After watching the recently unearthed footage of Arcade Fire playing a house party in 2002 and a 17-year-old Robin Pecknold covering Radiohead and Simon & Garfunkel, I thought it would be fun to collect more early videos of our favorite bands from before we ever heard them. Well, fun for us, maybe not so much for them…

Morningwood frontwoman Chantal Claret’s gone from a truffle-loving death-obsessed nine year-old spilling her guts to Oprah to pied piper for folks to please take off their clothes to the confused and coke-snorting American Appareled LastNightsParty puppet in the Adam Neustader-directed video for “Sugarbaby.” She’s slightly more bearable in Muppet form (not really). The video’s labeled “dirty,” but it’s a puppet, so use your own NSFW discretion.

Remember That Time Morningwood’s Chantal Claret Was Nine And On Oprah?

The last time we saw Chantal Claret, she was giving Paul Scheer a little just-after-12AM morningwood at the Human Giant Marathon. And we thought that maybe that’d be the last time we saw Chantal Claret, period. Not so: today Brooklyn Vegan posts this recently excavated footage of Chantal on Oprah, when she was just a nine-year-old truffle-loving, well-traveled, death-obsessed little girl. Awww.

“I like thinking about what happens when I’m dead because I wanna be ready.” Wasn’t she precious? Well you know how the story turned out; little Ms. Claret escaped childhood without facing any such tragic fate, and went from loving operas and art and books about Egypt to simply demanding that you t-t-t-take off your clothes. Oprah should do a follow-up!

The National @ The Human Giant MTV Marathon 5/19/07

Everywhere we looked Friday night was a mind explosion. The surreality of the scene at MTV studios was best captured by Aziz and Fred Armisen squaring off in a Guitar Hero challenge — using the Times Square big screen as their personal Xbox monitor. (Aziz’s excuse for missing notes: “There’s a delay on the jumbotron!”) Or maybe it was by seeing the National play “Mistaken For Strangers” with a ginormous glamour shot of Ashlee’s reconstructed nose looming over Matt’s shoulder? The Human Giant troupe took over MTV and MTV2 for 24 hours — ostensibly to earn a second season for their sketch show, actually to bring the network a full day of some laughs, unpredictability, good music, and Aphex Twin’s “Come To Daddy” beaming perversely over 44th and Broadway. One comedian’s dream was 322 little girls’ Times Square nightmare.

We got up to the studios shortly after John Krasinksi, Will Arnett, Michael Cera, and Rob Riggle had their hilarious hostage stand-off, but managed to catch plenty of insanity (and watch a fleet of young comics bow at Bob Odenkirk’s feet) before leaving at 6AM. Riggle’s wand-toting, camera-mugging security guard character (Cliff Carver) was a reliable go-to for laughs in the wee hours (so was Nick Kroll as the gay, Rob Huebel-crushing/Paul Scheer hating/”Aziz Aziz”-calling craft services coordinator Fabrice Fabrice, and as Paul’s Turkeytini quaffing uncle). The only band we got to enjoy was the National (check out the vid of “Mistaken For Strangers” and “Apartment Story” — mislabeled, yes … blame the interns). Also saw Morningwood, but they don’t really count.

We’ve pulled for Aziz from the start; remember our Aziz Punched A Wall contest? He’s come a long way, desi. All this couldn’t happen to a better group of guys. (Paul‘s really nice too! Rob … we haven’t met.) So the show gets a well deserved second season, and hopefully a second 24 hour marathon next time their heads are on the Viacom chopping block. For at least a day, we forgot the abomination of MTV’s current roster of programming via some good old fashioned fun and lots and lots of red bull. Though, Aziz, we’d totally watch Pregnant’d.

A Capitol Controversy

The label may have earned some kiddie-cred by snatching up Lily, but Capitol Records is a house in disarray today. Page Six reports that “disgruntled staffers have fired off a scathing letter to the label’s parent, EMI, charging that Capitol president and CEO Andy Slater is a lackluster leader who’s destroying the company with a roster of sub-par acts and should be axed.” The anonymous message laments Capitol’s fall from the “cutting edge” in the ’90s to is present state, where it’s involved with acts “clearly a step behind what is happening in music.” And what band did the letter identify as “going nowhere”? New York City’s own Morningwood!

The “dozens of Capitol employees” the letter represents are pissed about Slater ignoring core acts like Bonnie Raitt (so awesome she is) and Roseanne Cash. The story’s source threw a little haterade on, too, saying that Slater’s often unreachable ’cause “he’s out at night at clubs and partying with girls.” The selfish bastard.
