As far as full-on noon-to-2AM marathon set hunting goes, Wednesday’s spread won’t be topped this year. In addition to bringing us memorable sets from two bands we’ll be watching much more closely in Sleigh Bells and Golden Silvers, the day delivered solid lineups at every turn. I joined photographer Jessica Amaya at ForceField’s day party at Pianos for lunchtime post-rock in Seven Saturdays, a taut and energizing set from the very promising (and very busy) Surfer Blood, and the ten-person, chipper chant-and-pop collective Still Flyin’ (Jessica stayed on for Stricken Sound, Hollow Paw, Real Estate, and These United States), before teaming up with Kyle Dean Reinford at Santos Party House for HypeMachine‘s bill of Sleigh Bells, Theophilus London, VEGA, and Midnight Juggernauts.

After that I joined just about every available label rep in NYC for the still-unsigned BTW Freelance Whales at Bowery Ballroom.

In “Walk Me Home,” the always generous Dayve Hawk dialed up almost 17 minutes of creepy, creaking mutating dance music (aka a “love letter to the art of horror movie scoring.”) It’s an occasional piece. As Hawk notes:

ARAWA is solid gold, so when they asked me to contribute to their 2nd annual Halloween lovefest I was all about it.

There are more than enough twists, turns, hidden passageways, and icy synth patterns in the resulting house (music) of horrors to keep any Halloween lovefest on its toes.

M83′s Saturdays=Youth is a big hit, everybody. Congratulations. You know we love it, the P4kers seem to enjoy it, etc. Best part: Anthony’s just 26 and, judging by his perennial remix parade, showing no signs of letting up anytime soon. Today’s example of M83ery comes with his retouching of Aussie band Midnight Juggernauts’ “Shadows” which, in its original incarnation, is a gauzy, mid-tempo disco-funk thing. In our favorite French alchemist’s hands, though, the track’s transformed into a string of cinema-ready atmospherics laced with his signature sounds — tinkling pianos, celestial vocal coos, synths painting a wide open night sky. It’s gold, Jerry — and it seems like when M83′s involved, it always is.
