Their first album arrived with no real warning or context and really caught people by surprise. While this album is moodier and not as poppy, it's being met with huge expectations. It's not really fair to measure the album based on your reaction to it ("not as impressed as I was with the last one"), when you're on a totally different playing field. If you're bored by it, fine. But you'd probably be bored by their first album if it came out again. It's minimalistic. On purpose. Obviously, to each his own, but it doesn't make sense to call it a sophomore slump or anything like that.

Funny how subjective this whole thing is...I'd share your top 3, but then I'd follow with Demolition and Rock N Roll. No point to make, here, I just love those albums. Especially Demolition. Some days it would be my #2 behind Heartbreaker. It's been hard to give any of his albums repeated listens since Jacksonville City Nights. There have been some great songs ("Oh My God..."), but I'm getting used to being bummed out by each new record.

Saying, "Mos Def, who is still insisting that we all call him Yasiin Bey now" does come off as belittling a serious life choice (be it religious or artistic or for any other reason). But I think he was just being smug. Which is just as worthless.

I always thought that this was so obvious. As At The Drive In, they were able to temper each other perfectly, but they were unchecked as Mars Volta and Sparta. It's like super-group in reverse.

How in the world does this sound anything like Band Of Horses?...or sound like Mercer has been listening to them... Sounds to me like he's been listening to some David Bowie. Really, though, I can't imagine any connection to Band Of Horses...this one wasn't even produced by Phil Ek.

I loved The Rip Tide, too. I was honestly pretty shocked about the album's lukewarm reception. I think it's his most focused record.

Totally agree. Section 80 should have gotten way more love this year. Don't know why they lost their shit over A$AP Rocky and much much less with Kendrick Lamar.

I think it's because he wrote and recorded a gigantic motherfucking fantastic album this year. This list isn't the top 50 collections of lyrics of the year. There's more to consider. And anyway, I'd take Bon Iver's beautiful sounding nonsense over silliness like Best Coast or whatever.
