A Post About Post

Björk launched Post‘s kaleidoscopic mix of electronic and dance music, her inimitable voice, and fantastical, personal lyrics into a very different, almost alien post-grunge landscape. In 1995 Bush (the band) released Sixteen Stone, Slash’s Snakepit debuted with It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere, Tommy Lee married Pamela Anderson for the first time, and Shannon Hoon died of… More »

Björk Talks Tibet And Kosovo, Releases “Wanderlust” Video Stills

“Declare Independence” is undoubtedly one of the best tracks from Volta. Unfortunately, the technically complex Michel Gondry video fails to tap the track’s emotional power, but when Björk performs the anthem live and does something as seemingly simple as give a shout out to actual States or prospective States fighting for self-governing, the goosebumps start… More »

Stereogum’s 30 Favorite Live Shows Of 2007

We saw a lot of concerts this year! You probably did too, if you’re the sort to be checking music blogs on your downtime over holiday break, so let’s all trade notes. Stereogum’s Amrit Singh kicks things off with a detailed, list-friendly recap of the earplug-necessitating, beer-soaked year that was.

New Björk Video – “Declare Independence”

Well shit, this is pretty great. Michel Gondry tag teams with Björk for the seventh time (and first in a decade, taking it back to B’s “Bachelorette” days) and he conjures a concept for the Icelandic queen and her army of me. See Björk’s using those same strings that slavishly bind to rupture the system… More »

Björk “Declare Independence” Video Preview

After letting a fan conjure the atmosphere for mechanistic, hyper-percussive “Innocence,” Björk enlisted old standby Michel Gondry to transform punky, flag-planting Volta standout “Declare Independence” into video form way out there in Long Island City. The French director, who’s now done seven of B’s videos, concocted a futuristic backdrop that looks superbly complex in a… More »

In Case You Missed It: Last Night’s Party (Feat. Radiohead Covering Björk)

So Radiohead hosted a party yesterday (hosted, get it?). Everybody was invited, but not everybody could get in — or get online, as it were. But here’s some good news for those who found the party crashed due to tech/bandwith issues, here’s a replay. Here’s Part One: Entanglement, featuring a reworking of “Harrowdown Hill.” It’… More »

Foo Fighters, Jon Bon Jovi Get Punched Just Before Eating (And Björk & Charles Barkley Do Iconoclasts)

This week’s SNL got off to a rocky start when a cross-eyed and painful-to-watch Ritchie Sambora lost his next-to-only line during host Jon Bon Jovi’s monologue (Sambora smiling blankly, mouthing “Oh shit, I lost it.” To his credit, intended or not, his bumbling facial expression was sorta funny.) Didn’t look like JBJ was pleased, mouthing… More »

Björk @ Madison Square Garden, NYC 9/24/07

Well we saw Björk’s first US show in support of Volta (at CoachellaSNL doesn’t count), so it was particularly symmetrical of us to head uptown to MSG Monday night to check the last American date of ’07. For the comparison shoppers: This week’s gig featured less headdresses and big screens, and… More »

Update For Cutie, Radiohead, Björk

Slow Fridays are good for one thing: studio progress updates! Although, today has been kind of special as far as non-news studio news goes. So, here’s the trifecta…

First up: Radiohead! LP7’s like old faithful for reportage on the studio status front, but this one’s more juicy than some of our past drool sessions. More »

New Björk Video – “Innocence”

There’s a winner! Yes indeed, Björk’s fan-made video contest has been won by the French duo Fred&Annabelle (their lack of spaces, not ours), whose visually explosive take on Volta‘s über percussive “Innocence” beat out almost 500 other entries to be crowned Bjork’s official “Innocence” vid. Why them? According to Bjork.com, “It caught Björk for being… More »

Coachella: Björk Lays Early Claim To Set Of Fest

Not that Coachella’s a competition … but of course it is. Who’s gonna turn in the show to set tongues wagging (à la Daft Punk)? It’s only been a day, we know, and there’s so much left to see. But it’s tough to think anything could top last night’s sensational set under the… More »

Your Photoshopped Voltas

Thanks to all who took our Volta Photoshop This! challenge. As always, the graphic designers among you impressed us. Of course we received hundreds of thousands of entries, but sorted out the cream of the crop for your voting consideration. Yes, some people submitted multiple entries, which increases their chances of winning. We never specified… More »

New Björk Video – “Earth Intruders”

Björk handed the reins over to French director Michel Ocelot for the first official Volta vid, sorta like a mashup of the “Human Behaviour” forest during A Nightmare Before Christmas. Unlike Gondry’s take, Ocelot keeps it linear, horizontal, two-dimensional … but still hella trippy.

Remember to watch SNL this weekend to… More »

New Björk – “Innocence”

This fan-made vid contest is all the rage these days, eh? Well, the best part about Björk’s contest to let you create the video for “Innocence” is that, this time, everybody wins — ’cause she had to let you hear the song before Volta released! Congratulations. Head to MySpace to take a listen of the… More »

Make Your Very Own Volta Cover

The viral Volta onslaught wasn’t enough to appease Björk fans’ appetites and impatience for the record’s release, so the photoshop savvy among ‘em have taken matters into their own laptops. Stereogum reader Kevin sent over a bundle of spoofs on Björk’s album art. In this one, her suit is black not. More »

Born Ruffians Cover Grizzly Bear (Studio Version), Ed Droste Reveals His Ideal

Last year we posted about Warp Records’ Born Ruffians in-studio performance at KEXP, covering Grizzly Bear’s “Knife,” giving the standard-in-the-making a pepped-up, jangly-guit R&B shuffle. The track got the Ruffians’ some well-deserved blog love, and now they’ve memorialized their take with a studio version that’s worth your bandwith.

Björk Talks Volta, Adorably

Footage and interview from the Volta studio sessions and photo shoot. She had us at “Hello”! Someone should dress like this for the Of Montreal show this weekend.

Most revealing for Björk heads is her comment towards the end, saying that, for Volta, she wanted “plucked strings instruments” that sounded “like… More »
