High Places – “Sonora” Video

L.A. synth-exoticist duo High Places have already dropped a couple of deeply weird and beguiling video for "Altos Lugares" and "Sophia," two tracks from their new album Original Colors. But their new clip for "Sonora" is by far the strangest and the most watchable out of all of them. In director Keith Musil's clip, bloodied… More »

Double Take: Liars – They Were Wrong, So We Drowned

I've talked about the reception Liars' They Were Wrong, So We Drowned received in 2004. Places that loved their 2001 debut They Threw Us All In A Trench And Stuck A Monument On Top trashed the noisier witch-inspired collection: Rolling Stone gave it one star out of five ("An electronic-noise collage that sounds disturbingly rooted… More »

Pitchfork Music Festival 2010: Friday Recap

Amrit and I saw Inception just before the start of this year’s Pitchfork Festival, so you have to read this post with the understanding that the first day may have been a dream, or maybe you are in a dream reading the review, or maybe this is a shared dream (deep). So it was a… More »

Liars – “Pleasure Is Boss”

Mute just released this B-side to Liars' "The Overachievers," from Sisterworld. On first listen, this thunderous track does have some resemblance to Nick Cave's "Pleasure Is The Boss," until Angus Andrew's hard-to-hear vocals start pouring out of him. More »

Beck’s Record Club Does “Never Tear Us Apart”

It's the one we've been waiting for... As Beck & Co. continue their track-by-track move through Kick, they finally arrive at iconic '80s ballad/prom song "Never Tear Us Apart." As on "Need You Tonight," DJ Annie Clark handles lead vocals, and puts her intonations to good use. She digs deeply with the help of Liars,… More »

ATP 2010: Curated By Matt Groening @ Butlin’s Holiday Centre, Minehead, UK

This past weekend was the Matt Groening-curated ATP, which went down in Butlins, Minehead, UK. Iggy Pop and Toumani Diabate were the highlights of the first night (along with ATP staples Built To Spill, Broadcast, Liars, and Shonen Knife). Day 2 featured performances from the xx and Boredoms (both bands would place twice, the latter… More »

Liars – “The Overachievers” Video

Taking a break from clogging bloglines by doing his best Michael Hutchence with Beck, Angus Andrew and his Liars have unleashed a Patrick Bateman-baiting video for Sisterworld's "The Overachievers." On the track, AA gets frank about domestic life, his lines about homegrown banality ("I bought a house with you, we settled down WITH CATS, there… More »

Beck, Liars, St. Vincent & Os Mutantes – “Mediate” (INXS Cover)

Beck's current Record Club has so far covered "Need You Tonight," "Devil Inside," "New Sensation," from INXS's Kick. There are likely a few more to come (if I remember correctly, Kick spawned 85 number one singles). This latest cover is the most fun they'll have with a song, probably. The "Mediate" video starts with the… More »

Beck, Liars, St. Vincent & Os Mutantes – “Need You Tonight” (INXS Cover)

St. Vincent takes lead vocals, while Liars's Angus Andrew backs her up for this Record Club submission. Previously we saw and heard them do Kick's "Guns In The Sky," "New Sensation" and "Devil Inside." The original track was sexy already; St. Vincent keeps her voice at a breathy purr for this cover. Beck, Liars, St. Vincent & Os Mutantes – “New Sensation” (INXS Cover)

Following last week's "Guns In The Sky," Beck's Record Club (it's like a book club, but cooler) tackles the second track on Kick all quiet-like. More »

Todd P’s Inaugural MtyMx Festival: A Photo Essay

[Editor's Note: The following guest post is by Ryan Muir, one of NYC's most hardworking and talented photographers. After spending the better part of five days lugging his camera equipment all over Austin on our behalf, he waited for hours in a parking lot for a bus to Monterrey, Mexico to attend NYC promoter ToddMore »

Beck Enlists Liars, St. Vincent, Os Mutantes To Cover INXS Kick

So far Beck and a rotating cast have tackled Skip Spence, Leonard Cohen, and the Velvet Underground. When St. Vincent Tweeted about collaborating with Mr. Hansen, Os Mutantes, and Liars on an upcoming Record Club, I'm assuming nobody thought they'd be undertaking INXS's 1987 blockbuster Kick. I'd actually jokingly guessed it'd be Suicide's '77 debut. More »

SXSW 2010: The Wrap Up

We saw a bunch of bands this past week. Not every set was memorable, but there were more than enough highlights to make the stiff necks and barking feet worth it. Here's Wednesday, Thursday, Gibbarday, and SXSW's metal shows, and more. This last post contains our notes, and photos from our intrepid photographers -- RyanMore »

SXSW 2010: Thursday In Photos

On some nights you can fool yourself into forgetting that industry weeks like SXSW have shifted from being about discovery to being full-on music festivals. Yesterday was not one of those days. Aside from the always-on-point imprint True Panther Sounds' top-to-bottom burner at Ms. Bea's -- giving us our first look at Hunx and Hi… More »

St. Vincent, Liars, Os Mutantes Join Beck’s Record Club

Annie Clark doesn't mention the album they tackled, but the St. Vincent mastermind did Tweet that she teamed up with Tropicalia stalwarts Os Mutantes and Liars for one of Beck's Record Club collaborations and that it'll be online "soonish" and was "serious fun." (Guess: First Suicide record?)… More »

Liars – “Proud Evolution (Thom Yorke 500qd Remix)”

A couple days ago we heard Devendra Banhart inhabit Liars' excellent "The Overachievers," reversing the frequency of the opposites attract/urban cynic vs. L.A. hippie love song for the deluxe edition of Sisterworld’s Reinterpretations disc. Various able-minded individuals also helped build the "reinterpretation" collection's intriguing tracklist, but Radiohead fanatics have inevitably zeroed in on Thom Yorke'… More »

Liars – “The Overachievers” (Devendra Banhart & The Grogs Redo) (Stereogum Premiere)

One of my favorite Sisterworld songs is the sweetly sarcastic urban cynic vs. L.A. hippie love song "The Overachievers." What better way to invert the frequency (and bio-cars, woodsy walks, etc.) than to have longtime Hairy Faerie Devendra Banhart offer a mellowed-out, dew-dripped campfire version? DB & The Grogs' sleepy, somewhat eerie take is part… More »

Liars – “Scissor” Video

There's a certain paranoia lurking beneath the laconic vocalisms Angus layers at the outset of "Scissor," the opening track to Liars typically excellent new LP Sisterworld. Andrew uses that storyteller's pace and injection of unease to foreshadow then launch into a claustrophobic freakout. Reset. And repeat. It's a push-pull of dramatic tension befitting this short… More »

Radiohead Might Have Wrapped Up A New Album

According to a blog post by LA Times writer Jia-Rui Cook, the guys recently held a "wrap party" after a three-week Los Angeles recording session. Said soiree reportedly took place 1/30 at Nigel Godrich's place in the Hollywood Hills. Hollywood people attended. Yeah, the whole thing could be conjecture or a lie or whatever, but… More »
