When MGMT released Ray Tintori’s trippy vid for Oracular Spectacular‘s inescapable monster jam, it seemingly terrified one child, certainly terrified three seniors, and essentially polarized everyone old enough (but not too old) to know what the internet is. You either loved the visuals and the uncredited Joanna Newsom cameo and voted it as the #9 Best Music Video in last year’s Gummys, or, you hated seeing a scared shitless child and Nietzche’s quote credited to Mark Twain and didn’t notice/couldn’t care less about Joanna Newsom (in which case, yesterday’s news that the Noose…um has a new album out 2/23 should be ignored).

Well both camps might have some fun watching this nine-and-a-half minute behind the scenes of the “Kids” video, during which we get to hang out with director Tintori, meet animator Christy Karacas (Superjail), and hear MGMT say two words. Of course, the greatest moment of interest is HOW DID THEY MAKE THE BABY CRY?, and I anticipate some lively discussion about that in the comments. Whatever your position, you’ll agree Baby Zachary is super cute, and may just be the new Nirvana Nevermind baby (in which case we’ll be asking him to give it a rest in 17 years), and we get some choice moments with the method actress playing Baby Zachary’s mom. Looks like Joanna picked up some tips from her boyfriend.

Between movie trailers and French presidential campaigns and your mom’s iPod, “Kids” was pretty inescapable in 2008. And while Ray Tintori’s just-released video for the Oracular Spectacular standout doesn’t look like it would’ve taken eight months to complete, trippy things come to those who wait. We’re basically getting three clips in one, starting with scenes of monsters terrifying a child, then a televised puppet show, and as the final segment a psychedelic cartoon. The band appears briefly in silver garb and facepaint (obvs). MGMT promise no children were harmed in the making of this video. I think the kid’s therapist will have to confirm that in twenty years.

A great song deserves a great video. Chairlift’s Knife-inspired dance cut “Evident Utensil” satisfies its end of the equation, and director Ray Tintori’s visual mind-fuckery here more than does its part: The Brooklyn-via-Denver trio walk through fields and paint-splattered sets, the film freezes and swirls, and the band re-emerges with facial features built from those previously paused pixels. I know that description doesn’t make any sense. Yet. Less complaining more watching:

Director Ray Tintori, who produced psychedelic other-worldly landscapes for MGMT, got an even bigger budget for the Killers’ new clip and he spent it all on costumes. They are crazy costumes, though. At the center of the Bowie-esque tale of alien abduction is Brandon Flowers in a bright red bodysuit with red football pads and plumage (natch). He’s the most subtly outfitted of all the humans and dancers attending the feast on skull tower.

Well now the imagery on the Oracular Spectacular cover that prompted Letterman to remark what a “good time that looks like” at the top of the show makes sense. Cue up the psychedelic colors and return to paradise setting as MGMT strip themselves of this world’s structure and start anew, Lord Of The Flies-meets-”Gronlandic Edit” style. They’re riding cats and worshiping temples and having babies, marking the second time in a little over a month they’ve helped create a new scene. We should’ve known by the vowel omissions they’d were busy dudes.
