After Beulah called it quits six years ago Miles Kurosky, the band’s singer and songwriter, got married (to a woman he met on the final Beulah tour), had reconstructive surgery on his shoulder (twice), and was hospitalized for kidney trouble. The result is his first solo album, the highly anticipated Frank Lloyd Wright-referencing The Desert of Shallow Effects. It’s only “solo” in titling: More than two dozen musicians join Kurosky with sundry stringed instruments, keyboards, horns, etc., on the 10 tracks. He produced it and old Beulah-mate Eli Crews (Deerhoof, Why?) engineered. “I Can’t Swim”‘s a good place to get started: Kurosky crammed a million details (and clearly a lot of living) into the ambitiously skewed pop song. If you find yourself missing vintage ’60s nodding Elephant 6 and of Montreal give you a headache, this should make you smile.

Ex-Beulah crooner Miles Kurosky has himself a MySpace and a new song (and a bird). Tipster Ferg tells us other Beulah alum Bill Swann sent the link to the band’s mailing list. And, as Kurosky writes in a post over at his MySpace titled “Cinco de Mayo 2008,” with a Current Mood of “virginal”:

Hello Friends, it’s May 5th and I’m officially on Myspace. How did I ever live without it?? Anyway, I’ve posted a song called “An Apple for an Apple.” I think it’s the final version, but who knows, it could change. Hopefully you all like it. That’s all, XO, M.

Nothing more needs be said. For those of you who miss the San Francisco E6-ers, it’ll be a good reminder of those halcyon days, especially the mid-tune sing-a-long and continual build. Listen.

Robert Schneider’s no stranger to the graceful sell-out — and it’s 2007, so spare us the mock outrage — but it is curious to see Target get all E6y on our asses. It’s not just the aforementioned Apples In Stereo that have a song convincing you to buy low, low priced goods (“Go”); Beulah’s “Silver Lining” is also collecting royalty checks cut from the Target Corporation. Can’t find the YouTube links (anyone?), but maybe we’ll do a commercial clip roundup when they make a Target out of Of Montreal. “Suffer For (Affordable) Fashion,” perhaps? Don’t be surprised.
