She & Him Do “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” on Ellen

The She & Him network TV circuit continues with a performance of “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” on Ellen. Thought it’s a totally tepid rendition that’s almost impossible to comment on because it’s so neutral, I appreciate how devoid of subliminal messaging it is (This morning, I woke up in my bed after a long blackout surrounded by boxes of Nintendo DSs). Ellen Interviews Black Keys Video Dancer

The Black Keys haven’t made a proper video for their fired-up new jam “Lonely Boy” yet, but they did debut the song with a viral video in which some guy absolutely goes to town, dancing and lip-syncing to the track. Ellen DeGeneres is obviously a connoisseur of televised dancing, so she recently interviewed that dancer on her show. As it turns out, he’s a struggling actor named Derrick Tuggle, and he looked pretty adorably nervous-as-hell during the show’s interview segment; you don’t often see restless leg syndrome on network TV. Tuggle, however, came alive when Ellen asked him to dance. The man can move. Watch video of him on Ellen, as well as the original Black Keys clip, below.

Coldplay Cover Rihanna’s “We Found Love”

In their infinite wisdom, the still-ridiculously-popular Coldplay recorded a version of “We Found Love,” the monster new dancepop single from their “Princess Of China” collaborator Rihanna, for the BBC. With their downbeat, piano-led version, Coldplay have effectively transformed “We Found Love” into a Coldplay song, though they’ve managed to do it without squashing the chorus’s catchiness. Listen to it below.

In related news, Coldplay sold about 450,000 American copies of their new Mylo Xyloto last week. That is a lot of copies! Also, CNET reports that Coldplay have refused to offer any songs from the album to streaming services like Spotify, Rhapsody, and Rdio. And also, Coldplay were guests on Ellen this morning. Strokes Play Ellen

The Strokes played Ellen for today’s broadcast. The episode will be on TV this afternoon — 4 p.m. in most areas — but Ellen put the band’s performance of Angles‘ “Gratisfaction” on the show’s website early. There’s no intro and no Ellen dancing, though the description says The Strokes is one of her favorites. Watch:

In case you missed it, Kanye unveiled his new gold and diamond teeth on Ellen. When asked if he places a gold and diamond bridge on top of his normal teeth he told her, “No, it’s, like, replaced my bottom row of teeth.” Of course. This led EW to ask the big one: “Did Kanye West really have his teeth pulled out and replaced with diamonds?” They queried a dentist, Dr. Emanuel Layliev of the New York Center for Cosmetic Dentistry, to find out. Since you watch Ellen every morning you already know that Vampire Weekend visited the show today and played “Holiday,” and the did “Cousins” for the studio audience. It was their first Daytime TV appearance. Unfortunately the online clips don’t show Ellen DeGeneres talking to, or dancing with, the band. I’m guessing it happened though. Watch:

I remember a bunch of years ago while I was still on my world (educational) tour, before I moved back to New York, I’d be nonstop asking my artisty friends for stories of their NYC encounters with the people on my iPod. (Yes I was one of those.) There was this friend, who had a friend of a friend etc., that took voice lessons with Tip. I liked the sound of that, imagining that signature rasp turning toward melody. This was during the big release-less gap from ’99 to now (Kamaal The Abstract notwithstanding), so I figured we’d see a lot more singing from the man in the future. And we have. Alongside guest spots from people like D’Angelo, The Renaissance is riddled with Kamaal being his very own D’Angelo (I’m thinking “Official” specifically, but he plies the syncopated, stacked background harmonies throughout). It’s probably wise that he farmed out the best singing-hooks to tested golden throats, like Raphael Saadiq on the man-woman boogie of “We Fight/We Love,” but as they say in show business, you can’t always bring Raphael Saadiq with you when you do the Ellen show. Previously acknowledged friend of hip hop Degeneres had Kamaal do the tune yesterday, and yes he sung it, and it sounds, well, it’ll do when Raph’s not around.

Kanye Performs “Love Lockdown” For His Good Friend Ellen DeGeneres

Kanye and Ellen DeGeneres are like really tight? Sure why not. Instead of MTV or BET or even his own blog, the “Love Lockdown” premiere went to Ellen TV earlier this week, where she let us know he was her “good friend” and that the video was “brilliant.” Later we found out the video was also inspired by American Psycho (the monochromatic apartment part, not the glow-in-the-dark dancing tribespeople part.) So then a day later Ellen, staggering the Kanye content for optimum ratings benefit (that’s how friendships work, you stagger content and calculate ratings benefits all the time), showed this clip of Kanye in her studio a doing a live take on his dejected-and-autotuned jam. West brings a crisp suit and the Daft Punk drumline and some pathos, Ellen repays him with a big Ellen hug.
