Papercuts – “Life Among The Savages” (Stereogum Premiere)

Last month Papercuts graced us with “Still Knocking At The Door,” our first preview of their first album in three years. Now here’s our second Life Among The Savages selection, and it’s a gas. The album’s title track is just as much of a luscious swoon as the single that preceded it, with orchestral flourishe… More »

Papercuts – “Still Knocking At The Door”

It has been several years since we first heard Jason Quever’s last album as Papercuts, Fading Parade, but he’s back with a new album and label. Life Among The Savages will be out on Easy Sound Recording Co. and today we’ve got the first single, “Still Knocking At The Door.” It’s an elegant piece of… More »

Stereogum Monthly Mix: January & February 2011

After a holiday break and an inclemently weathered January, our Monthly Mix series returns with a two-month/one-mix compilation that sets a defiant tone. If not for the year, then for the persistently re-accumulating, gut-checking frost. The key elements (aside from recency and excellence) are electronics and sequence, with a late-mix flip to stringed instruments, before… More »

Papercuts – “Do What You Will” (Stereogum Premiere)

Jason Quever has a way with shadows. It’s like everything he does is partially submerged in darkness. His press photos are often out of focus. In his songs, his voice drifts — occasionally hides — within the psychedelic dream pop’s downcast haze. That feel continues on his Papercuts’s fourth album Fading Parade via its nighttime… More »

Girls/Cass McCombs/Papercuts @ Great American Music Hall, San Francisco 9/9/09

San Fran’s Great American Music Hall hosted a great bill the other night featuring hometown heroes and future Behind The Music candidates Girls, fellow local indie-pop champs Papercuts, and the always excellent Cass McCombs. We sent Paige Parsons to capture the night in pictures because overnight flights to SF were too expensive. Here’s what Girl… More »

New Papercuts Video – “Future Primitive”

When we posted “Future Primitive” from Papercuts’ great You Can Have What You Want, Brandon noted the “hazy weight” to the track’s pop, and how well it paired with the out-of-focus press shot Jason Quever had attached. The haze and weight are doubled for the song’s video, which sees Jason trekking through the desert (primitive)… More »

Papercuts – “You Can Have What You Want”

Papercut Jason Quever does a great job with the shadowy psych-pop track “Future Primitive“(which we’ve also heard in remixed form via Ruby Suns). He doesn’t sound much chirpier on the forthcoming You Can Have What You Want title track, but this sort of downcast haziness showcases his voice best. And, yeah, he’s saying “can” not… More »

The ‘Gum Drop LXXX: Hear Ruby Suns’ Papercuts Remix, Win Worn Free Tees

When we posted the Papercuts’ “Future Primitive,” we noted that Jason Quever’s classic sounding voice was a highlight of the dreamy, psychedelic You Can Have What You Want standout. While still clearly pop, there’s a hazy weight to it. There’s more haze plus a crystallized thump and shuffle on this danceable remix by Ryan McPhu… More »

New Papercuts – “Future Primitive”

Papercut Jason Quever’s voice surprised me on “Future Primitive,” a dreamy, psychedelic track from his forthcoming You Can Have What You Want. I’m familiar with, and have listened to, the San Francisco’s songwriter’s Mockingbird and Can’t Go Back, but this is more classic and dusty seeming that I remembered. While still clearly pop, there’s a… More »

Love Bites: Stereogum’s Anti-Valentine’s Day Mix

Valentine’s Day is one of those holidays you might not pay too much attention to if you’re in the midst of a really good relationship — because every day is like Valentine’s Day! — but can gain importance in direct ratio to how shitty your love life is when February 14th rolls around. With that… More »

Stereogum Does CMJ: Speck Mountain/Le Loup/Papercuts/Bowerbirds @ Knitting Factory, NYC 10/18/07 (Force Field/Aero Showcase)

On a night that didn’t really offer much by way of new-band-discovery options, ForceFieldPR and Aero Booking represented with the best bill of bands we liked but had yet to see live: Band To Watch Speck Mountain, Band To Watch Le Loup, San Fran pop project Papercuts (aka Jason Quever), and the mighty… More »
