“How can I call myself a straight man,” a barback asked me and my friend, “if I would rather look at Michael Hutchence than all these pretty girls?” He returned to his duties, collecting empty glasses and wiping down the bar, and we were left to ponder this question alone. A TV in the bar… More »

This column has started to take me to unforeseen territory: like a luxury theater in Naples, FL, the odd-man out amongst elderly retirees and pre-teen spring breakers killing a rainy afternoon at a showing of Divergent. The reason I wound up at Divergent is that it’s yet another YA franchise that has gone about curating… More »

Watch Courtney Barnett Cover The Entire INXS Album Kick

In late 2012, Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett performed INXS’ 1987 album Kick in its entirety for Melbourne-based Pure Pop Records’ “Summer Of Classic Albums” concert series and video from that performance has finally been uploaded. “I’ve never been as nervous as I am right now for any show I’ve ever done,” she said before starting… More »

London Grammar – “Devil Inside” (INXS Cover)

If we were the sort of website that posted more than just music, we would be absolutely all over every single trailer for the forthcoming Game Of Thrones season. As it is, we now have a reason to post about the show. The new trailer for the show’s fourth season features a new song: British… More »

Watch Bruce Springsteen Cover INXS In Sydney

Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band are on tour in Australia right now, and earlier this week, he brought out Eddie Vedder to cover “Highway To Hell,” paying tribute to the endlessly great and mostly Australian band AC/DC. But maybe Springsteen felt like that wasn’t enough, like he had to cover a band that… More »

Watch Arcade Fire Cover INXS’ “Devil Inside,” Hear “Reflektor” Mashed With “Need You Tonight”

Arcade Fire are currently in Australia for a series of shows around the Big Day Out Festival, and at Sidney Myer Music Bowl earlier tonight the band covered “Devil Inside” from Aussie superstars INXS. (Good timing: today is the late Michael Hutchence’s birthday.) The song came before a performance of “Here Comes The Night Time”… More »

In Memoriam: Bands We Lost In 2012

Each September, we recognize 40 new bands we look forward to listening to for years to come. And each December, we salute the veterans who’ve decided to pack up their knives and never ever get back together. This year’s class of quitters includes an anarcho-pop one-hit wonder, a multi-platinum Aussie rock band, and a New… More »

Liv Tyler Covers INXS And There’s A Music Video For It And Everything

INXS’s “Need You Tonight” is one of the all-time great karaoke jams because it’s a great song and because you don’t actually have to be any good at singing to do it justice; you get just go full-on breathy delivery. In a weird new ad for Givenchy perfume, though, Liv Tyler still finds a way… More »

Beck, Liars, St. Vincent & Os Mutantes – “Mediate” (INXS Cover)

Beck’s current Record Club has so far covered “Need You Tonight,” “Devil Inside,” “New Sensation,” from INXS’s Kick. There are likely a few more to come (if I remember correctly, Kick spawned 85 number one singles). This latest cover is the most fun they’ll have with a song, probably. The “Mediate” video starts with the… More »

Beck, Liars, St. Vincent & Os Mutantes – “Need You Tonight” (INXS Cover)

St. Vincent takes lead vocals, while Liars’s Angus Andrew backs her up for this Record Club submission. Previously we saw and heard them do Kick’s “Guns In The Sky,” “New Sensation” and “Devil Inside.” The original track was sexy already; St. Vincent keeps her voice at a breathy purr for this cover. Beck, Liars, St. Vincent & Os Mutantes – “New Sensation” (INXS Cover)

Following last week’s “Guns In The Sky,” Beck’s Record Club (it’s like a book club, but cooler) tackles the second track on Kick all quiet-like. More »

Beck Enlists Liars, St. Vincent, Os Mutantes To Cover INXS Kick

So far Beck and a rotating cast have tackled Skip Spence, Leonard Cohen, and the Velvet Underground. When St. Vincent Tweeted about collaborating with Mr. Hansen, Os Mutantes, and Liars on an upcoming Record Club, I’m assuming nobody thought they’d be undertaking INXS’s 1987 blockbuster Kick. I’d actually jokingly guessed it’d be Suicide’s ’77 debut. More »

Casting Couch: Michael Hutchence

Now that leads have been cast for the Bob Dylan, Missy Elliott, and Ian Curtis biopics — and we’ve given Jeff Buckley: The Movie due speculation — it’s time to guess who will fill Michael Hutchence’s shoes. The movie will be called Slide Away, and will hopefully do more for his legacy than Rock Star:More »
