Colin Meloy Teases New Decemberists Album What A Terrible World, What A Beautiful World With CMJ Busking

It’s been nearly four years since the Decemberists released The King Is Dead, their last album. The band debuted a couple of new songs at the Boston Calling festival over the summer, and now frontman Colin Meloy is building anticipation for the next record in the most ground-level way imaginable: Street busking. He’s in New… More »

Bob Mould – “I Don’t Know You Anymore” Video (Feat. Colin Meloy)

Bob Mould is a punk rock legend still bashing out remarkably vigorous and effective anthems. (My co-worker Michael says he’s making the best music of his career right now, which is lunacy, but the mere fact that someone could think that right now is amazing.) But legend status and good songs don’t necessarily guarantee a… More »

How Independent Rockers Celebrated #IndependenceDay

How did you celebrate July 4th? On a rooftop BBQ listening to our summer mix? Maybe you stayed in and watched old episodes of Hoarders on Roku? Maybe I stayed in and did that. There is no way to know. But all across this great country we do know there were fireworks to be see… More »

Indie Rockers Respond To NY Legalizing Gay Marriage

New York just became the 6th largest state to approve same-sex marriage. Yes! The Senate bill passed 33-to-29, Governor Cuomo signed the measure shortly after, and the law goes into effect in 30 days. A historic night to be sure, one probably best not spent in front of a laptop. Too late. But in case… More »

Portlandia’s already been good for unexpected cameos (Aimee Mann, Steve Buscemi, Aubrey Plaza, plus many others). And it looks lik Portlandia is upping the number of musical cameos. Colin Meloy Plays New Decemberists Tunes, Inks Book Deal

Colin Meloy tested out a couple of in-progress Decemberists songs at a PDX Pop Now! Benefit last night. The first is under the working title “January Hymn,” the other called “July Hymn.” The latter references “the summer’s early sway,” while the first talks about clearing away snow. So the working titles do work. More »

Meat Is Murder Turns 25

When I was in high school I had a Meat Is Murder t-shirt. The one with the lyrics to the album’s title track on the front: “It’s not natural, normal or kind / The flesh you so fancifully fry / The meat in your mouth / As you savor the flavor / Of murder,” etc. More »

Becky Stark Corrals Colin Meloy, Tunde Adibempe Into Joining A “Parody” Web Series

We’re told Califunya, the pressingly precious new web-series created by Lavender Diamond’s Becky Stark, “parodies a high school play that is parodying a kids’ show from the ’60s as performed by grown-ups.” But even if you didn’t know about the many levels of parody being plied to the musical proceedings in Califunya, it’d still fit… More »

MTV Lets Us Know Portland Has Bands, Basements, Rain, Trees

Echoing Slate’s out-of-date Portland exposé from this past fall, MTV’s followed the momentum of their Brooklyn 2008 piece with a feature on PDX. What we learn: There are a lot of bands who live there, it’s still relatively cheap, it rains, there are coffee shops (one of which used to employ the Thermals’ Hutch Harris). More »

Colin Meloy Started Writing A Song For The Guardian, Needs Help Completing It

Reminiscent of NPR’s “Project Song” — remember Stephen Merritt’s “The Man Of A Million Faces“? — The Guardian asked Colin Meloy to write a song while journalist Laura Barton sat at the dining room table in his Portland home and asked him a bunch of questions about his writing process. Awkward! Yeah, it’s a gimmick,… More »

Colin Meloy Sings Live!

Following in the grand Sings series wherein Colin tackled selections from the catalogs of Shirley Collins (see: Colin Meloy Sings Trad. Arr. Shirley Collins) and Morrissey (see: Colin Meloy Sings Morrissey), the Decemberists’ prog-folk poet brings good tidings of a new sound recording tackling a songwriter much closer to his heart: himself. Instead of offering… More »
