Arcade Fire pulled off the upset of the night (or, at least, left a few people at home upset) by winning the Album Of The Year Grammy last night. Things looked good for the band when it became obvious that they’d be the last performance (nearly every performer went home with awards later in the broadcast). They did “Month Of May” first, then heard the announcement (by a very confused Barbara Streisand) from backstage before returning to quickly accept the award and then do “Ready To Start.”

Other winners last night include The Black Keys, Neil Young, Them Crooked Vultures, Muse, Cee Lo Green, and La Roux. Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, Kings Of Leon, Muse, Janelle Monae, Norah Jones, Drake, and Cee Lo Green also appeared. Watch Arcade Fire’s win below, as well as their two performances:

In the “Who Says” video, music is what John does in the wee hours when the party just ended, right before he rests up for the next day’s partying. Nice life. “If we just show a scene in a restaurant, how will people know for sure that it is a fancy restaurant?“

As with most events in the final act of his life, the King Of Pop’s memorial today at Los Angeles’ Staples Center comes with pomp, overwhelming media attention, and of course, controversy. The star-studded event — promising appearances from Stevie Wonder, Usher, Mariah Carey, Lionel Richie, Johny Mayer, Kobe Bryant, Jennifer Hudson, and the Jackson family — will reach an estimated 1 billion people worldwide via movie theaters, webcast, and telecast, while 11,000 fans (and 9,000 Jackson family guests) will attend the ticketed affair that countless thousands will celebrate just by lining the streets. Which is gonna cost $3.5MM to a city in a state that is already running a deficit, hence the whole thing not being a great idea to people who didn’t like him and/or like solvent governments. The details have been scant, but representatives and AEG Live promise a tribute befitting pop royalty. It starts at 1PM EST. Stream it at MySpace, or Hulu, or CNN, or on your television set.

“I know, I suck,” Billy Joel told a sold-out Shea Stadium Wednesday night, apologizing for scheduling a second Last Play At Shea at the Mets ballpark two days later. I attended the first night (yes I am from Long Island) and the special guests were Tony Bennett, Don Henley, John Mellencamp, and John Mayer, who I predicted because he just seems like a Billy Joel fan. The Beatles famously played Shea’s first rock concert in ’65, and it surprised absolutely no one when Macca came on night two; the three Beatles covers played on Wedneday were a hint. Between songs (every album was represented), the Piano Man spritzed his throat and mopped his brow with a towel. It looked sad on the Jumbotron, but thank god for that Jumbotron because my seats were abysmal. The guy who put encore “Let It Be” on YouTube was in the front row.

It isn’t easy being green, nor is it easy knowing how to react when Sad Kermit uploads videos to YouTube. If you’ve been on the internet before you’ve seen his syringe-ful take on “Hurt.” Today it’s all about his “Needle In The Hay” cover, which is mostly wrong with a little bit of right (nice recreation of the dark Luke Wilson moment from The Royal Tenenbaums). As Lindsay says, “Too soon Kermie. Too soon.” But still it exists, which means you have to watch it. Videogum also has John Mayer’s latest attempt at being funny in a Judd Apatow-directed clip which is meant to joke about who he is as an artist, but which Gabe says actually reveals just how fucking rich John Mayer really is:

I don’t think people realize how much money John Mayer actually has. It’s so much. He made a joke about it in that video of him recording with Kanye (go back and listen to “Daughters,” bitches), but it’s most visible in his apparent disregard for his media image. He’s the Regional Vice President of Fucking With Ryan Seacrest. Not to mention his weird drop in sets at New York comedy clubs, like whuuuuuut. Dude just doesn’t care, and you know who doesn’t care? People who can afford not to care. But I think this video really ends it. He’s not “playing” with his image at this point, he’s donkey punching it and then leaving it by a highway exit ramp.

We watched. And we agree.

But at least it has JB Smoove in it.

In the time since we last looked into John Mayer’s non-music related activities, he deleted his blog and organized/hosted a celebrity cruise. Long live rock ‘n’ roll. Naturally VH1′s Best Week Ever (a sponsor) was on hand to document the goodness. Lots of stuff went down, like a performance, an ’80s prom, and crafty soccer moms (Okay maybe said soccer moms didn’t go down — or maybe they did! — but they were there in full force…)

In fact BWE has a whole category devoted to the J May cruise. Well? Is he faking, or isn’t he? 4 million YouTube views later, you thought you had it sussed out (or, more likely, stopped caring). So did we. But then Tay dropped by Kimmel’s studio to bring the thunder of “Rain” live and in the flesh. Of course, you’re still gonna have to use YouTube to observe, but do it — it’s f’in mesmerizing. (Which is a kind way to describe the audience’s expressions during the Tay display.) Really though, you’ve gotta stick around for the post-performance interview. Note the stiff body while talking; okay, his voice is producing that sound, but when you’re using your normal speaking voice, is your torso that stiff? And please observe the death stare he gives Catherine Bell after her “Chocolate” assessment. If you are like him in either of those two respects … please let’s never meet. (via Best Week Ever)

Kids arrested at concerts? Happens all the time, and some bands bring out the riffraff more than others — but it’s safe to say everybody was a little surprised to read about the sixty-plus arrests made by Hershey, PA police at J. May’s Saturday night show. But then you remember his core demo (daughters) and the coo-coo for underage drinking PA police (been there), and you have yourself an incarceration party. John addressed the issue as he knows best: being funny on his blog.

This weekend, at my concert in Hershey Pennsylvania, 63 audience members were arrested for various drug and alcohol offenses. Seeing as I have always kept a strong line of communication with my fans, I’d like to take a moment to address this unfortunate incident.

First, to the 46 people accused of underage drinking; what were you thinking? You have your whole life to engage in underage drinking. What’s the hurry? I didn’t start underage drinking until I was 26. Underage drinking is not an function of age, but of style. And you kids are way too young to truly appreciate the nuances of true underage drinking.

If you took it in, these wacky collabs won’t be news for ya, but maybe they’re worth another watch. Like this one, bringing lady Madonna together with Eugene and Serge of Gogol Bordello for “La Isla Bonita.” Diggi-diggi-diggi-dhye.
