Back in the day, when two artists didn’t like each other, they’d deal with it in relatively low-profile ways: A snippy backstage comment, or a pointed interview comment. Maybe they’d toss in a lyrical jab, the way Lynyrd Skynyrd did toward Neil Young on “Sweet Home Alabama,” but that would be just about it. That’s all changed. If, say, the Kurt Cobain/Axl Rose VMA-backstage kerfuffle had happened today, the resounding Twitterpocalypse would have the over-capacity whale showing up for three solid days whenever you tried to reload the site. And every time an artist is even vaguely annoyed at something another artist says or does, they seem to get on their blackberries to air it out. Impulse control, after all, is a tough thing to master when you’ve got a computer sitting in front of you and a few hundred thousand followers eager to soak up whatever you might give them. Meanwhile, sites like ours live for these instantaneous bursts of conflict because, honestly, who doesn’t love reading about this stuff? So here we are: The unranked list of 2011′s biggest, dumbest, best inter-band squabbles.

Last month Tegan and Sara released Get Along — a career-spanning live album that also includes three short documentary films on the band. Not only is the album a potent reminder of just how much of a polished live act Tegan and Sara have become, it’s a nice feather in the cap for a band that has been recording and touring for well over a decade. I had the chance a couple of weeks ago to talk with Sara Quin about what happens next for the band as they prepare to head back into the studio. Having interviewed the band before, I was none too surprised that this interview turned out to be both super easy and super engaging … as well as incredibly long.

Tegan & Sara’s Get Along is a DVD/live album bundle that includes three films — States, India, and For The Most Part — and a live LP recorded during a performance in Vancouver. Each film examines an aspect of Tegan & Sara’s career, which includes a look into their early days traveling the US, their tour in India, as well as documenting Tegan & Sara’s live show. Today we have a glimpse of the latter film, a pretty straightforward concert doc shot at Warehouse Studios in Vancouver. Check out “Back In Your Head” after the jump.

Tegan & Sara @ Newport Folk Festival 7/30/11

Tegan & Sara made their Newport Folk Festival debut over the weekend. “We made it to Newport!! What a lovely and quaint little place!” Tegan blogged upon arrival. “Rhode Island is adorable and reminds me a lot of the East Coast of Canada.” The acoustic performance was the duo’s only scheduled US gig this year. Kathleen Hanna’s in the midst of Renaissance sparked by NYU’s Fales Library purchasing her archive/papers, Sara Marcus’s Girls to the Front: The True Story of the Riot Grrrl Revolution documenting the olden days, and the Le Tigre tour DVD Who Took the Bomp? documenting the slightly more recent days, and etc. The DVD’s why Spinner sat down with the Bikini Kill/Julie Ruin/Le Tigre icon for a Q&A. While Earl aka Thebe weathers the Odd Future hypestorm from a safe, voluntary distance, Tyler, The Creator sits in its epicenter. He’s a clever boy just out of his teens whose anti-everything rhetorical baseline is kindling to the adolescent id, who has released a knotty LP Goblin that is kindling to sharp think piece writers and Twitter hashtag enthusiasts. The Daily‘s called the record “a test with no correct answer, a Rorschach blot that refuses to resolve”; @1000TimesYes characterized the album’s voice as saying “Yes I am, no I’m not. Yes I am, no I’m not. Yes I am, no I’m not.” For some the hatred, misogyny, and homophobia’s rampant excess transforms Tyler into something of a piss-taking caricature artist; for others, the vivid, insistent, repellent nature of his lyrical fantasies are inexcusable, by definition, and here, by execution. The discussion is tense, fascinating, exhausting. Tegan & Sara recently took to their site to offer some thoughts from outside the critical discourse, criticizing the discourse itself, expressing disappointment with the discussion and the treatment of his homophobic language. Hear Tegan And Sara Cover “The Chipmunk Song”

A couple of years ago, in a clip about the “How To” With Q guitar series, Sara Quin suggested that in order to play her “Walking With A Ghost” properly, you should make your voice sound “a bit like a Chipmunk and a bit like Cindy Lauper.” So, that in mind, her and her sister’s cover of Alvin And The Chipmunks’ perennial Holiday favorite “The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late)” shouldn’t be all that surprising. (Jars Of Clay’s take = more of a curve ball.) T & S’s version shows up on the 21-song compilation Gift Wrapped II: Snowed In.

Bad Religion’s been around for 30 years, which means they’re older than your Facebook. To honor the Southern California punks, MySpace and SPIN have joined “forces” to present Germs of Perfection: A Tribute to Bad Religion. The first song they’re offering is the Quin’s take on the 1998 fight song “Suffer,” the title track from Greg Graffin & Co.’s third collection.
