Even if you’re not a fan (I’m not) you gotta give Green Day credit, first for introducing Lookout! to mall-punks back in the day, later for showcasing political awareness on an MTV-sized scale. Now middle-aged dads, with armfuls of Grammys and a Broadway pedigree, they commanded the biggest crowd at Lolla so far this weekend. Some young fans were even plucked by Billie Joe to join them onstage (the trio’s Stones/Beatles medley was presumably a gift to their parents). Of course, much more happened Saturday (I’d implore you to follow us on Twitter, but (SURPRISE) AT&T is not cooperating), so Amrit and I will wrap a deeper Saturday and Sunday recap into a single post tomorrow. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse made over $68 million last night, and is sold out until Christmas, so this Metric video, for their contribution to the Twilight: Eclipse Soundtrack, may be the closest you get to the movie for a while. The clip includes scenes of Bella, Edward, Jacob, etc. mixed in with footage of a moody Emily Haines walking in the woods. In another scene, Haines is wearing a hoodie and dark eyeliner while writing in her journal. Metric know their demographic, at least for this song. The video was directed by Brantley Gutierrez.

Metric’s Fantasies came out a little over a year ago, but the band’s still releasing new videos for the album. “Help, I’m Alive” and “Sick Muse” got videos last year, and they released the official video for album closer “Stadium Love” over the weekend. The video follows the spirit of the song’s lyrics, if not the letter — “Stadium Love” calls for match ups like “Spider versus bat / Tiger versus rat / Rabbit versus dove” and the video mixes footage of the band playing with clips of buffalo, seals, and bears fighting right when the song’s squelchy keyboard chorus hits. No human versus animal fighting though, just lead singer Emily Haines petting a lion.

After Thom Yorke, Bon Iver & St. Vincent, and Grizzly Bear & Beach House made soundtracks to multi-million dollar hormonal-teenage-vampires-in-love franchises a safe place for indie artists to premiere their wares, you had to figure more folks from Stereogum’s tag cloud would lineup at the chance to lure Bella & Edward heads from the land of the wasted youth. Every half-hour for the next bunch of hours (because WEB STRATEGY), the folks behind The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the third installment in the Twilight trilogy, will be revealing (on MySpace, whatever that is) another track title from the film’s OST. So far, so indie, and also so vampire-punny: Beck and Bat For Lashes (+1 point for Alex Patsavas there) offer the collab track “Let’s Get Lost,” and Vampire Weekend (nice) contribute the original “Jonathan Low.” Also on board: Metric with a title track of sorts in “Eclipse (All Yours),” the Black Keys (“Heavy In Your Arms”), the Dead Weather, Fanfarlo, and Florence + The Machine. We saw a bunch of bands this past week. Not every set was memorable, but there were more than enough highlights to make the stiff necks and barking feet worth it. Here’s Wednesday, Thursday, Gibbarday, and SXSW’s metal shows, and more. This last post contains our notes, and photos from our intrepid photographers — Ryan Muir, Graeme Flegenheimer, Pooneh Ghana (and her polaroids), and Linda Flores — from Friday and Saturday in Austin. As the news cycle speeds up, it’s difficult to hear groups for the first time at events of this sort, but we did stumble upon a few things. Including things we’d like to forget, a la the disappearance of the taco truck on Red River, the unseasonably cold weather, ice tea-flavored vodka, and that people actually use the term “glow-fi.” That, and plenty of unforgettable things that were far from new, like Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and “Hole.”

On some nights you can fool yourself into forgetting that industry weeks like SXSW have shifted from being about discovery to being full-on music festivals. Yesterday was not one of those days. Aside from the always-on-point imprint True Panther Sounds’ top-to-bottom burner at Ms. Bea’s — giving us our first look at Hunx and His Punx (“aka The Punkettes”), the tabletop DJ jams of Teengirl Fantasy, and the throwback jitter pop of Magic Kids, along with those previously loved (the always excellent morning benders, glorious tropically percussive synth dance jams via Tanlines’ best set yet and the straight-up crowd surfing at Delorean’s unforgettable 2AM closer) — Thursday brought us big names you’ve known for years, here in Austin with little to prove: Liars, Broken Social Scene, Band Of Horses, and a 4AM Andrew W.K. set among them. Discovery? No. Photogenic good times? Here’s a slate of shots from photographers Ryan Muir and Graeme Flegenheimer to that point.

Just when you thought we were putting a cap on our ongoing coverage of how it’s been a Very Phoenix Summer, with the logical extension of the band’s brand expansion (stumping for fun-loving luxury SUVs, naturally), here we are today — another day, another Phoenix remix. But this one’s fun! Pretty fun. Instead of dub and chill club, past Decomposed session vets transform the Wolfgang tune du jour (“Fences,” which is a first as far as I can tell) into a cowbell-pitched house cut, relocating the band from the ’80s to the decade later. While you enjoy that, pass through these pics by Andrew Youssef from last night’s show at the Greek Theater on a stacked bill that also featured the Emily Haines Band and the Soft Pack.

At Seattle’s biggest music festival, rain is not unexpected; still, the downpours at Bumbershoot ’09 were scary even for this neck of the Pacific Northwest. No bands got electrocuted, but the sound cut out during Black Eyed Peas’ set, so that’s something. Franz Ferdinand and Modest Mouse were huge draws as the three-day event came to an end last night: Isaac Brock even claimed he was performing with a cracked rib, “but I did it to myself.” The previous day, Yeah Yeah Yeahs enjoyed a rare break in the weather and introduced a new touring keyboardist named Jessica. Other highlights: kids crowd-surfing on an inflatable turtle during Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head, the reunited Os Mutantes at the KEXP Lounge, and De La Soul covering Gorillaz’ “Feel Good Inc” with a full band. Photogs Josh Bis and Josh Lovseth were on hand to capture all the excitement.

Interpol frontman Paul Banks’ Julian Plenti Is… Skyscraper came out a couple of days ago. In the official Javier Aguilera-directed video for his post-punk “Games For Days,” Banks plays two characters. The dark Paul teams up with Metric’s Emily Haines — the two get cozy, whip out the handcuffs, and trash a hotel room together — while the white-clad Paul’s left to find and bum about the aftermath.
