It’s the Halloweekend, and today we’ve got some of the best tracks from the last month that fit nicely into whatever theme-heavy environment you’re trying to create. Whether it’s a spare spectralness (Atlas Sound), a haunted heaviness (Crystal Stilts), or just some aggro rap music with a titular affiliation to the Antichrist (“666″), here’s to hoping these 13 tracks hit home on some level. And, apologies in advance: “Werewolf Bar Mitzvah” did not make the cut. I can’t believe they recorded that, until I remember that it’s Tracy Morgan we’re talking about here. Expectations are irrelevant. Hit the jump for the download.
It’s gray, it is wet, and it feels positively gauche to jam to anything that would feel right at a beach. So to help to fill the void created by expunging “sunny music” from your daily playlist, and to show solidarity with nature, here are 13 tracks representing some of the finest tracks the internet’s offered lately that also feel right for the season. This means darkened post-punk (The Soft Moon) and shadowy production hits (Purity Ring, ASAP Rocky), a run of chilly arpeggio chime (newcomers Dive, the prolific Atlas Sound), and the likes of Kurt Vile, Caveman, and Family Band, who have the bittersweetly seasoned air of quintessential fall artists. As always, I spent altogether too much time sequencing this for maximum flow, so if indulge me the straight run through at least once before going ala cart with the sequencing.

Enjoy:
PROGRESS REPORT: Adam Granduciel discusses Slave Ambient, his band’s first full-length in nearly four years.

In addition to having what is arguably the greatest band name of all-time, Philly’s the War On Drugs are one of the most criminally underrated bands currently making music. This might be due to the fact that up until earlier this year–with the release of the Future Weather EP–the band had not let loose of any music for a long time. Since the release of Wagonwheel Blues in 2008, the band toured intermittently, recorded intermittently, and spent a lot of time doing god only knows what down in Philly. Also, founding member Kurt Vile went off and did his own excellent thing, subsequently taking other founding member Adam Granduciel out on the road to play in his backing band, The Violators. Long story short, it’s been a minute since the War on Drugs put out a record. However, next month the band will release Slave Ambient, their first new full-length in nearly four years. Given the deeply textured, heavily-layered production of the album, it’s not surprising it took so long to make. We called up Granduciel to discuss the excellent new tunes and find out what’s up with him and Mr. Vile.
