New Guillemots Video - "Falling Out Of Reach"

Guillemots' "Falling Out Of Reach" falls in line with some of the great, delicately emotional tracks the band introduced itself with on Through The Windowpane, like "Made Up Love Song #43," or even "Blue Would Still Be Blye." The track...  CONTINUE READING NEW GUILLEMOTS VIDEO - "FALLING OUT OF REACH"»

New Guillemots Video - "Get Over It"

The great Guillemots already hit us with a free MP3 of " Kriss Kross" earlier this month, and the gear-up for their forthcoming second-effort Red continues here with a great clip for "Get Over It." This is the second time...  CONTINUE READING NEW GUILLEMOTS VIDEO - "GET OVER IT"»

New Guillemots - "Kriss Kross"

Guillemots will make ya ... hit this link and fork over your email addy for a free MP3 of the adventurously titled "Kriss Kross," from the band's forthcoming album Red. The troupe's over-the-top pop won us over a couple years ago, for its emotion and its ambition and its lack of disposable '90s hip hop references (still safe here: note the two "s"s in "Kriss"), so new stuff is good news. This tune, which isn't the first single (that'd be "Get Over It," streaming for a snip at MySpace), starts with some menacing fuzz bass, sirens, and a modal, violin-and-typewriter (both of which they play at shows, btw) melody -- like a criminal drama theme song, almost -- before breaking into Fyfe Dangerfield's trademark exuberance. It krisses and krosses from dark to light, and although it settles into a sort of mundane, major-keyed ride out, it's a satisfying LP peek.

Guillemots @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC 5/9/06

Seemed reasonable to turn our attention to stage when the house lights cut ... but Guillemots like to experiment, and didn't waste any time. Like a make-shift marching band, the group struck up a racket in the balcony, banging drums,...  CONTINUE READING GUILLEMOTS @ BOWERY BALLROOM, NYC 5/9/06»

Band To Watch: The Neighbourhood Council

After two weeks of reader-tipped BTWs from Lawrence, Kansas, we mentioned there seemed to be something going on in that city, despite William S. Burroughs up and dying a few years ago. After the proclamation went out, we received notes...

Premature Evaluation: The Walkmen - You & Me

Before we got to soak-in the woozy organ and raw yelps of "In the New Year," the last taste we had of the Walkmen was that one-off "Lemon Hill." As we mentioned then, the Men said "Lemon" wasn't "exactly in...

Take our ink-stained hands and join us at the OldStand, where Jon McMillan goes to remind everyone what an honest-to-goodness music magazine is supposed to look like. Okay, I'll admit it: I fell for the cover trick. It's Kerrang!, right?...
