I'm sorry, but I don't think you understand how Twitter works. Just because some douchebags use hashtags as a "cool" (read: annoying) way of saying something, the true concept is that of a filter that enables more effective searching and categorizing. The PD was totally right to include the relevant tag in their tweet. The hit-and-run is 100% connected to SXSW. The shows are cancelled, people are injured and they are looking for additional information about the incident. They are intentionally trying to reach people attending the festival - and more specifically - people who witnessed the crime. If you're implying that including the tag sucks because people have to hear bad news when they are looking for news on the next secret show or pop-up Booze-Popsicle stand, well, I can't really go there...

Why are guys like this allowed to post homophobic, xenophobic hate speech and all anyone really does is laugh about it? haven't the Scots been through enough?

A few comments/questions: I am sure Cobain would have loved that band. Monster Energy Drink stickers, American Flag pants, Affliction shirts. It will certainly be as big as Graceland. No doubt. What is with that awkward shot where the news guy is walking up the road behind all of those unsuspecting guys on the sidewalk? Does that one guy have a beer in his hand? Why didn't they interview any of the dissenters? I think that maybe the only one against Kurt Cobain day is the newscaster.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say that what they're doing is hard to understand as an American, but it just seems to me like they are asking to get killed. Also, I just have to comment on the guy in the "collective": Don't do something like that and then act like a bitch when you get a bloody nose. The women are like 300x tougher than you. I am willing to listen to what they have to say, but it all seems so broad. I've listened to interviews, etc. I just don't understand their point. They have to know that what they are doing is going to affect little change, so why do it? Why not take a more effective route with the fame? Do more interviews, etc. If you watch their video, it all seems so dramatic with the background music, etc. The Telegraph video above just seems kind of stupid, like super-hyped highschool fights that (thank God, in retrospect) never really amount to more than a few shoves and insults.

I understand his issues with porn. I am not an anti-sex person, but I think the extreme access to porn is a negative thing for the younger generation. It cheapens sex, and not just from an ethical perspective. I am younger than Drew, but of an age where we used to stay up late and try to see HBO boobs through TV static. It made things much more exciting once you actually started dating. You cannot un-invent something, though.

Chris, I want to like you based on your side of the argument, but now I am going to pretend to believe that there are secret built-in wireless systems just to be on the other guys' side. Win Butler is definitely a dork. I think most of us know that... There are plenty of successful dorks out there. He is also a rock star, but those things are not mutually exclusive. Win is a dork that makes fantastic music. I think it would have looked better if Win simply would have played dumb to the negative review. That would have cut Richards much, much deeper. What is with the sentiment around Stereogum that it is perfectly fine for Win to call himself a rock star simply because it is true? Would it be fine for him to walk around saying, "I'm not a dork because I am rich and white?" Some things are better left unsaid. In my opinion, the second you call yourself a rock star, you cease to be just that...

I'm not sure why you are calling it a waste. Can you explain? The money will go to a good cause, presuming the red tape is eliminated. I'm not a particularly large proponent of prison outreach - I'm certainly not against it - but I think it trumps the $30k going to some street marketing/promotion team. We all know that is where it would have been spent had the prize gone to another winner. More importantly, though, the shortlist was somewhat weak, and the prize is given to the band who makes the best record, right? I think it is wrong to suggest that the prize should go to whoever the panel thinks will spend the money in a certain way. I would think most would agree. I am interested to hear your thought process on why you'd call it a waste. I am also intrigued by your suggestion that it is a "lifetime achievement" award. Do you not think Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend! was good in and of itself? I'd rank it much higher than the others on the shortlist.

Okay, so if Kanye had been standing with Kim and - out of a fit of passion - punched the punk for talking that way, I would be okay with it. The fact that he arrived later and went looking for the guy in another office is just scary. No good came from this: Kanye will get charged and the racist punk gets a payday. How do you not get charged for going after someone? I mean, it isn't like the judge is going to say, "Yeah, since you're Kanye and the guy deserved it, I guess it is fine that you pummeled him."

I just wanted to chime in to say that I was one of those kids in 2nd grade watching the Challenger launch on live TV in class. I went to Catholic school, and as soon as the shuttle exploded, the TVs were turned off and we went straight to church to have a special Mass said for the crew. I still remember the priest talking about the bravery of the crew. Definitely a memorable moment for me. More so than most disasters that have happened since, save for 9/11.

When asked about year-end rock that is important, Wayne - after admitting that they are not his thing - says Arcade Fire got together with James Murphy and tried to make something important, adding that people are into the album. Context is everything.

Ben, I downvoted you because it seemed like you were using this as an opportunity to make a political statement on sentencing. Hell, I agree with you for the most part but this is a case where you're just going to come off looking like an asshole trying to argue against longer sentences. I am willing to bet that greater than 50% of the people currently locked up in the US are in for longer than they deserve, but this sicko isn't the guy you want to get behind when stating that case. This guy deserves every day (and more). Save that battle for the next time a lead singer gets a marijuana possession charge.

It doesn't matter. This guy won't make it a month once he is off whatever initial protection he might have at the outset. Hell, I'd be surprised if the guards don't let him get ripped apart on the first day, however terrible that might be in principle. Even with a forgiving heart, it is hard to have empathy for someone who abuses babies, sexually or otherwise....

But it did work. You see, someone in the Virgin ad group got their sponsored post up on the site, which was what they were asked to do. Stereogum got paid, which is good for them. We're all talking about #BreakFree, which is all Virgin cares about, even if it is how stupid the post is... When it comes down to it, you're aware of #BreakFree now, and it isn't like they did something so offensive that you will avoid their service (or this promotion) due to the post. In the end, this is actually a success. Sometimes it is frustrating, but marketing in this manner works.
