Couldn't pick one Turnstile song that stands out above the others. Whole album too good. But I'll have more to say about Turnstile in another year-end article soon.
I've written about this before. I actually think Keanu is the best action star ever, in history, but I didn't want to try to make the Keanu > Bruce Lee argument in a #1s intro. https://www.avclub.com/john-wick-solidified-keanu-reeves-as-one-of-the-greates-1820411445 No A-list actor has ever taken the art of the action movie as seriously as Keanu does. The martial-arts choreography stuff that he can do is beyond impressive, even as he edges into his late 50s. The stunts are fucking insane. The level of time that his career covers is unprecedented. He's got classics on classics: Point Break, Speed, Matrix 1-3, Wick 1-3. For his directorial debut, motherfucker went to Hong Kong to make a Chinese-language underground-fighting-tournament vehicle for his Matrix stunt coordinator, and it fucking slaps. See Man Of Tai Chi if you haven't. Keanu also helped Matrix stunt guys get the job to direct John Wick, and that movie has been hugely influential on the whole global action-cinema landscape. Keanu single-handedly took us out of the era of Bourne and Taken clones. He's the fuckin man.
It's Hype Williams. He only made one movie, and it's a classic.
It definitely ended up being more work than an album review. My plan backfired.
I have never once, in my entire life, claimed to be an objective critic.
We won't get to my teenage years until September '92. But yeah, we're in a deep memory-zone with these things right now.
sorry vails, I messed this up. It was supposed to be a 6.
We're not like best buds or anything, but I've interviewed him a bunch of times and we've hung out occasionally.
Here's what I wrote at the time: https://www.villagevoice.com/2007/07/31/live-lightning-proof-soca-king-machel-montano/
It was great! Really fun! Those giant free shows on the high school football field in Flatbush were always a good time.
That's actaully a typo, it was supposed to be a 6. Corrected now. Sorry, Amy Grant.
Wrote this column before the terrible Dolph news came out.
Best odds say it was the Ninja Turtles arcade game. My family drove cross-country that summer, and I played Ninja Turtles anytime I could find the arcade game, which was pretty often. But yeah, no, I don't remember.
I'd say it actually happens fairly often these days; it's just that the majors will snap up a song the moment it starts to go viral.
He plays drums in Journey now, which is wild to me.
They said our name on High Fidelity, too. But yes, that You're The Worst namecheck made me feel very proud.
Damn, yeah, I fucked up. "Ice Ice Baby" is definitely better than "Penny Lane."
I had fun! Richmond crowd was pretty into Turnstile, which might have something to do with hardcore being deeply woven into RVA culture.
I'm three months too old to be a millennial.
Honestly, I got busy, and I haven't done the Fugees one. I might get back to it at some point, if they let me.
I had no idea, and this makes so much sense.
Legal in VA, baby!
why we gotta pay you when you'll just point out the typos in the comments section?
I mean, I did get to do Billy Jack already.
I said "biggest." If we're talking about "best," Beans crushes everyone.
She's on "Undewater Boi."
look i dunno how long i'll be able to keep one-upping myself with this shit. kinda painted myself into a corner with "eat a seal"
Thought about making an exception for Adult. in all the electroclash slander. They were good, but they weren't cram-in-a-distracting-aside good imo.
Who is "we"? The picture is you? I'm not trying to fuck up a DIY space. That's not the intent here. I also don't like being called a snitch. That's not what that is. If I'm putting a DIY space in actual danger, then I'll change some things around. But what I'm seeing in those comments up there is pure and simple assholism, and I rarely find assholism to be a compelling case. With this particular venue, the show last month was all over Instagram, and people were shooting off fireworks. Nobody was trying to keep a low profile. So is this post a clear and present danger or are your comments just assholes tryna asshole? Talk to me like a human being, and we can figure something out. Or don't.
I'm not one of you, either, singlepurpose.
took out the name of the spot, but if y'all are really mad about it, come up to me at the next show and do something. i'll be the seven-foot guy.
I was on the 7/8 border, and the rapping was the decider for me.
Yeah, some of the bands put their own individual versions up on the streaming services, but the whole thing is on bandcamp.
