Why would this make Radiohead "the bad guy?" Lana Del Rey isn't some mom and pop bandcamp operation; she's playing the Pepsi Center for chrissakes! They are supposed to just let this mind-numbingly obvious plagiarism of their work by a big-time hockey arena-playing artist stand?

Wow, this might be the boldest ripoff I have ever heard (at least since uncredited sampling was made illegal). Identical chord progression, identical song structure and similar melodies. How does something like this even get released by an actual record label?

What sort of hogwash is the notion that "speed has no practical purpose in music?" That is like saying "brightness has no practical purpose in the visual arts" or "spice has no practical purpose in cooking."

You write all that, yet can anyone or anything possibly be dumber than almost all of the music that is regularly covered in this very column?

Nickelback's music does sound cynically constructed. But there are many a sacred cow around the 'Gum and other blog sites whose music sounds every bit as cynically constructed (if not even more so) albeit to appeal to a different group and/or class of people. Why is it that rock is just about the one genre of music that isn't viewed/listened to through the credulous, kindly "if it works, it works" poptimistic lens that now dominates critical thought throughout the blogosphere?

While it goes without saying that this is the most interesting band in the world that garner "general interest" website coverage, I'm finding this to be pretty underwhelming. Some beautiful stuff to be sure, but it sounds overly fussed with, Yorke's voice is sounding pretty ragged and they sound exactly like "they have written themselves into a grey, glitchy corner" far more than TKOL did (or Yorke's other work since then). Since this is a premature evaluation, I might be wrong (compared to which, this new version True Love Waits is completely bled white)...

The overarching goal here is apparently to propagandize people to move them from listening to 2000s era iconoclasts like Sufjan, Dirty Projectors, AnCo, Radiohead, etc. to 2010s establishment figures like Kanye, Beyonce, Taylor Swift, etc., and do it so gradually that they hardly even notice. However, occasionally a bridge to far is attempted and it crumbles. Hence, The 1975 ATOW.

I truly believe that Kanye was a huge fan when the name "David Bowie" was trending everywhere on January 11, 2016. Also, the KC sample was mind-numblingly obvious. When you first read Kanye was sampling Crimson, was there any doubt what he was sampling? Did you think, maybe, "hey maybe it's 'Elephant Talk' or 'The Watch' or 'Starless'?" But then you realized that Kanye IS THE 21st century schizoid man! And that Fripp and Sinfield came up with that mainly as something Kanye could make use of 40 years down the line.

Also, Kanye? Yeah, I'm sure he was probably broken up about when Rykodisc lost the rights to the Bowie catalogue and the new rights holder stopped reissuing the albums with B-sides and outtakes.

No more or less ground than MIA was. Actually I didn't know that was a sample for years and had been giving MIA way more credit than necessary.

My problem is WTF does Lorde have to do with David Bowie? Compared to her, even Lady Gaga is the combined forces of Iggy Pop, Mick Jagger, Bryan Ferry and Thom Yorke. It's a tribute to the man who travelled everywhere from "Rubber Band" to "I Can't Give Everything Away" from that girl you know from that one song that sounded like "Paper Planes" and that other song that sounds like "Paper Planes" (incidentally, Paper Planes itself is a pretty serious lift of a song by The Clash, like to the point that you wouldn't know which is which until the vocal comes in). On the other hand, it's cool to see Mike Garson at center stage. That guy's phenomenal!

I'd say it's closer to being his Shark Sandwich.

People, do you realize that you are just consuming oxygen that would be far better utilized by Kanye West? Imagine that you are an O2 molecule floating around hoping to some day contribute to providing energy for Kanye West, only to find yourself in some non-Kanye's lungs? Your whole existence, ever since being fused in the shell of a red supergiant star billions of years ago, was to supply vital energy to the artist who is 50% superior to Stanley Krubrick, but then you wind up catalyzing the metabolic processes of some inferior specimen? And, on top of this waste of your utility, you are then bound to a carbon atom for your troubles, hoping vainly that solar radiation or some floral life form will shear you of this interloper so that you get another chance to possibly contribute to the only human being that truly matters? So next time you breathe, remember you are merely diverting resources that are better served elsewhere (that is to say, Yeezwhere).

I think its weird that you think "shoegaze"" bands would give a shit about Kanye, much less be lining up to cover one of his songs.
