Featured Crystal Castles stories

It’s hard to remember a time when Lollapalooza, the festival, was not part of American pop culture, and since the last time it landed stateside, it’s expanded to include stops in Santiago, Chile and Sao Paolo, Brazil. Perry Farrell’s ’90s tour-baby turned Grant Park-engulfing massive brodown is a global institution, and though at this point… More »

Crystal Castles’ great historical distinction, as I see it, is this: They’re the only group, as far as I can tell, that’s ascended to dance-music festival-headliner status by relying on distance, obfuscation, and mystery. (You could make a case for Aphex Twin and his peers there, but they were operating in a different time, a… More »

Fall has fallen, as they say. As a result this month’s mix of ten tracks delivered right on time for September’s grand finale has all the classic ingredients of a prosperous autumn: rap, punk, post-punk, R&B, and a Paul Westerberg song. They appear here generally in that order, diligently sequenced to include Weekend Money +… More »

Stereogum Monthly Mix: August 2012

Summer is ending! And you have some work to do. Did you experience that season-defining moment? That rooftop conversation, that carefree weekend of intense interpersonal bonding? Did you find the person who’ll keep you warm all winter? If you’ve answered negatively to even one of these, you have some work to do. And so we… More »

Crystal Castles Announce Album, Tour

Yesterday, Crystal Castles let loose their “Plague,” and today the band revealed to NME that, indeed, a new, as-of-yet-untitled album is on the way (I think we can make a pretty good guess at the title, though). The group also announced tour dates with HEALTH and Kontravoid, so be sure to scope those down below. More »

Crystal Castles – “Plague”

Crystal Castles don’t like us to know what they’re doing. They play live in disorienting strobe-lit darkness, and they release MP3s on the internet without giving us any idea what they’re planning on doing with these songs. So here, without context, is “Plague,” their latest bit of bloodthirsty gothed-out dance music. It will doubtless sound… More »

Watch Crystal Castles Debut New Tune At Parklife Fest

Last weekend, Crystal Castles brought their blood-garglingly awesome live show to Manchester’s Parklife Festival, debuting an as-yet-untitled new track that sounds like it belongs at a zombie cathedral rave in the process. If you’ve ever been to a Crystal Castles show, you’ll already know that a fan-made video is not going to show you a… More »

Crystal Castles – “Suffocation” Video, HEALTH Remix

Alice Glass vogues hard in the new clip for “Suffocation,” in which the Crystal Castles frontwoman holds down an abandoned NYC mansion. The video is directed by bandmate Ethan Kath. Check it out at Vs. Magazine and download a new remix of the track by HEALTH down below. More »

Reading & Leeds Lineup 2011

If you’re a Muse or My Chemical Romance fan, I feel sorta bad for you, but today’s your lucky day: The bands are headlining this summer’s Reading & Leeds Festivals. The (not so) resurgent Strokes and Pulp are playing co-headline slots. The bills also include the National, Odd Future, UK sensations the Vaccines, Crystal Castles,… More »

Photos From ATP Bowlie 2 Curated By Belle & Sebastian

The Belle & Sebastian-curated ATP Bowlie 2 took place earlier this week (December 10-12) at Butlins Holiday Centre, Minehead. (In 1999 B&S curated The Bowlie Weekender, which ultimately became All Tomorrow’s Parties, hence the “2”.) The event featured 40 bands picked by the Scottish pop ensemble and, according to photographer Elena Morelli, a bunch of… More »

Crystal Castles Perform “Baptism” On Kimmel

Alice Glass brought a red lollipop and the rag-doll energy of the “Baptism” video for a performance of the track last night on Jimmy Kimmel. (Unfortunately Ethan left his Japanese sex mask at home.) Fellow Crystal Castles single “Celestica” may have won more casual listeners (especially during this cold front), but “Baptism”‘s infectious implosion (complete… More »

Stereogum Monthly Mix: November 2010

Back again with another monthly mix which, per its title, you should continue to expect monthly. We’re glad you guys enjoyed the last installment, and thoroughly appreciate the feedback. In case you missed October’s launch, the idea here is to offer a concentrated compendium of the finest recent freely available MP3s, selected from (though not… More »

