Kid Cudi – “Mr. Rager” Video

In the video for his brooding anthem “Mr. Rager,” Kid Cudi battles a comically huge mob of weapon-wielding miscreants. The fighting itself is dimly lit and badly choreographed, the two surprise endings are both lame, and Cudi himself does not exactly make the world’s most believable badass street-fighter. Still, anything that brings to mind memories of this might well be worth seven minutes of your time. Surface To Air’s Jeremy Rozan directs.

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy‘s most triumphant brass fanfare meets the Star Wars font it was always intended for, along with a cameo from Rihanna with Ye on top of a cop car and Cudi in red leather, both MJ style (our [redacted] dead) and a nod to Enter The Void‘s opening title sequence, all courtesy of one Hype Williams.

St. Vincent, Kid Cudi, Cage, Roots Do “Maniac” On Fallon

Kid Cudi packed the stage with lots of friends for “Maniac.” St. Vincent did her sample — from Actor‘s “The Strangers” live, while Cage sang/rapped and the Roots backed them. The best instrument on stage, besides St. Vincent’s pipes (and Cage’s leather jacket), was the iPhone used for extra percussion. Watch:

Another G.O.O.D. Fridays track from Mr. West, a man who you could say is overexposed, if you were a dick. This one features Jay-Z and Kid Cudi, some vocals from Charlie Wilson, and a samples of Curtis Mayfield’s velvety “The Makings Of You,” compliments of producer Pete Rock.

There’s another sample at work, and that’s a slowed down clip of the introductory “uhh”s from Syl Johnson’s “Different Strokes,” an audio snippet lodged in my head from growing up listening to too much of Public Enemy’s “Fear Of A Black Planet” (sample hits at 0:55). The internet’s given that sample less play, but has rightly scoped out something else about “The Joy,” and that’s that Jay-Z back in fighting shape herein.

Common, Pusha T, Kid Cudi, Big Sean, and Charlie Wilson guest on “Good Friday,” the laid-back, Freddie Scott (or Biz Markie?) sampling title track from @KanyeWest‘s forward-thinking digital singles series. The rapper’s apparently been having a blast at NY’s Fashion Week kickoff (“This is the best night of my life,” he tweeted tonight, hours after proclaiming “This might be the greatest day of my life!!!”). His early morning at Boom Boom Room looked pretty best as well.

Converse STEPPED IT UP (punstyles) with this year’s installment of their commercial/song experiment, bringing a live show component to the campaign. I’m still not entirely clear on how people got in and ticketed to the invite/RSVP free show, but folks were there, drinking free drinks, unsure of what to make of it all. If you didn’t make it, you missed a performance by Best Coast, another by Cudi, a DJ set from Rostam, and the ultimate and slightly awkward moment where the three strangers got up on stage to create their moment in commercial appeal. However Jessica Amaya‘s beautiful photos bring some life to the affair, and there’s video here of “All Summer,” MHOW version.

When we posted “All Summer,” the Converse-funded collaboration between Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino, Kid Cudi, and Rostam Batmanglij, it was accompanied by a photo of the trio mugging with over-sized versions of their own heads. They put the heads to use with a game of musical masks in this video that finds “Cudi, Rostam, and Bethany romp[ing] in their warm apartment. All summer.” Ominous.

Converse just released the next in its series of unlikely collaborations — last summer it was Santigold, Julian Casablancas and Pharrell doing “My Drive Thru.” This year, it’s an explicit summer anthem — Bethany Cosentino sings “All year long / We wait for sun” between Kid Cudi’s verses, while Rostam Batmanglij contributes the melody and instrumentation.
