SXSW: Pete Townshend W/ The Fratellis @ Stubb’s

Stereogum street team Pete Townshend and Rachel Fuller brought their “Attic Jams” to La Zona Rosa last night, wowing with Who classics “Drowned” and “I Can’t Reach You,” a tune Townshend claimed he had never before played in public. Keynote Pete also duetted with Joe Purdy on “Let My Love Open The Door.”

The worst kept secret of the week was the Who axeman’s rumored cameo with NME buzz boys The Fratellis at today’s SPIN showcase at Stubb’s. Our man Jon Bahr was on hand with his fancy SLR, and delivered these great shots of “The Seeker.” We hoped to bring you our SouthBy coverage chronologically, but these were too good to sit on, so log on later for our Thursday recap.

Roger Daltrey’s Secret Sauce

The 62-year-old rocker did an interview with Virgin radio, playing a proselytizing Ponce De Leon, cluing fans in to his secret fountain of youth. Via Uncut:

Daltrey says that he likes to drink tea made from yeast and Kombucha ? that?s bacteria that resembles a mushroom, discovered in China 2000 years ago during the Qin Dynasty. It was originally thought to help the user to gain immortality.

He claims tea has helped him cope with The Who?s worldwide touring commitments. He told listeners: “It’s things like Kombucha ? and anything to keep you going. The shows are easy, it’s the schlepping that gets hard.”

That’s not the first time we’ve been told to drink Kombucha. Ever tried it? It tastes like rotten pickles in Tabasco sauce. But hey, if it lets us sing “Won’t Get Fooled Again” into our sixties, we’re for it (even if Blender said last year’s Endless Wire sounded like “a concept that’s been stewing too long and a singer who’s one scream away from a hernia”). Our friend Pete may think you should save your money, but as long as Roger’s sipping that yeast, you better bet The Who will rock, pure and easy (double song-reference score!).

Our friends Rachel and Pete of the web-based TV programme In The Attic and umm, The Who, would like to tell ya about the new project they’re working on called Attic Jam — after which The Raconteurs pop in for some Who cover love. Enjoy.

Jack you slacker, how do you not know the bridge to “The Seeker”?! Next time we forget the chords to a Who song we want Pete to guide us, too. Anyway, that’s the version of the tune that you’ll hear on the Attic Jam compilation about which Pete and Rachel were speaking. Of course we pretty much demanded that MP3, and thought you might want it as well:
