Clinic promised a move away from their well-established sound on upcoming album Bubblegum. “I’m Aware” is still pretty surprising though: Soft-edged vocals from singer Ade Blackburn, sighing strings, and exactly 100% less tension. They’ve still got the masks. But from this first single, it sounds like a whole new band.

Clinic switch it up in the W.I.Z.-directed video for “Tomorrow.” It’s shadowy like the other Do It! clips, but this time they leave the Hawaiian shirts and lava lamps at home. The star’s a girl of a hard-to-pin-down age, not the face-masked band of a hard-to-pin-down age. Lit like a Rembrandt, she’s enacts a ritual — bowl, dirt, matches, incense — before dressing to the nines. Which includes bells on her shoes, ribbons everywhere else. Then she dances.

Maybe it’s those masks, but whether Clinic are hanging out in a VU lava lamp or rocking amid Stan Brakhage splices, the internal wranglers manage to conjure that same detached feel. Put your hand over your mouth and nose. See how cool you look? Yeah, it’s the masks. That said, even when the lads perform Do It!‘s “Corpus Christi” on BBC, with some off-stage clappers, you get the sense they’re in their own hygienic universe.

This new video for “The Witch” has a very similar lava lamp look and set of Hawaiian shirts as the video for “Free Not Free,” the first single from Clinic’s forthcoming Do It!. This time out, though, everyone’s standing up (besides the drummer, duh), and there are some Stan Brakhage-style splices and sped-up urban wrangler shots. Arty. Also, it’s a good song.

Those hanging bottles remind us of Foals’ hanging meat. That came out wrong.

Playing in a room with some VU aquarium ambiance, surgical masks in place, Clinic ooze through “Free Not Free,” the first single from their fifth album Do It!. That exclamation point seems a tad ironic in light of this mellowly pastoral, lava-lit undertaking. They called their upcoming Do It! live show “a warped technicolor explosion,” though this seems less explosions, more chill-out tent. Unless they’re talking about those Hawaiian shirts.

The night after a universally hailed set at Sasquatch! (duh), Arcade Fire continued their sold-out tour with a stop at Portland’s Schnitzer Concert Hall, ebbing out of “Neon Bible” and into a drumpad-free take on Internal Wrangler‘s “Distortions.” Win doesn’t have all the lyrics down, but he does offer a cool Ade. We love the clench-jawed, masked men of Clinic. And though the the parlor tricks and line dance routine (btw, wtf?) don’t make the stinging, “medieval acid punk” of this Visitations track any less creepy — they do make it make it all the more addictive. Besides, big pears are like totally delicious.
