Austin City Limits hosted some of the nicest weather in years alongside an impressive line up with main headliners The Strokes, Muse and the Eagles. Some tough scheduling choices though needed to be made like choosing Sonic Youth or Vampire Weekend, Broken Bells or Silversun Pickups, Band Of Horses or the Flaming Lips, and Muse or M.I.A. ACL typically sells out every year and they have already announced that September 16-18 will be the dates for next year. Until then, here’s spread of photos to fill you in on some of how it looked this year.

Expanding on Yo La Tengo’s approach to covering Matador bands while reading the lyrics off a sheet of paper in front of you, Spoon gave a go at the late Jay Reatard‘s “No Time” while performing at Oak Ridge Park in Clark, New Jersey. Even if you’re not a fan (I’m not) you gotta give Green Day credit, first for introducing Lookout! to mall-punks back in the day, later for showcasing political awareness on an MTV-sized scale. Now middle-aged dads, with armfuls of Grammys and a Broadway pedigree, they commanded the biggest crowd at Lolla so far this weekend. Some young fans were even plucked by Billie Joe to join them onstage (the trio’s Stones/Beatles medley was presumably a gift to their parents). Of course, much more happened Saturday (I’d implore you to follow us on Twitter, but (SURPRISE) AT&T is not cooperating), so Amrit and I will wrap a deeper Saturday and Sunday recap into a single post tomorrow. While in town to play MSG with Arcade Fire, Spoon stopped by Jimmy Fallon and did Transference‘s “Nobody Gets Me But You” with an understated but effective Questlove assist. Afterward, Questo hightails it to his usual throne while the band stand around scratching their heads.

Jesus Lizard put on great shows in the ’90s. Just as intense, albeit in a different way, were Guided By Voices’ acrobatic karate-kicking, beer-swilling collagist epics. It’s unclear if Robert Pollard & Co. will have as much energy in 2010 (he will), but regardless, the “classic” ’93-’96 lineup’s getting back together in Las Vegas for Matador’s 21st Anniversary Party in October. The event takes place 10/1-10/3 and also includes past and present Matador heroes like Pavement, Sonic Youth, Belle & Sebastian, Cat Power, Yo La Tengo, Spoon, the John Spencer Blues Explosion, Girls, the New Pornographers, Cold Cave, Kurt Vile, Fucked Up, etc. You can read, so take a look at the flyer for the event while you check out some additional details.

The shows will take place at the Palms Casino & Resort in Vegas. You’ll be able to find out how to get tickets on 7/5. Keep watch at Matablog while listening to Alien Lanes and Bee Thousand on repeat.

Last week was a good week for Arcade Fire fans: You heard new sounds, saw new cover art, and got a letter from Arkady Fireovitch. Continuing The Suburbs‘ roll out, the band has announced its first U.S. headlining tour since 2007′s Neon Bible trek. Spoon will open the New York, Philadelphia, D.C., and Atlanta dates. Friday got us dancing with LCD and Jay-Z, Saturday featured less clothing, and Sunday closed things out with a generally mellower lineup (plus more amazing weather). It was fitting the reunited Pavement played “In The Mouth A Desert.” Because the desert is where people were watching them. Even if it didn’t feel especially arid. Less great? The crowd they drew was sparse. Sparser than last year’s loveless gathering for MBV. (Another “influential” band who won’t sell out MSG.) Regardless, the faithful were present and Malkmus & Co. opened with “Silence Kit,” did “In The Mouth,” an moved forward to “Stereo” and “Frontwards” and onward. It wasn’t as long a set list as the band’s pre-Coachella warmup in Pomona — still, plenty of jams. As far as folks from the ’90s who don’t have to worry about packing a place, Thom Yorke/Atoms For Peace‘s set was excellent: You don’t know how much The Eraser is missing Flea until you hear Thom performing The Eraser with Flea. (Yorke dedicated “Atoms for Peace” to Pavement, which is basically dedicating your band to another band, right?) After Thom and his Atoms worked through The Eraser, he returned with a solo “Airbag” (on guitar) and “Everything In Its Right Place” (on piano), then brought the band out for “some mad shit.” (Speaking of mad shit, what’s up with Sly and his extended delay/on-stage lawsuit tirade?) (A: Sly was just being Sly.) Another big finale set came via Gorillaz, who had a pre-recorded Snoop Dogg as well as real-life De La Soul, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon, and Bobby Womack to help them bring their Plastic Beach to Indio. They also had strings and gay sailors. There was actually tons of this kind of cross-pollination and guesting: Justice did a set as part of Club 75, at the Sahara tent, Spoon brought Bradford Cox out again, etc … Sadly, though, no Beck for Charlotte Gainsbourg. Otherwise, regrets were few. As these photos — taken by lenses abler than ours — illustrate.

Last night, Late Night vets Spoon delivered two Transference tracks to Jimmy Kimmel. Their recent tourmate Bradford Cox sat in on guitar (and guest smiles) for “Who Makes Your Money,” but exited the stage for the “Is Love Forever?” web exclusive. (After the taping, Britt and Bradford made their way to Pomona for Pavement — post TK.) The lineup shift gives you the opportunity to compare Britt Daniel’s guitar-holding vs. guitar-free vocals. That, and Daniel loses one back to lean on.

You already saw shots from Spoon and Deerhunter’s DC show, but Radio City Music Hall is a tour stop worth documenting. To that end, Dan Harris noted that Britt Daniel’s parents were beaming and taking photos of their son during their set. Photographer Natasha Ryan also took pictures of their son, as well as openers Deerhunter and the Strange Boys, who’ve both been part of Spoon’s current tour. Spoon brought out a horn section to enlarge some songs, because RCMH’s 6,000-seat auditorium can sometimes dwarf some performers. Eleanor Friedberger, Dan Boeckner, and White Rabbits’s Stephen Patterson came up to do songs with the band, who paid them back by assisting on some of theirs. Boeckner and Spoon did Wolf Parade’s “Modern World.” Yes there’s video:
