Public Image Ltd. – “One Drop”

Back in 2009, John Lydon started touring with a reconstituted version of his legendary postpunk group Public Image Ltd. And on 4/21, Record Store Day, they’ll return with a new vinyl EP, their first new studio material since 1992. Below, listen to a radio rip of the new track “One Drop,” which does a pretty good job simulating the fearsome reggae-inflicted sound of PiL’s older records.

The last time PiL performed on US television it was 1992 and they did That What Is Not‘s “Covered” on The Dennis Miller Show. This time, at Jimmy Kimmel with their reunion tour looming, they dug deeper into the oeuvre and offered a familiar classic, 1986′s “Rise,” from an Album Girls like.

We all got the word about the PiL reunion a few months back, but the band — John Lydon with former bandmates Lu Edmonds and Bruce Smith plus new guy Scott Firth — hit the stage for the first time last night at Birmingham O2, the first of five UK shows this month. In interviews Lydon’s said — really — that those Country Life butter advertisements he did funded the reunion prior to the check for last night’s show. As far as I can tell, though, he doesn’t plug the product from the stage. Speaking of which, we did find some video from the evening. The guys sound good.

Former bandmates Lu Edmonds and Bruce Smith (not original members Jah Wobble and Keith Levene) plus new addition Scott Firth will join the Sex Pistol for five UK gigs this December. It’ll be Public Image Ltd’s first tour in 17 years. Details at pilofficial.com.

We pulled this together just in time for your lunch break. Make it a long one. In memory of Tom Snyder, who passed yesterday at the age of 71.

From 1973-1982, the coveted post-Carson slot on NBC belonged to the legendary Snyder and his The Tomorrow Show, an off-kilter interview program featuring Tom’s awesome eyebrows and some hard-hitting, confrontational Q&A. He also had a knack for booking rock icons in their heyday — and for some reason, things tended to get loopy. (Probably ’cause he was booking rock icons. In their heyday.) Take this 1980 interview with Public Image Ltd.’s John Lydon (a.k.a. Johnny Rotten) and Keith Levene, in which Tom and John engage in a battle of contempt and pave the way for Smoosh, the lovable band from Mr. Show‘s VTV sketch.
