The legendary French singer/libertine Serge Gainsbourg is a man worth honoring, and a new tribute album called From Lulu To Gainsbourg does just that. Gainsbourg’s son Lulu put together the tribute and sings about half the songs, but he also brought in an impressive array of famous people to sing his father’s songs.

Rufus Wainwright, for one, does a lovely version of “Je Suis Venu Te Dire Que Je M’en Vais” and shows some truly impressive French pronunciation along the way. We’ve got that one streaming below. And we’ve also got some other compilation tracks streaming, including contributions from Iggy Pop, Shane MacGowan, Marianne Faithfull, and, whoa, Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis.

Optimus Alive! went down in Passeio Marítimo de Alges in Portugal over the weekend. Headliners included Coldplay and Jane’s Addiction. The riverside fest had a nice mix of nostalgia (Stooges, Blondie) and fresh electronic sounds (James Blake, Duck Sauce) too, but while Primal Scream got to play Screamadelica front to back, the Pretty Reckless didn’t hit the stage at all due to “structural problems.” Good looking out, Portgual. The 2011 Isle Of Wight Festival took place on its namesake at Newport’s Seaclose Park this past weekend. Iggy Pop, Pulp, and some folks under the age of 47 played. Take a look.

Iggy’s appearance on FOX’s tailspun talent show last night is somewhat surprising; his choice of wardrobe less so (as always he prefers to just “stay like I am“). At least it might be surprising? There are pros who recap and assess American Idols‘ every move, and they do a good job at it and it is not our occupation and so it is difficult to say how often AI pulls an aging rocker out of the closet to help boost ratings and whoops that’s right Steven Tyler is a judge. (And reportedly is classing it up.) But here it is, Iggy performing “Real Wild Child (Wild One)” while a bunch of kids young enough to be his grandhchildren wait to find out if America has voted them back to the family farm or wherever. In a photo spread titled “Ballad Of A Thin Man” and subtitled “Godfathers Of Glam” and basically boiling down to “Someone Old, Something New,” this Sunday’s T Mag juxtaposed the exquisitely preserved mortal coils of a few elder rock gods with some very fancy, very NEW designer threads. There’s Lou Reed, Nick Cave, Dave Gahan, Michael Stipe, Ray Davies, David Johansen, and John Doe. Obviously there’s also Bryan Ferry wearing a suit because he was born in one. They call the post “Interactive” because in addition to a fancy scrolling apparatus there are song streams from each of the icons’ back catalogs just in case you have been living in a Nick. Speaking of, Mr. Cave is the only one to have turned up in his own suit, like a boss, and also is wearing the most expensive item of the entire spread with that Solange Azagury-Partridge ring, suggested retail price of $25,600. (Call (212) 879-9100 if you’re feeling like some retail therapy.) (UPDATE: Bryan Ferry is sporting his own threads, too.) The most expensive loaner suit modeled is the Roberto Cavalli on Dave Gahan (jacket, $4,615, and pants, $2,285), which sounds expensive until you consider the budget preserved on Iggy’s shirt.

At this point people know what to expect from Kutscher’s: The faded Catskills resort’s crumbling walls held together by mold, broken everything (we were forced to do our own DIY toilet plumbing, heard about another one that flushed boiling water), that lost-in-time Tammy Faye Makeup Counter. What we didn’t expect was the persistent skinny dipping from a paunchy and pasty middle-aged man armed with a Budweiser and nothing else. It happened Friday night while we were resting (not raging) in the Down Under Bar: We weren’t the only ones to notice; he was in no hurry to cover up after exiting the pool. When he finally did get dressed — after reclining on a lounger and slowly chugging that beer — he put on his shirt, surveyed the other swimmers, let it hang out for another minute or so, and finally put those trunks where they should’ve been all along.

Beyond taking place in beautiful Oslo, Norway one of Øya Festival‘s strongest points is its eclecticism: When I attended in 2006 (and met Amrit), I was excited by Enslaved, the Knife, and Morrissey performing in the same space (though not on the same stage at the same time, unfortunately). As you’ll see via Clint Heyer‘s atmosphere-establishing photos, the variety continued in 2010 via sets from Against Me!, Big Boi, Iggy Pop, M.I.A., Surfer Blood, Fucked Up, Robyn, the XX, etc. (1349, Nachtmystium, Trash Talk, Wardruna, and Altaar are not pictured, but they were there, furthering the idea of Øya’s adventurous cross-genre bookings.)

This past weekend was the Matt Groening-curated ATP, which went down in Butlins, Minehead, UK. Iggy Pop and Toumani Diabate were the highlights of the first night (along with ATP staples Built To Spill, Broadcast, Liars, and Shonen Knife). Day 2 featured performances from the xx and Boredoms (both bands would place twice, the latter did Boadrum with Zach Hill, Kid Millions, and drummers from Ponytail, DMBQ, and Pit Er Pat), Deerhunter, Danielson, She & Him, Thee Oh Sees, a late night Panda Bear set, among others. The last day seemed to focus on female performers: Juana Molina, the Raincoats, Joanna Newsom, Hope Sandoval, CocoRosie, etc. joined headliners Daniel Johnston and Spiritualized doing all of Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space. Groening last curated ATP in 2003.

Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper, Moby, and Henry Rollins all appear in Suck, a low-budget vampire comedy about musicians who become vampires to get famous. You might have liked it better when it was called Jennifer’s Body. And you probably loved it when it was called Date With The Night: The Nick Zinner Story. Watch the trailer at Videogum.

This past Friday we sent Dominick Mastrangelo to the 20th Annual Tibet House Benefit at Carnegie Hall. The lineup included longtime legends (Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, the concert’s Artistic Director Philip Glass) mixing it up with younger folks (Regina Spektor, Gogol Bordello, and the very young Tenzin Kunsel) and folks you might not have heard previously. Dominick tells us each band performed about three or so songs and reports: “Iggy did a stage dive into the first two rows and nobody caught him. But he got back up and finished off the set. His shirt stayed on for about 90 seconds of the first set…” That’s because nobody’s ever seen a stage dive at Carnegie Hall. In that spirit, Gogol Bordello, who started off seated, broke into their usual Gypsy-punk riotousness by set’s end. Though Eugene Hütz didn’t show much skin. Most punk of all? The night ended with everyone hopping back onstage for a performance of Patti Smith’s “People Have The Power.”
