The Hives Apologize For Dedicating Song “About Stuff Blowing Up” To Boston

Swedish garage-rockers the Hives are no strangers to lapses in taste; they did, after all, make this. But as Boston’s CBS Local reports, they went a bit far last night, when they opened for Pink at Boston’s TD Garden. Here’s a bit of stage patter from singer Pelle Almqvist: “This song’s for everyone in Boston. More »

Hives Ordered To Pay Cardigans $3MM

BBC has reported that the Hives have been ordered to pay the Cardigans 18.5MM kroner, which is roughly 3MM America dollars via a loan the Hives claim to have no idea they were taking. The legal kerfuffle was generated by Malmo, Sweden recording facility Tambourine Studios, manager of both bands’ finances, which were frequently moved… More »

The Hives, FIDLAR, Luis And The Wildfires @ Observatory, Santa Ana 9/11/12

Prior to their appearance on the Conan, the Hives made a stop at the Observatory in Santa Ana in support of their latest release, Lex Hives. It was a fast and furious seventeen song set augmented by plenty of classic boasts by Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist. Los Angeles based beer-soaked punks FIDLAR impressed with a rambunctiou… More »

The Hives – “Go Right Ahead” Video (Stereogum Premiere)

The concept for the Hives’ new clip is a representative in-studio take, borne of a desire to create something “more realistic than most ‘rock videos.'” So, here’s their performance of their latest single “Go Right Ahead,” recorded in the brand new studio Benny Andersson (ABBA) built in Stockholm. The Hives were his first clients. Watch… More »

The Hives – “Go Right Ahead”

Swedish garage-rock peacocks the Hives had their big moment in the sun a decade ago, but they’re still out there, playing shows and releasing music and sounding just as feral as they did back in the Return Of The Rock days. Their new self-produced album Lex Hives is coming out 6/5 on the band’s ow… More »

Wireless Festival 2011 In Photos

A weird but interesting mix of performers at this year’s Wireless Festival in London’s Hyde Park: Battles, Bruno Mars, Yuck, Black Eyed Peas, Rocky Erickson, Tinie Tempah, Ke$ha, the Hives, Janelle Monae, Grace Jones, the Chemical Brothers, and the Horrors all performed, and those were just the bands that didn’t include any cast members of… More »

New Hives & Cyndi Lauper – “A Christmas Duel”

When we joked about the Hives having one fan left, we were proven wrong: They have at least a dozen. (Just kidding, Hives fan.) Cyndi Lauper is apparently fond of the Swedish garage crew — she’s teams up with them for a “Fairytale Of New York“-style “A Christmas Duel.” The Hives explain:

It may… More »

Hives Sued By Remaining Fan

L.A. musician and avowed Hives fan Jason Shapiro has filed a plagiarism suit against the Swedes because he says “Tick Tick Boom”‘s guitar riff sounds too similar to his “Why You?,” which he recorded with the Roofies in 1997 and with Three Way in 2002. He even took the songs to a musicologist for analysis. More »

Sasquatch 2008 In Photos Pt. 2

Our second and final Sasquatch! dispatch comes with fewer bands than Part One, but a deeper look at them. Last time we teased Wayne Coyne’s ability to convince young girls to get on stage and dance naked during his U.F.O. party. This time we actually have some images to back it up. Also on the… More »

Premature Evaluation: The Hives – The Black And White Album

Since we’re on a Swedish kick, figured it made solid sense to Evaluate the new one by the “Hey YA!”-inspiring, Madden-and-Nike approved Hives. The quintet’s fourth album continues the garage revival, surely, but also mixes in more than a few curve balls. Whoever thought we’d bring up Rain Dogs and Pelle Almqvist in the same… More »

New Hives Video – “Tick Tick Boom”

The Hives are getting mad mileage out of new tune “Tick Tick Boom” via a Nike running shoe campaign, but don’t forget that garage riffage is also soundtracking Madden ’08. Good for them, though, it’s a killer comeback single, may as well work it and reintroduce themselves. The video’s got ‘em in their finely tailored… More »

New Hives – “Tick Tick Boom”

No surprise that John “BOOM! He’s on his back” Madden would show interest in a Hives track titled “Tick Tick Boom,” and a cursory listen makes us think it may just be a fit for the opening credits. Howlin’ Pelle’s howlin’ “yeeeeeahhh”s over high-octage grungy garage power chords on this one, which also makes a… More »

New Timbaland Video [Feat. The Hives] – “Throw It On Me”

Last we checked in with Howlin’ Pelle, he detailed the Swedes’ escape from their garages in April, stopping into the studio with the Raconteurs and doing some guest belting on a track for Timbaland. Here’s what Howlin’ Pelle blogged about filming the Timbo video:Shot video for the Timbaland song we are guesting on. It wa… More »

The Hives Lend A Hand To Timbaland, The Raconteurs

April’s been a busy month for Swedish garage rockers the Hives, though Howlin’ Pelle’s recent journal entry offers little info on the band’s forthcoming release (date TBD, title rumored to be the humble The World’s First Perfect Album.) Instead, Almqvist’s screed details the Swedes’ April of interesting cameos. First up, their day with Timbaland:… More »
