Like, for example, I think DeVille is a good writer with lots and lots of smart things to say but every time a new «The Week in Pop» column pops up I always ask myself: Why? Like, this music is already in the charts! Obviously lots and lots of people already enjoy it! Why waste a whole day of work (or however long he needs to write one of his columns) with something that already gets more than enough coverage? Wouldn't it be more useful to write about something that gets not written about in other places?
Or for 35 year old white music critics to feel better about themselves. Like with so many things, «Poptimism» started out as something interesting – but it went from «Isn't it weird how there is a whole world of music out there that is enjoyed by a lot of people but completely ignored by us while we continue to write the same articles about Nirvana, Pavement and Radiohead?» to «This third single from this pop album actually cures cancer and if you don't like it you're an insecure white dudebro» real fast. Like, I agree, to write comprehensible about music and ignore mainstream pop music would be super weird – but I also don't need yet another 35 year old white music critic explain to me why this album, that is predominantly aimed at teenagers, is actually better than sliced bread. I mean, wasn't the idea behind this blog – or other sites in the same vein like Pitchfork – to cover and discover new music that gets ignored by the mainstream music press (the Rolling Stones' and Uncuts of this world)? Why in god's name do I need to consistently read articles about music that gets widespread coverage anyway (and sells pretty well too)? tl;dr: I'd rather read ten articles about Yves Tumor, Mitski and Nilüfer Yanya then another piece about Taylor Swift, Justin Timberlake or Cardi B.
Also: For a surprisingly large amount of people from an earlier generation I know personally this was their first vinyl single they bought
A 10 from me. One of THE great songs.
File under: Soulless and hollow music.
But then again: Didn't Hynes used to record white ppl country under the moniker Lightspeed Champion?
In 2016 there was a 3-day event at Michelberger Hotel in Berlin where The National, Bon Iver etc participated that had basically the same concept. It was hanging out with the musicians who played in different formations. All in all pretty cool, but it was clearly billed as exactly that in advance. You can‘t transform a regular festival to something like this without clearly announcing it.
Wait. Was there actually R&B music playing in Black Panther? I only saw it once – and the only song from the soundtrack I remember actually being played in the movie was „All the Stars“ – over the end credits though.
As someone who grew up speaking German I can assure you: "Zeitgebers" is not only not a German word, it would also be grammatically incorrect.
My boy Ezra comin for that Oscar?
What‘s Bill Callahan up to? He‘s more than overdue for a new one
The Spotify algorithm gets better with every week. It looks like it has started writing whole songs tailored to my taste. p cool!
Hm, weird, contrary to, um... everyone else here, I think „Up All Night“ is his best song in at least 12 years and „Wow“ was one of my favorite songs of last year. Guess I‘m in the minority here.
The thing is I wish nothing more than the Killers to be good again – I still looove Hot Fuss and Sam's Town, I also really liked BFs 2nd solo album but man oh man this is bad.
This is really good - but I can't help myself wondering how this sound would sound if Ezra sang it
Missing Zeal & Ardor and Schammasch
Hm weird, I thought both "Endless Flowers" and "Crimes of Passion" were about the best possible records you could do in that genre. The last one was not so good, true. Never liked the first record
Hmm. Guess it just reminded me of "Just Ain't Gonna Work Out" by Mayer Hawthorne
What song is he quoting in the beginning?
There's a Yo La Tengo tribute in the song, right?
I saw him perform last Thursday and it was MIND BLOWINGLY good. They're playing as a three piece now and it's amazing. The translation would be "Woman in Moon, Stars walking" btw.
Broken Social Scene - Feel Good Lost (their underrated pre-fame debut ambient album. It's like a warm blanket!) K.C. Accidental - Anthems for the Could've Bin Pills
Never understood why everyone went apeshit about "Rip It Off". But their very last record, let me tell you, THAT was an amazing record. At least they went out on top.
Uhhhh... Rez? (also: 8 Ball)
Writers' Block is one of my favorite records of the aughts. Such a shame everyone keeps saying PBJ are a one hit winder. That record is awesome from start to finish. The first two records are great too!
Which is totally fine, it's just weird that the album seems completely finished. There's a tracklist and everything...
Iceage are frkm DennRk.
Huh? Where exactly does it say that he wants to retire the moniker?
Another promising band ruined by Columbia
Part Six was released this year as well.
You can't really write sentences like "Nick Mulvey, Kate Tempest … Seriously, who the heck are those people?" on a music site, in my opinion. What's the point of writing something like that? Make yourself familiar with the acts - or don't. But don't write something like that. JFC.
"Very poetic, Whitest Boy Alive! And very unnecessary capitalization!" That's because those are both song and album titles of the band.
"Did Kings Of Convenience break up? This is not a rhetorical question; I can’t find confirmation either way" Are you serious? How about checking their official Facebook page? It takes literally 10 seconds to see that they've been playing concerts every summer since 2009. So, no they haven't broken up. Same goes for The Whitest Boy Alive - he just takes it very slow with all of his projects.
Can't believe "Sacrilege" didn't make the cut
You Are The Quarry #8? What? Is it International Clickbait Week again?
aaand my weekend is ruined.
