Wolf Parade – EXPO 86 Premature Evaluation

Members of Wolf Parade have done a bit of explaining about the band’s third album EXPO 86. We were told the main criteria Spencer Krug had for the songs was “whether or not [he] would dance to them.” He continued: “You know in Archie comics when there’s a school dance and you see little cartoon music notes floating out of the PA speakers? I like to think this new record sounds like those notes.” For his part, Dan Boeckner said EXPO 86 is a “dense” and noisy album that he feels is “more focused” and has “more energy” than At Mount Zoomer. We’ve been listening to this hour of new music all weekend and agree with both songwriters.

Adam Franklin Of Swervedriver Covers Wolf Parade

When we saw Swervedriver at Coachella they played a very solid set in a tent that was barely 1/3 full. Lame. One way for Adam Franklin & Co. to gain new fans amongst a younger crowd is to cover a song by a band like the beloved Wolf Parade. Bingo: On a forthcoming 7,” Franklin takes on Boeckner-fronted Apologies To The Queen Mary rocker “Shine A Light” and Dan’s Handsome Furs are set to do a still-unannounced track by Swervedriver. It’ll be available digitally and as a limited edition “Shine A Light” 7″ on colored vinyl via White Whale. We’re told to expect the finished platter in “early summer,” though Franklin’s chilled, atmospheric, and haunted (but somehow tonally sunny) take’s already available via iTunes. Or, you can stream it at MySpace. Pick a good song, Dan and Alexi. The popular “Duel” would be appropriate.

Wolf Parade Unveil At Mount Zoomer Album Art

Call it a ritual, call it whatever you will: when an album we’re frothy for first yields cover art, we like to call in the graphic designers. But first to clarify the album title: Meet At Mount Zoomer (yes At Mount Zoomer — Kissing The Beehive will just have to settle for being a track title), so named because it was recorded at Mount Zoomer, the studio owned and operated by drummer Arlen Thompson. (It’s also a reference to the B.C. nickname for magic mushrooms and “a nod to Thee Silver Mt. Zion” and maybe even more things Wiki hasn’t sussed out yet.)

OK so about that album art … feeling devilish?
