Feist – “How Come You Never Go There (Beck Remix)”

Beck and Feist are both single-named alt-pop icons with mass appeal; they are a natural pairing. And now they’ve linked up for a remix, with Beck taking on Feist’s slow-burning torch tune “How Come You Never Go There.” He chops up the song’s vocals and horn-honks a bit and adds some big, loping drums. Music-royalty singer/actress Charlotte Gainsbourg previously teamed up with Beck to make 2009′s ridiculously pleasant IRM album, and Mr. Hansen also has his hands all over Gainsbourg’s forthcoming album Stage Whispers. Beck wrote and produced Gainsbourg’s lush dance song “Paradisco,” and you can stream it below.

The Bridge School Benefit began celebrating its 25th year yesterday with performances by Dave Matthews, Eddie Vedder, Beck, Arcade Fire, Mumford & Sons, and of course organizer Neil Young. Beck Covers John Martyn

The beloved British folk-rock singer-songwriter John Martyn died back in 2009, and the new double-CD compilation Johnny Boy Would Love This features folks like Devendra Banhart, Vashti Bunyan, and Martyn collaborator Phil Collins paying Martyn tribute by covering his songs. We’ve already posted Robert Smith’s take on “Small Hours.” And now here’s another cut from the tribute album: Beck doing a downbeat, string-drenched version of “Stormbringer.”

Serge Gainsbourg Tribute @ Hollywood Bowl, Hollywood 8/28/11

It was a beautiful evening at the Hollywood Bowl for the KCRW-sponsored tribute to Serge Gainsbourg curated by Beck. The all star line up included Ed Droste (Grizzly Bear), Victoria Legrand (Beach House), Mike Patton (Faith No More), Sean Lennon & Charlotte Kemp Muhl (The Ghost Of A Saber Tooth Tiger), Zola Jesus, Lulu Gainsbourg, and up-and-coming rocker Joseph Gordon-Levitt all backed by Beck’s Sea Change era band. After playing a number of classic Gainsbourg tunes, Jean Claude Vannier conducted a recreation of Gainsbourg’s album Historie De Melody Nelson. C’était magnifique. Charlotte Gainsbourg – “Terrible Angels” Video

“Terrible Angels” is the title track from Charlotte Gainsbourg’s forthcoming EP. Beck produced the song just like he produced Gainsbourg’s IRM album, but it’s a straightforwardly glammy dance-pop stomper, and it doesn’t really have any of his fingerprints. It’s basically a toned-down version of a Dr. Luke production, and it’s the last thing I expected to hear from Gainsbourg and Beck. Maybe that’s the point.

Stephen Malkmus Mirror Traffic Details

Matador announced Stephen Malkmus’s latest album with The Jicks today via their Matablog. The record’s called Mirror Traffic, and it was produced by Beck Hansen. Malkmus and Hansen recorded the album in early 2010, but because of Pavement’s touring schedule, they put Mirror Traffic on hold until they had more time. Matador praises Stephen Malkmus’s “rapier wit” and “casual virtuosity” in the post, words that easily describe Beck as well. I’m guessing that they worked well together. They, at least, fulfilled every ’90s kid’s dream slacker collaboration.

The Matablog also says that this is drummer Janet Weiss’s last album with the Jicks. Joggers drummer Jake Morris will take over for their upcoming tour. (Weiss just finished a tour with Wild Flag.)

Mirror Traffic is out 8/23 via Matador.

The Lonely Island & Beck – “Attracted To Us”

We knew Beck was one of the many guests on the upcoming Lonely Island album Turtleneck And Chain. Now you can hear him on “Attracted To Us,” a fast and bubbly singalong that reminds me of the Mae Shi because of the shouted/chanted group chorus and synths, and Childish Gambino for all the shoutouts to nerdy/hippie/Asian girls. Beck does a verse and part of the chorus, but you can also hear him in the background during the other chaotic, layered parts. Listen at Some Kind Of Awesome.

It’s a world away from the title track. Turtleneck And Chain is out 5/10.

Thurston Moore – “Benediction” (Produced By Beck)

Thurston Moore’s newest solo album, the Beck Hansen-produced Demolished Thoughts, is out in May via Matador. It was recorded in Los Angeles and Northampton, MA. The title comes from The Faith’s “It’s Time.” (It’s also probably still the name of Moore’s hardcore band with J Mascis, Don Fleming, Andrew W.K., Awesome Allison, etc.) For a sense of what the collection sounds like, here’s the pretty, 6-minute folk love song “Benediction.”
