Congratulations, sirs. It’s also our first taste of the New York trio’s forthcoming 13-track Another Day Has Passed, their first full-length for new label home The End. Even with the new titling approach, they haven’t shifted the unpretentious hard rock, a catchy, heavy, angular and knotty sound more than suitable for fans of Torche, Foo Fighters, Big Business, Unwound, etc. Or, well, fans of Goes Cube.
The trio’s newest, “Song 57″ (Heinz joke in there somewhere), is almost a bit Foo when it opens, but then they get mathy, louder, and rip that lid right the fuck off. We’ve never heard them get this massive. Here are vocalist/guitarist Dave Obuchowski’s thoughts on the new song and material:

There isn’t much more we can say about for the Forms at this point, so we’ll recapitulate as succinctly as possible: You should be listening to this band. And, shit, if their Midway show was a sign of their road readiness (national tour starting this week), then you should be seeing this band — and hearing from them, too. The quartet’s been tuning up the past few months via shows opening for the National, secret gigs, etc., but of the four we’ve caught, the Midway set Saturday night just was on another level. Still no “Ignoreland” cover in that set, but the time-shifted/coil-riffed “All Apologies” is a crowd fave for neophytes and Forms sophisticates alike. Karaoke beckoned so we didn’t have long to stay for another of our favorite locals, Goes Cube, but the trio still managed to permanently damage our hearing more in those ten minutes than most other acts combined. Worth it? Of course. (Ears are still chiming, though.) Jump for MP3s and a few more pics.
We love the beginning, too, uncoiling with Unwound’s sense of feedback as a flotation device.

Goes Cube – “Song 46″ (MP3)

The bludgeoner’s one of four songs recorded by Foreign Islands’ Dean Baltulonis at his Wild Arctic studio in Long Island City, shortly after the boys returned home from tour. Where the tunes’ll eventually end up isn’t so clear: Guitarist/Vocalist David Obuchowski tells us they plan to do a single with an unnamed UK label, and mentioned they have enough material for a full-length follow-up to Beckon The Dagger God ? now someone needs to be smart and sign ‘em!

If you want to hear more Goes Cube, own a pair of earplugs, and are in NYC this weekend, you can catch them live Friday at the Bowery Ballroom with Stereo Total and the Octopus Project, and on Saturday for our NYC blog bretheren’s After The Jump Festival, a day-long charity event organized by a couple dozen bloggers, featuring Locksley, Ra Ra Riot, Spectrum, etc., at Studio B in Brooklyn. If you want to thank the organizers, they’ll be the ones taking lots of pictures. It’s like our lifeblood.

Fittingly shady.

Here are a few choice selections from the list of what rocked Oh My Rockness this year. They’re representing with a group of Stereo-faves and perfectly articulate those tough-to-pinpoint things that make us love these bands so.

Best Rock Band Full of a Bunch of Married People – The Big Sleep

It was a very tough call, but this hard-hitting trio narrowly edges The Captain & Tenille for this prestigious honor. Love doesn’t hurt, it slays!

Best Use of Distortion Pedal – - Goes Cube

Sometimes we wish we had a distortion pedal for life. Like when our landlord yells at us for not rinsing our beer bottles thoroughly enough. Instead of getting mad at the guy, we could just do a Goes Cube stomp on the floor and our apartment would suddenly be flooded with fuzzy angst. That would show him, alright.

Best Band Born After Corey Haim’s Career Went Kaput – - Tokyo Police Club

These Canadian youngsters are barely old enough to drive, let alone been born in time to see the release of “Licensed to Drive.” Unfortunately this means that their sound isn’t influenced one bit by the brilliance of Billy Ocean’s soundtrack. “Get out of my dreams, get into my car.” See, that’s what we’re talking about when we talk about nostalgia. It doesn’t get any better than that.

Best Band That Everyone Forgets This Time Of Year Because Their Album Came Out In Like January – - Band of Horses

Think of them as the musical equivalent of Vin Diesel’s wonderfully overlooked gem, “The Pacifier.” If that movie came out in November or December, instead of February of last year, you just know it would have swept the major awards at the 2006 Oscars. But no, out of sight out of mind. Band of Horses is like that, only their music isn’t about a highly-trained officer who meets his toughest challenge yet when he has to baby-sit.

Best Band To Use “S” Alliteration With When Describing — Serena Maneesh

Serena Maneesh sing swirling shoegaze songs with stunning psychic sonic swells. Sy Sloody Salentine’s Shields surely shall love this!

The Big Sleep are married?! Well that’s cute — and seeing as they’re two dudes and one lady, so very anti-Mormon of them. Read the full list here.
