This is how you stunt for publicity: An unlikely assemblage of superstars have banded together to raise awareness about the global clean water crisis by climbing Africa’s tallest peak, Tanzania’s Mt. Kilimanjaro. That’s 19.340 feet, the very typing of which alone seizes my height-fearing heart. The troupe of charitable backpackers includes Santi White, Lupe Fiasco, Jessica Biel, Emile Hirsche, Jacques Costeau’s granddaughter, and Kenna, who is the group leader and motivational playlist curator (with some assistance from Santigold, I’d suspect), which includes Arcade Fire, Daft Punk, YYYs, TVOTR, N.E.R.D., and can be streamed at MySpace.

They’re scheduled to summit tomorrow and as of this posting are at 14,868 feet — you can track their progress at summitonthesummit.com, the worst website experience ever. There you can “sponsor a foot” to raise awareness of the global water crisis, and hopefully enough money so next time Kenna can hire a designer who doesn’t know flash. Jokes aside, this is a good cause and impressive feat, at an impressive number of feet. People.com says Jessica Biel is doing “awesome” and cracking jokes at the head of the pack. Poke around the site to view video bits they’ve posted (better than expected WiFi up there) and let us know how Santi’s holding up; it’s tricky and time consuming but it’s tough to complain in pajamas at an altitude of 0 feet. The circumstances surrounding this one are a little murky, but here’s what we gather: At some point, someone in camp Leon commissioned a remix album for Because Of The Times, and Kenna (along with Virginia Beach compatriot Chad Hugo) got the call to take on the raw-chugging rocker “My Party.” But as these things go, the album ended up a music-industry fatality, and Kenna ‘n’ the Neptune man were sitting on their beat-laced take on the KoL track. Talks abound about what’ll happen to the completed cuts, but it looks like they’re gonna be seeping their way around the web soon enough. Yesterday, the stripped, rim-clickin’ “My Party” made it into our inbox, so get yer grab on.
