Photos From ATP Bowlie 2 Curated By Belle & Sebastian

The Belle & Sebastian-curated ATP Bowlie 2 took place earlier this week (December 10-12) at Butlins Holiday Centre, Minehead. (In 1999 B&S curated The Bowlie Weekender, which ultimately became All Tomorrow's Parties, hence the "2".) The event featured 40 bands picked by the Scottish pop ensemble and, according to photographer Elena Morelli, a bunch… More »

Crystal Castles Perform “Baptism” On Kimmel

Alice Glass brought a red lollipop and the rag-doll energy of the "Baptism" video for a performance of the track last night on Jimmy Kimmel. (Unfortunately Ethan left his Japanese sex mask at home.) Fellow Crystal Castles single "Celestica" may have won more casual listeners (especially during this cold front), but "Baptism"'s infectiou… More »

Stereogum Monthly Mix: November 2010

Back again with another monthly mix which, per its title, you should continue to expect monthly. We're glad you guys enjoyed the last installment, and thoroughly appreciate the feedback. In case you missed October's launch, the idea here is to offer a concentrated compendium of the finest recent freely available MP3s, selected from… More »

Crystal Castles & Robert Smith – “I’m Not In Love”

I surprise myself (repeatedly) by how much I like Crystal Castles's second album. (It'll be on that endless year-end list of mine, surrounded by metal, sludge, noise, various bleak, icy things.) But when they do something like get Robert Smith to sing on a song -- a Platinum Blonde cover that sounds like the… More »

Crystal Castles – “Baptism” Video

Last month I posted No Age's remix of "Baptism." This Rob Hawkins and Marc Pannozzo-directed video's for the album version of the track. Like the "Celestica" clip, it's heavy on the Alice Glass, though Ethan does show up in "a handmade Japanese sex mask."… More »

Crystal Castles – “Baptism (No Age Remix)”

This No Age remix of "Baptism" from Crystal Castles' second self-titled album sounds like the version of "Baptism" you'd find on Dean and Randy's forthcoming Everything In Between. If you've heard "Glitter," "Inflorescence," or "Life Prowler" you'll know what I mean. If not, think about a fuzzy, ambient, propulsive, dark-side-of-the-boom-box moment o… More »

Crystal Castles/Rusko @ Congress Theater, Chicago 8/13/10

The HARD summer tour stopped in Chicago last week. Photographer Tyler Trykowski was there to document the show, which began with five DJs, all there to warm the audience for Crystal Castles and Rusko. According to Tyler, much of Crystal Castles's show was bathed in blinding strobe lights, perfect for enhancing their 14-song (including three… More »

Crystal Castles – “Celestica” Video

We've heard a couple remixes of "Celestica," none as effective as the original. Especially when the original's accompanied by a somber Alice walking through a woodsy cemetery populated by kids with violins. (Ethan's busy applying angular black face paint and directing the clip with R. Hawkins.)… More »

Crystal Castles – “Celestica (Bear In Heaven Remix)”

Thurston Moore shoved guitars and grime into “Celestica." Bear In Heaven transform it into something suppler and more percussive. The new take maintains the original's angelic vibe, but it feels earthy in a way Crystal Castles would usually renegotiate. Listen at Dazed Digital. While there, read the Gordon Lish-spare interview with Alice and… More »

Crystal Castles – “Suffocation (Memory Tapes Remix)”

Last week Thurston Moore's remix for Crystal Castles made "Celestica" skuzzier. Memory Tapes' hazy remix of "Suffocation" does a lot more. Dayve Hawk emphasizes the track's translucent keyboards and breathy vocals instead of the dance floor drums, making it more of something you'd shuffle to with your shoulders down. Not sure why, but hi… More »

Crystal Castles – “Celestica (Thurston Moore Remix)”

I like the new Crystal Castles -- dark, catchy, noisy, snotty, tastefully goth. When Alice Glass screeches over white noise it can be like black metal of the WOLD or Team Prurient/Ash Pool sort ... for club kids. (Look at the cover art, titles like "Year Of Silence," "Suffocation," and "Violent Dreams," or just listen.)… More »

Crystal Castles – “Doe Deer”

Toronto duo Crystal Castles are following up their self-titled debut with a self-titled sophomore album. Just like elder NYC synth duo Suicide. The first song to surface is the brief, blasted "Doe Deer," which also shows up on a Record Store Day 12". According to a press release, Alice Glass and Ethan Kath recorded the… More »

ATP NY 2009: Wayne’s World

Our second year at Kutsher's was rainier than the first, but that didn't matter so much to us or, seemingly, the other attendees: If anything, this year felt more celebratory (and debauched) than 2008. You wouldn't be faulted for noting a certain hippie vibe. Visually, there were the tie-dyed shirts and hoodies (purchased at… More »

Lollapalooza 2009 Wrap-Up

If you weren't talking about the weather in Grant Park this weekend, you weren't in Grant Park this weekend. And really that would've been a shame. It was oppressive at times, but despite -- or as these things go, perhaps because of -- the inclement weather conditions (APW-styled rain Friday, sweltering heat and humidity the… More »

All Points West Wet 2009 In Photos

When APW presented its inaugural festival last year, we weren't alone in taking issue with the experience: lack of food options, a fair but generally recycled undercard which played more like "a bunch of bands opening for Radiohead," an extremely restricted/overpriced drink situation designed to keep people sober and make them feel uncomfortable by… More »

Alice Glass Fights With Sonar Security

It's another Crystal Castles freakout! And again, it stems from sound issues. Alice thought their Sonar set sounded shitty, so she started manhandling a drumset. Here's video of a security guard manhandling her in turn. More »

Coachella 2009: Moz, Macca, Cohen Lead Friday’s Nostalgia Parade

By Amrit Singh & Brandon Stosuy Our trek into Indio went so smoothly this year that we've both become paranoid about something going incredibly wrong at any moment, but so far we've made it through without broken bones or spirits. In fact, even though the day started with extreme lines and heat, once we passed… More »

Controversy Surrounds Cancelled Crystal Castles Dallas Gig

There's a lot of he said/she said surrounding Crystal Castle's canceled show at the Granada in Dallas last night. Why did CC kick VEGA off the bill? Was it the venue or CC who claimed the sound system wasn't strong enough to handle those 8-bit sounds? What will Carles think? GvsB tries sorting it… More »

Stereogum & team9 Present… MySplice III: 2008 Mashed Up

For the third year in a row, we've turned to master bootlegger team9 to take some of our favorite songs of the year and mash them together. On Stereogum & team9 Present... MySplice III you'll hear familiar blog hits from artists like Lykke Li, of Montreal, the Breeders, Bloc Party, Crystal Castles, and Beck… More »

Crystal Castles Get Technological For Toshiba

Alice Glass topping the NME Cool List isn't so surprising when you consider how she and (to a lesser degree) Ethan Kath have tapped the hep zeitgeist. From the controversy over their merch and accusations of plagiarism down to Glass's perfectly angled hair and perfectly black eye makeup, it's as if… More »
