Best Coast – “Fear Of My Own Identity”

This year Record Store Day fell on 4/20, so it was only appropriate that the powered-by-weed outfit Best Coast stepped up to the plate to issue a 7″ platter. Even better, though, is how deep Beth went with the track titles for this high holiday, both sides nailing a classic dimension of stoner existential paranoia:… More »

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – “Animal X”

A new 7″ single from Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds was part of this past weekend’s Record Store Day deluge. “Animal X,” apparently named after an Australian nature documentary series from the ’90s, came from the same sessions that produced the band’s triumphant new album Push The Sky Away. The song is a bit… More »

And now they’ve made a 48-second promo video for that cassingle. It’s a psychedelic stop-motion-animated clip that stars the cassingle itself, as well as an interstellar sock puppet. More »

The 10 Most Anticipated Record Store Day 2013 Releases

It’s that time of the year again, everybody! The best holiday of the year (yes, better than National Ferris Wheel Day AND Leif Erikson Day) has returned. I’ve been going to Record Store Day since 2009, and even when I didn’t look up the releases beforehand, I’d still walk out of my favorite record store… More »

Dan Deacon – “Konono Ripoff No. 1″

For a new Record Store Day 7″ single, the euphoric Baltimore experimentalist Dan Deacon has recorded a new song that borrows its tones and its sense of melodics from the Congolese band Konono No. 1, so he’s naturally called it “Konono Ripoff No. 1.” Deacon’s recorded two versions of the track, with two different drummer… More »

Walla – “Never Give Up” & Sombear – “Incredibly Still” (Stereogum Premiere)

Today’s been a bit of a big news day for Death Cab For Cutie-related vinyl. Earlier, it was noted that the long-awaited Death Cab The Barsuk Years boxset, which was originally slated for release in January, was finally making its shipping rounds, but that more than half of the records were mislabeled. A listener throw… More »

Ty Segall – “The Motivator” (T. Rex Cover)

The Black Lips aren’t the only garage-punks whose Record Store Day cover of a classic ’70s song is streaming online today. Three years ago, San Franciscan savant Ty Segall released Ty Rex, a Record Store Day EP of T. Rex covers. This year, he goes back to the well for Ty Rex 2, a second… More »

The Black Lips – “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys” (Waylon Jennings/Willie Nelson Cover)

Outlaw-country gods and longtime buddies Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson recorded a veritable shit-ton of songs together, but their most famous is probably the lightweight 1975 shuffle “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys.” Lately, Willie Nelson has been flipping the chorus around in concert, changing it to “Mammas Don’t Let Your… More »

Record Store Day has become an annual tradition over the past few years (or, if you include their Black Friday specials, a semi-annual tradition). This year, it falls on 4/20, which means countless consumers will have to make the heartbreaking choice between weed and vinyl. But if it makes that decision any easier, the Record… More »

Jack White Named Ambassador Of Record Store Day 2013

Yesterday, I was walking through the Brooklyn neighborhood to which I moved not three weeks ago, when I fell upon an indie video store that had just that day announced a going-out-of-business clearance sale. After seven years, the store was closing for good, finally worn down by the likes of Netflix and torrent communities and… More »

Listen To Boris And Asobi Seksu Cover One Another

Record Store Day Black Friday is going to bring with it a ton of cool shit but the Boris/Asobi Seksu split 7″ has to be one of the standouts. On the A-side, NYC shoegazers Asobi Seksu do a softened, brightened cover of “Farewell,” from Boris’s breakthrough 2005 LP, Pink. On the flip, the Japanese metal… More »

Oberhofer Cover Kanye West’s “Runaway”

As a loose online bonus, the Brooklyn-via-Tacoma indie band Oberhofer have dropped their cover of Kanye West’s douchebag anthem “Runaway,” a song that translates surprisingly seamlessly to a spacey-indie context. It probably helps that nobody attempts Pusha T’s verse. Download the Oberhofer version below. More »

Bonnie “Prince” Billy Gets A Condom

I’m not sure I’ve ever been in a situation where a Will Oldham-themed condom has been called for, but people have all sorts of preferences, and now one of them is being served. A Wolfroy Goes To Town-themed rubber was one of the weirder items out there on Record Store Day, and now you ca… More »
