According to the helpful comment left by Mr. Quick, a “cornerstone” is “someone who can only have good sex when they are stoned.” And according to most who’ve spent time with Humbug, “Cornerstone” is the Alex Turner’s best lyrical and vocal performance yet. It’s already received a memorable video, and today sees the release of its very own EP, laced with three Humbug b-sides: the shadowy and distressed garage-spunk of “Fright Lined Dining Room” and the spikier “Sketchead” (sounding more like a Favourite Worst Nightmare castoff), and most prominent of the set, “Catapult,” a strong track co-written with co-producer Josh Homme. After your dad leaked Them Crooked Vultures’ self-titled debut, the band opted to stream the entire collection. It’s out officially 11/17 via DGC/Interscope. (Get a load of “Warsaw Or The First Breath You Take After You Give Up.”)

It’s about time someone had some pun with Thelonius Monk. “Mind Eraser, No Chaser” isn’t the first studio single we’ve heard from rock-demigod triptych Them Crooked Vultures’ self-titled debut — that’d be “New Fang” — and it isn’t the only instance of their titular wordplay (see also: “Interlude With Ludes,” “Caligulove”). But it’s the first of what will likely be a slew that takes advantage of the fact that Josh Homme isn’t the only dude herein with the ability to carry a melody. They’ve come a long way: From being just a couple of scrappy upstarts playing a bunch of unreleased material at the Metro this summer, three practically unknown dudes named John Paul Jones, Josh Homme, and Dave Grohl (along with megastar Alain Johannes of course) now have a full US tour plotted, kicking off last night at Stubb’s in Austin. And people are actually buying tickets! Crazy. We’ve been tracking down live clips from their forthcoming debut the past few months, but you’ll wanna try and see it for yourself: for a supergroup, they’re surprisingly vital. Josh, Dave, and John Paul didn’t make it easy for us to attend their first-ever live show: midnight on a Sunday in Chicago, which happened to be just hours after three days of the muggiest Lollapalooza to date, at the 1,100-capacity Metro rock club. Which had a broken air conditioner, as if the 1,100+ Zep/QOTSA/Foos/Nirvana superfans needed any help overheating. Still, it was a first look at a surprisingly good mindmeld, far from the undercooked vanity project years of similarly high-powered but ultimately directionless collabs have made it fair to expect.

And as it goes, Them Crooked Vultures didn’t make it any easier for us to attend their second-ever live show: at Melkweg in Amsterdam last night. Once again, longtime Homme-budsman Alain Johannes joined on guitars as the low-pro fourth Vulture, and I’ll bet the 12-song setlist was identical. Only this time there’s actually some serviceable YouTube that came out of it. (Relatively serviceable.) This is “Dead End Friends,” which helps demonstrate how Josh-centric Them can be, opening with a flash of their stoner-rock impulses and served with plentiful looks at Grohl’s whiplashing drums and chemistry with JPJ.

After three days of extreme sweat and fatigue from running between stages in Grant Park for Lollapalooza (post TK), ordinarily there’d be zero appeal to a midnight Sunday show in an overcapacity rock club without a working air conditioner. But there was nothing ordinary about last night’s gig at the 1,100-person Metro in Wrigleyville. And it went even deeper than the trio of marquee rock stars at the center of it all: with record leaks having killed the “event” of the album release, and YouTube and music blogs (ahem) making it impossible to resist hearing a band’s new live songs before they come to your town and present them personally, there’s no such thing as a communal listening experience anymore. But this was one time where everyone was in the same boat. Nobody knew what to expect from Them Crooked Vultures, aside from that Dave Grohl/Josh Homme/John Paul Jones lineup that sounded like an alt rock holiday party in-joke gone too far — not a song’s leaked, not a descriptor afloat aside from Dave’s 2005 assertion that this group “wouldn’t suck.” He didn’t set the bar high, but hey. He was right.

The Foo/Queens/Zep supergroup first rumored in 2005 will play Chicago’s Metro on Sunday. Tickets go on sale Thursday morning. There’s even an official site with links to their Twitter, MySpace, and Facebook and those are obviously impossible to fake. According to Antiquiet an album and tour are on the way.
