Coachella 2013 Weekend 2: Friday’s 5 Best Things

Peel back the surface and look past the picturesque valley backdrop. Forget about the gorgeous, sun-kissed young folk wearing next to nothing (or, on occasion, nothing). Go ahead and ignore the ridiculous hippie art splattering the landscape. Once you get past everything that suggests Coachella is a legit wonderful place, reality sets in. You’re i… More »

Coachella 2013 Friday: Blur, Modest Mouse, Grinderman, & More

“It’s the homeland!” one of the girls on the hotel shuttle yelped as we neared the festival. It really begged the question — who is the most common Coachella archetype? The only data I have to cull from is my experience from last year’s first weekend, but the situation was vastly different. Then, I went… More »

Grinderman – “Bellringer Blues (Nick Zinner Remix)” Video

Though Grinderman is no more, their catalog lives on in the form of March’s Grinderman 2 RMX remix LP. A while back, we posted a track from that affair, Nick Zinner’s remix of “Bellringer Blues,” and now that track has a black-and-white, surveillance camera-style video. Check it out below. More »

Grinderman – “Bellringer Blues (Nick Zinner Remix)”

Nick Cave’s career-revival wrecking crew Grinderman may be no more, but they’re still planning on leaving us with one final platter: Grinderman 2 RMX, which collects remixes, collaborations, and other fallout from the band’s second album. The LP features contributions from Josh Homme, Robert Fripp, the National’s Matt Berninger, and — most relevant to thi… More »

Grinderman Split Up

Nick Cave announced that Grinderman is splitting up at the Meredith Music Festival in Australia. Via The Guardian:

Cave told the 12,000 strong crowd “That’s it for Grinderman. It’s over,” before apparently adding “See you all in another ten years when we’ll be even older and uglier.”

For a bunch of… More »

Optimus Alive! 2011 In Photos

Optimus Alive! went down in Passeio Marítimo de Alges in Portugal over the weekend. Headliners included Coldplay and Jane’s Addiction. The riverside fest had a nice mix of nostalgia (Stooges, Blondie) and fresh electronic sounds (James Blake, Duck Sauce) too, but while Primal Scream got to play Screamadelica front to back, the Pretty Reckless didn’t… More »

Matt Berninger Sings Grinderman

Matt Berninger sings about being evil in the National’s “Conversation 16.” Now he digs into Grinderman’s “Evil,” a Grinderman 2 track appearing in various versions on a red glitter 12″ single (+ CD) that Nick Cave & Co. put together for Record Store Day. The EP features the original, a demo, a remix Factory Floor… More »

The 12 Most NSFW Videos Of 2010

A couple of Best Videos Of The Week ago I mentioned how nearly every good clip that week was too long, too nude, or too violent to make it on to MTV; one was even removed from YouTube, verification wall or not. But looking back on 2009’s picks, it’s easy to notice that this year’… More »

Grinderman – “Heathen Child (Andrew Weatherall Bass Mix)”

You can never have too many versions of “Heathen Child.” Right? This one was stripped and sculpted by British DJ/producer and Lone Swordsman Andrew Weatherall. (Robert Fripp becomes a ghost.) We haven’t posted the Grinderman 2 album art yet, so take a look at that while you take a listen. More »

Grinderman – “Super Heathen Child” (Feat. Robert Fripp)

When I posted Grinderman’s “Heathen Child” I mentioned that — in addition to the album version — there’s a “Super” rendition of the song featuring an extended guitar solo form King Crimson and etc.’s Robert Fripp. As suspected, Fripp’s playing offers soulful/ecstatic accompaniment to Nick Cave’s sermonizing. (Though not quite as ecstatic as the original… More »

Grinderman – “Heathen Child” Video

Grinderman’s video for “Heathen Child” is NSFW, because it contains female nudity, male nudity, blood, and Nick Cave, among other questionable things. It’s directed by John Hilcoat, who recently directed The Road. More »

Grinderman – “Heathen Child”

“Heathen Child” is the sweaty fourth single from Grinderman’s forthcoming sophomore album, Grinderman 2. In addition to this bluesy thumb-sucking album version, you’ll find a limited-edition Kanye-approved 12″ with “Super Heathen Child,” a rendition that includes a guitar solo from King Crimson ace Robert Fripp. I can only imagine how his solo compliments Nick Cave’… More »

Springsteen, Liars, Spiritualized, Grinderman, And Others Cover Suicide

Alan Vega and Martin Rev, aka dark lo-fi electro-duo Suicide, were amazing in their heyday, especially when you consider they formed in 1971, pre-dating and influencing a shit-load of post-punk, noise, no wave, synth-pop, and industrial acts that followed. (If you don’t have their self-titled 1977 or 1980 albums, pick them up or, for now,… More »

New Grinderman Video – “No Pussy Blues”

Nick Cave’s in sleazy, self-sermonizing mode on this cut from Grinderman’s March-released record, and the video’s intermixed footage of copulating kids and copulating, err, National Geographic stars fits the song’s violent dynamics to perfection. Gotta love the Grinderman, but hey kids, it’s hardly ideal make out music. More »
