's a new Strokes song as a present: http://www.thestrokes.com/ Love, Grampa Sloth P.S. I missed the top comments because I tied '15' with Copy_Paster_Cat, to clarify on the comment I made, it was unfair to MGMT, they craft great pop songs, and I ride and die for Congrats being a good-to-great album any day (especially Someone's Missing RJ) as for Foxygen I guess it's just not my thing and I was being rude :D
As always with these guys, REALLY SOLID SONG. I haven't quit blasting this jam for the last week.
Lol Nahhhhhhh, I love Yo La Tengo, but well I guess I do act like a 70 year old man sometimes.
I saw them in Dallas in 2010 (w/ Ariel Pink opening!) they are amazing, It would be awesome if they toured again.
ARG ARG ARG, can you guys stop covering this borderline owl city bullshit. They have released and continue to release the worst music I've heard all year, maybe ever and the worst part is they attempt to pass it off as genuine (just look at all the "emotion" on his face!!!). This pop posturing, which I saw from the very beginning makes me... feel something, I'm not angry cause who cares but they should stop because this music is a waste of their time, everyone's time. They should have stuck with whatever they did before (didn't really ever listen to that) because at least they had the formula for that down. Love Sloth
This ALBUM is ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS. A pretty much perfect album.
I don't think you can say that just yet, we've had Kindred for half a year and this for a couple hours. This seems, to me, like a clear lineage from the Kindred work and really all his EPs as of late. Though songs on Kindred has a clear progression within the song structure rather than the clipped segway style of these, the progression of the songs here seem to be getting more unhinged as it went on (in Truant) and more restless, then on a dime becoming utterly serene (in Restless Sleeper). I hope he's working towards another full-lenght because these are amazing, if just for the incredible sound engineering of the pieces and then becoming transcendent taking into account their narrative.
I liked Rock and Roll Nightclub a lot more but "2" was pretty solid too. His music is kinda annoying though in that endearing stoner trickster way, like the guy who hangs out in front of skateboard shops trying to land a trick but never being able to despite his affirmations that he totally can!
SHABAZZ IS INFINITE; THEY ARE NOT SUBJECT TO TIME
The thing I like about stereogum is that their coverage is comprehensive not just to the indie sphere but to all music. Allowing for equal discourse on something as polarizing as the Taylor Swift album within the same page as people praising their choice of Fiona Apple as #1. Everything is Equal. Love you guys. Here's my favs of the year (if anyone cares). 1 Chromatics - Kill For Love w/(Running from the Sun, Symmetry) 2 How To Dress Well - Total Loss 3 Jessica Pratt - S/T 4 Kendrick Lamar - Good Kid/Maad City 5 Mount Eerie - Clear Moon w/(Ocean Roar) 6 CFCF - Exercises 7 Burial - Kindred 8 Miguel - Kaleidoscope Dream 9 Hype Williams - Black is Beautiful w/(The Narcissist II, London 2012) 10 Grizzly Bear - Shields 11 Jessie Ware - Devotion 12 LOL Boys - Changes 13 Grimes - Visions 14 Jeremih - Late Nights 15 Laurel Halo - Quarantine
Man I was already emotional and you go and do this to me, It's okay tho you'll always be my dude Corban. I enjoyed the run you had here. Your writing was always the most fun - conversational - made the content feel inclusive, like friends hanging out shooting the shit, and to me there was always a sense of personal investment in it, a wonderment, you loved music, in the way that many of us here do, with unhealthy obsession. I look forward to whatever you may do in the future. I don't know if any of that is right... lol Remember, I always have your back. Here's a farewell Sloth hug. http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mdk9r2O0Ei1rjvygjo1_400.jpg
