MEN – “All The Way Thru”

The former Bikini Kill/Le Tigre leader Kathleen Hanna is back with her new band the Julie Ruin, and that is a glorious thing. But Hanna isn't the only ex-Le Tigre member currently getting ready to drop an LP. JD Samson, who joined Le Tigre in time for sophomore album Feminist Sweepstakes and who was last… More »

Le Tigre’s JD Samson Is Totally Broke, You Guys

The Le Tigre/MEN member JD Samson has an article up on the Huffington Post in which she talks about the financial difficulties faced by musicians in general and herself in particular: "I'm 33 years old and I can't make coffee. I don't know how to use Excel, or bartend, or wait tables, and I'm… More »

Scenes From Coachella ’11: Kanye & More From Sunday

Sunday at Indio featured CSS, Delorean, HEALTH, Lightning Bolt, OFF!, the Strokes, a riot-free Death From Above 1979, MEN, Twin Shadow, Wiz Khalifa, and others, but it seems folks were largely focused on who Kanye may or may not bring on stage with him for his festival closing set. Justin Vernon came along for the… More »

MEN – “Who Am I To Feel So Free” (Feat. Antony Hegarty)

Antony really goes for it in JD Samson & Co's Talk About Body dance anthem, "Who Am I To Fee So Free," a track that feels like a particularly amped update on the smokey disco of Hercules & Love Affair’s “Blind.” It's hard not to think about I Am A Bird Now's gorgeous,… More »

The 10 Best Videos Of The Week

The best videos this week are mind- (and pixel-) bending clips from !!! and Nite Jewel, sexy videos from MEN and Robyn, a Halloween-themed massacre from La Sera, and a glossy, District 9-esque thriller shot on location in India from You Say Party. It takes a lot to keep people watching the whole three minutes,… More »

MEN – “Off Our Backs” Video (Stereogum Premiere)

Their performances are heavier on performance, but this video for MEN's "Off Our Backs" is pure eye and ear candy. The latter is mostly due to JD Samson's singsong chorus, which, like Le Tigre's best chants, worms its way into your brain. I could almost hear a teen-actress-turned-singer doing this radio-friendly single, though lyric… More »

Warm Up 2010 At MoMA PS1 Schedule

A couple of months ago MoMA PS1 Director Klaus Biesenbach -- the person who organized MoMA's ridiculously popular Marina Abramović exhibition, among other things -- asked me if I'd want to help curate shows for this summer's Warm Up series at PS1. You may have attended one/more of these Warm Up events in the past… More »

Op-Ed: An Artists’ Dialogue On CocoRosie’s Grey Oceans

A few years ago I wrote a positive review of CocoRosie's The Adventures of Ghosthorse And Stillborn. Too positive, it turns out: The publication that assigned it killed the piece at the 11th hour and instead ran a snarky takedown. I'd never had that happen before and I've been championing challenging music for a long… More »

SXSW 2010: Wednesday In Photos

Here's a tip if you're going to one of these industry festival type things: If IAMSOUND is having a party, you should attend that party. Just like this past CMJ, the L.A.-based imprint owned their night, pulling together an eclectic lineup that showcased the right bands, all having a moment: Scott already posted More »
