Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor, the man masquerading as CANT, has made a video for “Too Late, Too Far,” one of the pheromone-soaked polyrhythmic slinkers from his debut solo LP Dreams Come True. The Richard Peete-directed clip opens with some “Vomit“-esque automotive chic, and then some mystic woods, cinematic smoke, VHS weirdness and fabric monsters take over, making it like David Lynch directing a We Are The World video siphoned through an analog filter. Last year, right around the time summer turned to fall, we at Stereogum published our list of the 40 best new bands of the year. The idea of a “new” band is a pretty nebulous one, since many of the kids we listed were probably planning out their musical ventures in their basements since they were 11, but these were all artists who started to make a dent in our collective consciousness last year. This year, we’ve got another crop of 40 new artists who deserve your attention. So here we go again.

A few clarifications are probably in order. This may be a Best New Bands list, but plenty of the people on it aren’t new, and plenty of the artists listed aren’t bands. A few of the groups on our list (Wild Flag, CANT) may include people you already know, but they’ve all got new artistic ventures going. Others may have released music before last year’s list ran, but they’ve really come into their own in the past 12 months. And a pretty huge chunk of our list is dedicated to solo artists: Rappers, producers, people who might not make their music with guitars or bass or drums but who are nevertheless doing exciting things.

Also, the word “best” is, as ever, entirely up for debate. We’ve discussed and argued and engaged in brutal hand-to-hand combat over our selections, and they represent our own totally subjective favorites. You’re welcome to tell us your own; that’s what the comments section is for.

We’re not ranking these artists; they’re all listed alphabetically below. And to help you get familiar, we’ve included free MP3s and all relevant information on each and every one of these artists. Let’s get started, shall we?

Grizzly Bear bassist/producer/vocalist/resident blond Chris Taylor releases his full-length debut LP this fall under the CANT moniker. The record comes on the back of his debut 7″ “Ghosts“; both come bearing the stamp of Terrible Records, the Brooklyn-based label he co-founded (and often produces) responsible for material by Class Actress, Blood Orange, and Twin Shadow. (Taylor’s working with Twin Shadow’s George Lewis, Jr. again on his solo LP Dreams Come True.) You’ve heard “Answers,” today’s CANT track is called “Believe.” The bass (sensibly) takes a featured role on the cut, working nicely with the pretty, disorientingly woozy keyboards panning sides, the effects-wet (possibly octavized) guitars, the subdued, sub-mixed vocals, etc.

In its original instance, the debut single “Ghosts” from CANT aka Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor is a spacious, spectral statement of intent from the bassist-turned-producer-turned-label-chief, simultaneously submerged underwater in its low-end, airy and, yep, ghostly in its top-line filigree. Here “Ghosts” gets a pulsing, club-sick synth-struck makeover in the native vein of Class Actress, who I called “the cream of the Terrible Records crop” after a particularly righteous recent show at Glasslands. But that’s a designation which ought to be qualified to account for the label’s co-founder and mainbrain, so consider this a highly downloadable document of Terrible’s top two.

We were recently introduced to Chris Taylor’s new label with Ethan Silverman, Terrible Records, via its first release Acrylics earlier this month. CT takes a production credit on that band’s debut EP, as he has for Dirty Projectors (Rise Above), Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson (self-titled), and Grizzly Bear’s Yellow House and Veckatmest. No surprise then that Taylor handles all facets of the release, recording, and production for the solo track “Ghosts,” his first issue under the name Cant. It’s a great cut, and great fun for fans of Grizzly Bear curious to hear how their sound comes together. With Rossen’s (not quite solo project but still) Department Of Eagles, we got to hear a relatively unchecked expression of his unique compositional sense. There’s an interestingly crafted song here, too, but with Cant the emphasis is on sound and aural vibe first, which is what you’d expect from the hands that shaped Grizzly’s studio efforts: “Ghosts” packs (yes) ghostly harmonies, the odd tambourine hit, that distinctive bass tone and spacious yet filigreed arrangement. You know the voice from myriad GB backing vocals; it’s nice to hear it out front for a change. The track does mix an spectral airiness with an underwatery wobble, which makes sense with all the allusions to swimming — and drowning.
