New Oh Astro Video – “Hello Fuji Boy”

In the spirit of Stereogum being your #1 source for documentation of Lionel Richie appropriation, last year we turned our attention to the spliced genius of Oh Astro’s “Hello Fuji Boy” (“Hello” + Fujiya & Miyagi’s “Ankle Injuries” + Hot Chip’s “Boy From School”). And in the spirit of Oh Astro being top-flight cut-and-paste media surgeons, the track’s video stitches and stutters scenes from Sid and Mary Krofft’s ’70s kids show The Lost Saucer. There were probably about as many permissions filed for the video footage as there were for the track itself, but it wouldn’t be Illegal Art any other way.

The Field’s “A Paw In My Face” wasn’t the only track last year to appropriate Lionel Richie’s “Hello” for new and dance-oriented ends. Oh Astro, from the sample-loving stable of Illegal Art, took Lionel’s then, we love it now:

Champions Of Wonder, the full-length the Hot Chip/Richie & Miyagi track hails from, is a good listen all the way, the recontextualized samples never feeling forced, always creating something new. That said, we’re not gonna lie: Playing CSI: Beat Detective with the tracks is much fun. Now the married folk behind the music (Jane Dowe and Hank Hofler) are offering up the family recipe to their confections. First, a few more morsels:

The sample happy Illegal Art roster recently made a four-song sampler available for the price of free online, featuring the likes of patron saint Girl Talk, Realistic, and Steinski. Good stuff and worth your bandwith all around, but it’s Oh Astro that’s taking top honors in the Stereogum office this AM. Track’s called “Hello Fuji Boy,” and it’s a sweet mash of Lionel Richie’s “Hello,” Hot Chip’s “Boy From School,” and we’ll leave you in suspense on the third (hint: “Fuji”).
