Houses – “The Beauty Surrounds (Silent Rider Remix)”

Earlier this year, we posted the video for “The Beauty Surrounds,” a melancholic synthpop song from the Chicago duo Houses. Now, the Brooklyn-based producer Silent Rider has remixed the track, turning it into a spare six-minute throb but leaving its sense of ache intact. Download the remix below. More »

Houses – “Beginnings” Video

In Houses’ melancholic “The Beauty Surrounds” video, you can watch frontman Dexter Tortoriello build a tent in the desert and pine for the absent Megan Messina. Their latest video for “Beginnings” — the first track on their forthcoming album A Quiet Darkness — is a carefree prelude to the inevitable emotional disaster to follow. Messina… More »

Houses – “The Beauty Surrounds” Video

Chicago band Houses describes their interests on Facebook in four words: “Sustainable living, being alone.” Despite their isolationist tendencies, the band released a new video today for their single “The Beauty Surrounds,” off of their forthcoming third album A Quiet Darkness, due out in April. A tale of heartbreak and loneliness set in the desert,… More »

Dominant Legs – “About My Girls (Houses Remix)”

Two bands we like a lot — BTW Dominant Legs, and Houses, who were part of STEREO★GUN — get together on this remix of “About My Girls.” The song was part of Dominant Legs man Ryan William Lynch’s earliest material, then it showed up again on his EP Young At Love And Life. The harmonie… More »

Stereogum & Popgun STEREO★GUN CMJ Party, Santos Party House, NYC 10/20/10

Last night our STEREO★GUN collaboration with PopGun Booking went down on both floors of Santos Party House. Sometime from when we organized it, to the actual happening, people got especially excited about Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., who found themselves with a relatively raucous, packed room by the time they played their basement set. There were… More »

Houses – “Reds”

We mentioned boyfriend/girlfriend band Houses’ charming formation story when we premiered their video for “Endless Spring.” It’s hard not to think of their self-imposed isolation in Hawaii while listening to “Reds,” not just because of the lines about the warm winds and red skies, but because of the whispered promises to stay together here. They’re… More »

Stereogum & PopGun Present STEREO★GUN: ALL NIGHT LONG 10/20/10

Every autumn NYC’s week-long college music marathon is a great excuse for radio promoters and DSLR-toting bloggers to hobnob with famous publicists. Those who attend on official CMJ bizness even receive a canvas tote bag of promotional garbage. Also there are panels? I’m told There Will Be Panels. Joking aside, in its 30th year CMJ… More »

Houses – “Endless Spring” Video (Stereogum Premiere)

With the pale shots of sunsets and palm trees, “Endless Spring” feels like summer especially with the song’s small tempo shifts that make it feel like it’s gently retreating and pushing forward. The rather complex rhythm keeps “Endless Spring” from total languor. But remove the beats and it would become a soothing ambient track. More »