Crystal Castles & Robert Smith – “I’m Not In Love”

I surprise myself (repeatedly) by how much I like Crystal Castles’s second album. (It’ll be on that endless year-end list of mine, surrounded by metal, sludge, noise, various bleak, icy things.) But when they do something like get Robert Smith to sing on a song — a Platinum Blonde cover that sounds like the best… More »

Crystal Castles – “Baptism” Video

Last month I posted No Age’s remix of “Baptism.” This Rob Hawkins and Marc Pannozzo-directed video’s for the album version of the track. Like the “Celestica” clip, it’s heavy on the Alice Glass, though Ethan does show up in “a handmade Japanese sex mask.”… More »

Crystal Castles – “Baptism (No Age Remix)”

This No Age remix of “Baptism” from Crystal Castles’ second self-titled album sounds like the version of “Baptism” you’d find on Dean and Randy’s forthcoming Everything In Between. If you’ve heard “Glitter,” “Inflorescence,” or “Life Prowler” you’ll know what I mean. If not, think about a fuzzy, ambient, propulsive, dark-side-of-the-boom-box moment on some past No… More »

Crystal Castles/Rusko @ Congress Theater, Chicago 8/13/10

The HARD summer tour stopped in Chicago last week. Photographer Tyler Trykowski was there to document the show, which began with five DJs, all there to warm the audience for Crystal Castles and Rusko. According to Tyler, much of Crystal Castles’s show was bathed in blinding strobe lights, perfect for enhancing their 14-song (including three… More »

Crystal Castles – “Celestica” Video

We’ve heard a couple remixes of “Celestica,” none as effective as the original. Especially when the original’s accompanied by a somber Alice walking through a woodsy cemetery populated by kids with violins. (Ethan’s busy applying angular black face paint and directing the clip with R. Hawkins.)… More »

Crystal Castles – “Celestica (Bear In Heaven Remix)”

Thurston Moore shoved guitars and grime into “Celestica.” Bear In Heaven transform it into something suppler and more percussive. The new take maintains the original’s angelic vibe, but it feels earthy in a way Crystal Castles would usually renegotiate. Listen at Dazed Digital. While there, read the Gordon Lish-spare interview with Alice and Ethan. (Dazed… More »

Crystal Castles – “Suffocation (Memory Tapes Remix)”

Last week Thurston Moore’s remix for Crystal Castles made “Celestica” skuzzier. Memory Tapes’ hazy remix of “Suffocation” does a lot more. Dayve Hawk emphasizes the track’s translucent keyboards and breathy vocals instead of the dance floor drums, making it more of something you’d shuffle to with your shoulders down. Not sure why, but his versio… More »

Crystal Castles – “Celestica (Thurston Moore Remix)”

I like the new Crystal Castles — dark, catchy, noisy, snotty, tastefully goth. When Alice Glass screeches over white noise it can be like black metal of the WOLD or Team Prurient/Ash Pool sort … for club kids. (Look at the cover art, titles like “Year Of Silence,” “Suffocation,” and “Violent Dreams,” or just listen.)… More »

Crystal Castles – “Doe Deer”

Toronto duo Crystal Castles are following up their self-titled debut with a self-titled sophomore album. Just like elder NYC synth duo Suicide. The first song to surface is the brief, blasted “Doe Deer,” which also shows up on a Record Store Day 12″. According to a press release, Alice Glass and Ethan Kath recorded the… More »

ATP NY 2009: Wayne’s World

Our second year at Kutsher’s was rainier than the first, but that didn’t matter so much to us or, seemingly, the other attendees: If anything, this year felt more celebratory (and debauched) than 2008. You wouldn’t be faulted for noting a certain hippie vibe. Visually, there were the tie-dyed shirts and hoodies (purchased at the… More »

Lollapalooza 2009 Wrap-Up

If you weren’t talking about the weather in Grant Park this weekend, you weren’t in Grant Park this weekend. And really that would’ve been a shame. It was oppressive at times, but despite — or as these things go, perhaps because of — the inclement weather conditions (APW-styled rain Friday, sweltering heat and humidity the… More »
