Santigold – “Radio”

What happened to Santi White? Ever since Santigold swapped out the “o” from her name, she’s been in descent. Her sophomore album, Master Of My Make Believe, never went anywhere, partly because of some major label messiness, but mostly because it was largely forgettable. In the years since, she’s been treading water with a serie… More »

Watch Sharon Jones, Alexis Krauss, Santigold, Amanda Palmer, & More Cover Talking Heads Songs For David Byrne Tribute Concert

No matter his level of recognition, David Byrne is forever a guy about town. I’ve brushed past him in the East Village, seen him ride a bike by the Williamsburg Bridge, and the night before flying to Austin for SXSW, I ended up eating dinner next to him at an unassuming Caribbean restaurant. It’s fitting,… More »

Santigold – “Kicking Down Doors”

We don’t get new Santigold songs frequently enough, so maybe if it takes Pepsi money to make a new one happen, that’s a psychic price we’ll have to pay. Pepsi is, of course, going all-in on marketing for the World Cup, and its efforts include Janelle Monáe’s cover of David Bowie’s “Heroes.” But that’s just… More »

Stream The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Soundtrack

As we noted earlier, the Hunger Games film series has taken over for Twilight not only as the default literary/cinematic obsession for brooding teeny-boppers but as the pipeline for connecting those fans with something resembling alternative music. Whereas the vampires stared longingly to the sounds of Thom Yorke and Bon Iver, the soundtrack for TheMore »

Watch Santigold Play A Time-Traveling Secret Agent Prostitute On NTSF: SD: SUV::

Earlier this year, Santigold played herself on one of the final episodes of The Office. And now she’s got another notch on her comedy-acting resume, appearing on last night’s episode of the Adult Swim cop-procedural parody NTSF: SD: SUV::. This episode of the show had only a couple of the regular stars, and instead it… More »

Vampire Weekend – “Diane Young” Video

Vampire Weekend already got plenty of attention for “Diane Young,” the frantic first single from their truly great new album Modern Vampires Of The City, when they burned a couple of Saabs in the lyric video. And now they’ve made a proper video for the song, setting it at an anarchic dinner party and filling… More »

Watch Santigold On The Office

Next week is the series finale of NBC’s long running remake of Ricky Gervais’s UK classic The Office, and last night the showrunners finally addressed a serious weakness of the show during its full nine-year run: Not enough Santigold. Finally! Just kidding how beautifully random. Although, Santi’s appearance does come with some internal logic: Ed… More »

The 5 Best Videos Of The Week

I can’t imagine any of the artists on this week’s list had huge budgets to play around. Even Santigold, the one who could’ve presumably commanded a small pile of money to make a video, ended up doing something quick and homemade instead. So consider these to be five ways to stretch dollars while actually making… More »

Santigold – “Girls” Video

HBO’s Girls had a huge night last night. Its second season debuted with a pretty great episode. And over on another channel, it also won the Golden Globe for Best TV Show – Comedy, and creator/showrunner/star Lena Dunham took home Best TV Actress – Comedy or Musical, beating out hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Santigold – “Girls”

When Santigold contributed a new joint to the soundtrack of the HBO show Girls, she called the song, naturally enough, “Girls.” The song will show up on a collection of music from the show, due out next month, and it’s a quick little synth jam built on voice samples, and it features the closest thing… More »

Santigold Brings “Disparate Youth” To Jimmy Fallon

Here is Santi White, ambitiously asking Jimmy Fallon’s studio audience to clap in time to her reggae-inflected new wave “Disparate Youth” last night on his late night variety show. They did alright eventually (after making her titter with how bad they were doing initially)! “Disparate” is a balmy, Squeeze-y standout from Santigold’s long awaited MasterMore »

Santigold Covers “Proud Mary”

Santigold has always been a gifted singer in her own right, but she’s not exactly a belter. Credit Santi White, then, with massive chutzpah for recording her own version of “Proud Mary,” a Creedence Clearwater Revival classic most famously sung by Tina Turner. The Santigold version, recorded for a future BBC Radio session, wisely doesn’t… More »

When you spend your first few listens to a new album trying to decide whether you’re disappointed or not, that’s not exactly a good sign.
