When we brought you the “Harold T. Wilkins” video late last year, someone in the comments mentioned that they had previously released a low budget video for the song. Something sorta similar is going on with the video for “Fire Escape.” The band and director Jamie Thraves didn’t want to commit to either a bleak or a hopeful ending to the “Fire Escape” video, so they went with both. Thraves does know how to end a video though — he directed Radiohead’s “Just.” It’s also somewhat related to the science fiction theme they had in the “Wilkins” video, though with a Heaven’s Gate spin.

After Thom Yorke, Bon Iver & St. Vincent, and Grizzly Bear & Beach House made soundtracks to multi-million dollar hormonal-teenage-vampires-in-love franchises a safe place for indie artists to premiere their wares, you had to figure more folks from Stereogum’s tag cloud would lineup at the chance to lure Bella & Edward heads from the land of the wasted youth. Every half-hour for the next bunch of hours (because WEB STRATEGY), the folks behind The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the third installment in the Twilight trilogy, will be revealing (on MySpace, whatever that is) another track title from the film’s OST. So far, so indie, and also so vampire-punny: Beck and Bat For Lashes (+1 point for Alex Patsavas there) offer the collab track “Let’s Get Lost,” and Vampire Weekend (nice) contribute the original “Jonathan Low.” Also on board: Metric with a title track of sorts in “Eclipse (All Yours),” the Black Keys (“Heavy In Your Arms”), the Dead Weather, Fanfarlo, and Florence + The Machine. A quick listen of London-via-Sweden sextet Fanfarlo suggests they’re building from the finer stock of 2006′s crop, with surging melodramatics and instrumentation in the Arcade Fire and Beirut vein, lead vocals that are something like David Byrne via Alec Ounsworth, and as was a sign o’ those times, a David Bowie endorsement. Underneath those trappings, though, are windswept indie pop songs that have their own heart, as seen on this year’s debut LP Reservoir, an 11-song set that’s been a blogger’s delight since February and is now seeing major re-release via Atlantic. With the label upgrade comes a proper video budget, so the band mined their influences some more by enlisting past Beirut-video director Alma Har’el (of the unforgettable “Elephant Gun” clip) and traveling up to Mirror Lake near Lake Placid, NY to flesh out their ode to sc-fi writer Harold T. Wilkins. The group’s busy “telegraphing thoughts to each other and controlling each other’s movements” by dancing in the fog, which is indeed a little bit science-fiction, and a little bit third-base coach signaling for a bunt.

Despite the pre-CMJ buzz that this year was gonna be a buzzkill — or maybe because of it — so far the fest has turned out a surprising number of notable new artists, sets, and showcases. You can’t see all of them, but that doesn’t mean you can’t try. So while Scott, Brandon, and I were making sure Free Energy had all the Miller High Life they could drink and Cold Cave were stocked with a backup wardrobe of black clothing at our party, our CMJ photo correspondents Kyle Dean Reinford and Jessica Amaya were running around the city framing the rest of the fest in jpegs. Before coming to the Studio @ Webster Hall, Kyle was on Ludlow St. for the Pop Tarts Suck Toasted day party at Cake Shop (Small Black, Little Girls, Motel Motel, Sisters), the The Music Slut/Sneak Attack party at Pianos (Fanfarlo and Javelin), and PASTE‘s shindig at the Living Room for the Rocketboys, while Jessica spent the night at Music Hall Of Williamsburg for Brooklyn Vegan‘s sturdy lineup of the Antlers, Think About Life, Laura Marling, Fanfarlo, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Wheel, and comedian Dave Hill’s Walter Shcreifels Band.
