This week Santigold played a pair of sold-out shows at Music Hall Of Williamsburg as a way of trumpeting her long-awaited return to the fore. The sets were immaculate and theatrical, smart and silly, and full of the sort of dancehall and dancesteps that’d make Skerrit Bwoy go dagger-up. Directly on their back comes “Big Mouth,” and its video starring Santi and her S1W-ettes, the first single from Master Of My Make-Believe and the first listen of what just became a staple at sceney DJ nights for Q1 ’12. Hole gave it a good spin, and that was nice and all, but this video confirms Ssion’s as the gayest and greatest cover of Young Marble Giants ever. Ssion man Cody Critcheloe first shared his take on “Credit In The Straight World” alongside that intense, Lynchian clip for “A Wolves Eye.” The concept bar is lower than that outing — mostly just Cody enjoying a refreshing beverage, winking like Palin, twirling in front of a projector — but the slinks and winks put to the the strobes and sleazy beats is pretty much pure yes.

A slab of Ssion is always a great way to the end the day, so let’s get into it. Ssion man Cody Critcheloe remains busy: He took a director’s credit on Tilly & The Wall’s Beat Control,” gave his mom a punk makeover in “Ah-Ma,” and later hit us with the trashy radness of “Day Job.” And yet none of that prepared me for Cody’s latest directorial effort, this time for Fools Gold track “A Wolves Eye,” which he describes as “David Lynch-meets-Jean Paul Gaultier with a little big of Gregg Araki and the scent of Jean Paul Gaultier (that’s the cologne I wear).” Incredibly, after watching it that all makes sense! The video is set to a version of the song that’s slowed, compliments of J.A.M., which makes for icy synths and dark beats that fit the fireside ritualism and druid sleaze sorta perfectly. I wouldn’t say this is NSFW, but we posted it late because, maybe you’ll just get less questions if you watch it from home.

It wasn’t too long ago that stylishly mustached and beauty-marked Ssion frontman Cody Critcheloe was giving his cross-dressing mom a punk makeover (face licking, powder, lots of booze) in “Ah-Ma.” No sign of the lovely lady this time out. Instead, Critcheloe’s hanging with his rocker pals in a wooded Missouri area, braving technical difficulties, Marshall stacks, bleary subtitles, Gummo overtones, an American Volkswagen, police tape, and the ol’ 9-5 to bring us the amusingly endless trash anthem, “Day Job.”

We last heard from the Glass Candy remixing Ssion frontman Cody Critcheloe when he directed Tilly & The Wall’s “Beat Control” video with fellow Kansas City crew member Drew Bolton. Here, Critcheloe’s a taunting, whiskey-downing, sleazy-ass hairdresser, getting crazy with the developer and Saran Wrap on his cross-dressing mama. As the YouTube description puts it, “Cody’s mom gets a punk makeover.” She also gets her face licked. Cool that CC and his moms have such a close relationship.

In the past when we talk Italo-disco, we’re usually in the realm of Sally Shapiro … though she’s from Sweden. Ssion’s from Kansas City, and therefore not really any closer, but frontman Cody Critcheloe’s mustache looks pretty authentic. Plus, this remix Glass Candy do of Ssion’s “Clowns” has that icy hot dance feel we dig most about the After Dark realm (right, Italians Do It Better’s in Jersey City).
