Perhaps the most ambitious amateur music-archiving project on the internet is Jeff Glenn’s Lost Jukebox series. Glenn, a musician and collector who died in 2009, put together 240 CD-Rs containing forgotten ’60s pop tracks. Some of the names are familiar or semi-familiar (the Association, Bobby Sherman, the American Breed); the vast remainder is composed of… More »

Local Natives – “Breakers” Video

In the video for “Breakers,” the strong first single from Local Natives’ much-anticipated sophomore effort Hummingbird, we see a bunch of unexplained images — astronauts walking on rocky beaches, homemade demon-masks, bodies slowly rolling down staircases. The band themselves direct alongside Jaffe Zinn. Watch it below. More »

Austin City Limits 2010 In Photos

Austin City Limits hosted some of the nicest weather in years alongside an impressive line up with main headliners The Strokes, Muse and the Eagles. Some tough scheduling choices though needed to be made like choosing Sonic Youth or Vampire Weekend, Broken Bells or Silversun Pickups, Band Of Horses or the Flaming Lips, and Muse… More »

Local Natives – “Wide Eyes” Video

A man fights off an antagonistic shark that likes to fight dirty and watch you have sex (also dirty) in this video for Local Natives’s “Wide Eyes.” We brought you the Teen Daze remix a few months back, too. More »

FYF Fest 2010 In Photos

This past weekend L.A. hosted the heavily (and according to various reports, perhaps overly) attended Fuck Yeah Festival. Great lineup, though apparently not the most easily navigated festival experience, according to our forces on the ground. We sent photographers Graeme Flegenheimer and Patrick Collier, who suffered through $4 water bottle prices and severe crowding to… More »

Pitchfork Music Festival 2010: Sunday Recap

The final day of 2010’s Pitchfork Festival was just as hot as Saturday, with stages that needed quick shots of energy to pull the audience out of its languor. Girls were pretty but wispy — though they sounded stronger as I walked over to Washed Out, who had the audience clapping along to his set. More »

Local Natives – “Wide Eyes (Fool’s Gold Remix)” (Feat. Aristotle Pop A Bottle)

With two remixes of Local Natives’ “Wide Eyes” (complements of Suckers and Teen Daze) in the can, there would be no need to post yet another. Unless it jacked up the original with The-Dreamy ATL club beats and a wet verse from a rapper named Aristotle Pop A Bottle. Oh hai:… More »

Local Natives – “Wide Eyes (Teen Daze Remix)”

Mysterious Canadians Teen Daze do this melodic, synth-saturated version of Local Natives’s “Wide Eyes.” The Suckers remix of this song was all deconstructed and noisy, but this one has a lush, polished feel unlike either the Suckers version or the original. More »

Local Natives – “Wide Eyes (Suckers Remix)”

Here’s a tour document of sorts, coming a month into Local Natives’ seven-week tour with Brooklyn’s Suckers. Both bands have had Yeasayer thrown out as reference points — Local Natives for their occasional dips into African rhythms, Suckers for their colorful and ebullient aesthetic and vocals (not to mention Anand Wilder’s production of their BTWMore »

Local Natives – “World News” Video

The pre-Ferguson video for Local Natives’ “Airplanes” featured chilly skeletons and crumbling interiors. This Matthew Lessner-directed “World News” clip takes us to the sunny, sandy outdoors, a place with wild flowers, floral bathing suits, citrus salads, finger sandwiches, and beach-Frisbee. Even if the oxygen masks, etc., are meant to be cheeky, it’s a better fit… More »

Local Natives Bring “Airplanes” To Craig Ferguson

In a twist of television magic, ascendant Los Angeles locals Local Natives appeared on The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson the same they played a sold-out show with Suckers at Bowery Ballroom. Dudes are literally everywhere (or Craig pre-recorded last night’s show). The band’s set at the Levi’s/FADER fort was one of the more… More »

Coachella 2010: Pavement, Thom Yorke, Gorillaz

Friday got us dancing with LCD and Jay-Z, Saturday featured less clothing, and Sunday closed things out with a generally mellower lineup (plus more amazing weather). It was fitting the reunited Pavement played “In The Mouth A Desert.” Because the desert is where people were watching them. Even if it didn’t feel especially arid. Le… More »

SXSW 2010: The Wrap Up

We saw a bunch of bands this past week. Not every set was memorable, but there were more than enough highlights to make the stiff necks and barking feet worth it. Here’s Wednesday, Thursday, Gibbarday, and SXSW’s metal shows, and more. This last post contains our notes, and photos from our intrepid photographers — RyanMore »

New Local Natives Video -? “Airplanes”

Our post of Local Natives’ pleasantly drummed “Sun Hands” came with a reference to Yeasayer because of its dusky, shimmering All Hour Cymbals-esque harmonies. You can hear another Gorilla Manor track by entering the dusty ragtag mansion of this Mark Waring-directed stop-motion/real-time video where the band members’ portraits rotate into skeletons, we get a meaningful… More »

New Local Natives – “Sun Hands”

If you’re not into everything Odd Blood — aka the album that finds Yeasayer finding Ween (really, listen to “The Children” again and then flashback to God Ween Satan) — no worries: Los Angeles Frenchkiss signees Local Natives offer up dusky, shimmering “old-school” Yeasayer-ish harmonies in “Sun Hands.” Not to be confused with “Sunrise.” You… More »
