fwiw, if you worked from age 18-65 and earned the median US wage you would make about $1.25 million. though i guess US median wage is over 2.5x world wage
another aspect of music culture is how we hold onto archaic terms and assign them new meaning. im sure everyone’s heard this before, but i tend to forget- the term ‘album’ comes from a collection of singles that were put together in a photo album sort of packaging… pretty similar to the status quo of the streaming era.
anyway my theory is that big names like Drake and whoever will continue putting out these bloated collections of tunes, knowing people will pay attention to the release and that at least a few songs will find an audience.
for smaller acts it’s a bit different. with the increased accessibility to recording equipment, only artists who can constantly put out worthwhile songs will be remembered. it only takes a dud or two for people to move on to the next hot thing. EP length projects are riskier and tend to get less critical praise/attention, but it’s possible to put out a cohesive, no-filler EP (or b-side thingy) during a relatively off year and stay in the public gaze (i'd throw stuff like mac's another one into this category too). or drop some new singles and be the indie rock version of katy perry between albums 2&3 where her album was insanely popular over a year after dropping cause of how they scheduled the radio singles. but of course with any of these options you need the tunes to back it up.
the first and last section are based on that first list, the middle i reworked a touch to help the harsh transitions:
Low Lights, Famous, Pt1, Pt2, Waves, Highlights, Freestyle 4 (or Feedback, but not both), I love Kanye, FML, Real Friends, Wolves (1st version), ULB. then the bonus tracks are the same but delete facts+intermission.
i really think ULB works better as a closer and he switched it because it was cool way to start the MSG thing.
i'm a few weeks behind on new releases...also i feel really bad, but i just don't like the new Chance. almost liked it my 2nd listen, but couldn't get through the 4th. has some jams on it, but way too much clunky optimism. still rooting for him though- when he saved me from pretending to get into the j cole set at bonnaroo i lost it
too early in the year to spend serious time so this is based on my lastfm play counts/trying to factor album length, release date, and overall gut feeling:
1. Kendrick - Untitled Unmastered
2. Kanye - Pablo (my modified tracklist, move to 6 with his)
3. Pinegrove - Cardinal
4. Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool
5. Pup - The Dream is Over
6. Car Seat Headrest - Teens of Denial
7. Kevin Morby - Singing Saw
8. Modern Baseball - Holy Ghost
9. Teen Suicide - It's the Big Joyous Celebration
10. Anderson Paak - Malibu
nothing has completely blown me away, but 1-5 came close.. might need to make room for Bowie & Sturgill.
i obviously need to spend more time with it , but so far i'm less impressed with this than acid rap or surf. maybe (probably) im approaching it completely wrong but only a handful of tracks seemed especially vital. hopefully some of that can be attributed to the datpiff mix
it's too late to cancel my airbnb so ill be in austin anyway (coming from screwston so it's no big deal). are there any locals here and if so which venues should i keep an eye on for shows? seems like most of the big ones are already booked and i'd rather not do drunken 6th street for the 10th time
On my custom playlist it ends I Love Kanye, FML, Real Friends, Wolves (original version), ULB.
I love kanye to FML is a pretty smooth transition and the themes work well with that lexapro line too. Ending with ULB and having the bonus tracks as is (minus Intermission and Facts, of course) is the way to go.
there was someone on gearslutz claiming that French Montana jacked one of these beats. kinda interesting thread on samples/copyright stuff if ur into that stuff
