I want a Behind the Music on the meeting where they decided to a string-quartet version of Gaga's "Applause" was the perfect song for this trailer
Definitely feels like she's too currently popular to be doing this. In a decade when she might be at the Katy Perry stage of her career, sure. Then again I'd forgotten Miley did it five years ago, so who knows? Maybe it's genuinely fun? Or just crazy money
Kate Bush, Devo, Jay-Z, Iron Maiden, and Tina Turner would be a solid list. So I'm sure they'll pick none of them.
But what does Jo Calderone think about voting?
The title line sounds vaguely like "The Longest Time." But only really loosely.
Need an entire ep on the best RHPC song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zGk0k34tGs
Second the book recommendation! Christian rockers often seem boring and squeaky-clean AF, but this was a complex dude, a huge star in his field, chafed against it, somewhat self-destructive, and eventually rejected by the industry he helped create. I actually don't dig his music as much - recordings sound pretty dated to me - but book def worth a read.
Just give 'em to Randy Newman. I haven't even heard this particular song or score, but he's earned an Oscar a year til he drops.
Exactly. To rather dramatically switch genres, a few years ago at Newport Folk Fest they had a surprise headliner Sat night. The rumors got ridiculous - people were saying Paul McCartney's yacht had been spotted nearby that afternoon (what does he have to do with Newport exactly? Or folk?). It ended up being Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings leading a superjam of Dylan songs. Objectively right up Newport attendees' alley! But still felt underwhelming, like air deflating when they came out.
And here's another, more succinct approach: https://vimeo.com/247508386
Opening track had me worried (just sounds like a 33RPM record played on 45 speed), but next two tracks are jams. Is this actually going to be…good??
There's a whole 33 1/3 book on that album coming out next fall (assuming I get outta the comments section and finish writing it by my deadline next week…)
Billie's currently at third (tied with a bunch of people). Missy's "Work It" and Foreigner's "Waiting for a Girl Like You" tied at 10 weeks. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Billboard_Hot_100_chart_achievements_and_milestones#Most_weeks_at_number_two_(without_hitting_number_one)
Yeah, I'd guess it'll maybe get one more week on top, based on people streaming to celebrate (plus the old people who've somehow still never heard it reading about this in the Times tomorrow and checking it out) and then begin its gradual slide down. Though I hope it keeps going forever!
I agree with most of your points, but just to clarify on the last bit: Gaslight sold out Bowery in seconds. Many of those went to scalper bots (ugh), but the tickets going for $200 on Stubhub (double ugh) were indeed being purchased by people. So there is a big demand for them - just not from the Gov Ball crowd, apparently.
Yes! I will defend Chumbawamba until my dying breath. I can understand having gotten sick of Tubthumping during its heyday, but it's a fine song, and funnier when you realize it's satirizing the frat boy types who unironically adopted it as an anthem. The band's weirder Brit-folk stuff is even better though, and often a lesson in political history. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05j25PHA7l8
Thanks! Do you have a link? Not coming up in a Spotify search (which, given that capabilities of Spotify's search function, is not hugely surprising)
One of Bruce Springsteen's early bands used to have two guys who just sat at onstage playing checkers at every show.
This topic indirectly led me to his NBC promo for this year's awards. Yikes! That grin, those huge photos of Depp/Jolie…yech! http://www.hulu.com/watch/317794/golden-globes-ricky-gervais-is-back#s-p1-sr-i0
First song "Beth," second song "Rest."
