It happened last night (4/14) at an after-party at Bar Secreto in Sao Paulo following the final show of the band’s South American tour. According to the NME, Arcade Fire played a surprise concert in Port-Au-Prince on Tuesday night, performing a dozen songs over 45 minutes at the Hotel Oloffson. Arcade Fire’s connections to Haiti have always been strong, but their fund-raising for the country became even more urgent after the country’s January 2010 earthquake.

Their set included covers of songs by Credence Clearwater Revival, the Rolling Stones, Cyndi Lauper, and The Paragons, and ended with “Haiti” and “Wake Up.” According to Rolling Stone the band are in town to help produce a DVD with RAM, a Haitian band lead by the owner of the Hotel Oloffson. For all of your fancy guesswork on our “Who Should Headline Coachella 2011?” post this summer, nobody came up with the apparent top contender for this year’s big paycheck, at least according to Hits Daily Double‘s rumor mill. HDD has “sources,” which I’m told are a thing that used to exist before blogs, that say the Stones are “close to finalizing a deal” with Goldenvoice. Reportedly their fee would be $5MM, which according to my calculations would be $1.5MM more than Macca made for his headlining slot in ’09, and according to my other calculations would be an insane amount of money. Mick’s chicken dance in the desert: enough to get you to pony up for another trek to Indio?

You guys love lists, and we love to start our holiday weekend early, so thanks VH1 for putting together this 100 Greatest Artists Of All Time countdown. (Spoiler Alert: No Wavves…) You should compare it to VH1′s 100 Greatest Artists Of Rock & Roll from 1998 (back when VH1 was VH-1) to see some of the overlaps/differences. For starters: The Top 5 “Rock” vs “Of All Time” is the same group, except for Jimi Hendrix who’s been pushed to No. 6. It’ll also give you an idea of how VH1 defines rock & roll. And how much it sucks to be the Eagles. Trivia: Which artist has drunkenly crashed his car the most times? Highest ranked artist to be pelted with plastic bottles? Did Biggie beat Tupac? Which version of Journey made it? But it’s not all about long-suffering has-beens: I, for one, am happy for Def Leppard.

All week, Jimmy’s been shining a light on the Stones-cold classic Exile On Main St. with cover performances and the occasional awkward satellite patch-in by Keith and Mick. It’s all an extended promotional celebration for the legendary LP’s reissue next week, coming to a heady head last night with Phish’s take on “Loving Cup.” For a lot of phans, “Loving Cup” marked the first (and maybe only) Rolling Stones song they could sing word-for-word — the jamband kingpins have been covering this one live as long as some of you have been alive. (The band’s relationship with the album got that much deeper this past Halloween, when Phish covered the entire album as their traditional “musical costume” out in Indio.) Whatever you think of Phish, they own their bouncy rendition of the song, the same way Trey owns that “And I know a play a bad guitar” line (and the same way he’s owned that “What a beautiful buzz” line, too). And it’s true, dude does.

Although Record Store Day always yields some high-profile goodies, this year the offerings were particularly noteworthy, with a new track from Blur and this “new” track from the Rolling Stones. Context: Next month the Stones re-release their ’72 classic Exile On Main St., re-mastered and stacked with some unheard tracks from the sessions. (Liz Phair, you have some unfinished business.) For RSD, RS gave one of them an early debut: “Plundered My Soul” saw a 7″ release (b/w a re-mastered “All Down The Line”) on 4/17, and given the infamous cabal of drugged-up hangers-on that marked the sessions, Mick’s “I thought you wanted my money but you plundered my soul” seems right, timely, and reflective.

It seems like just seven months ago we were blogging about Pearl Jam playing “Get Some” on the very first Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien. Now the deals have been brokered, the lawyers have been lawyered, and the good times, which is to say the Not Jay Leno times, come to an end. Coco’s last stand as host of his beloved, (misguided) dream job is tonight. He’ll be fine financially: there will be offers, perhaps more fitting for his brand of comedy-your-parents-don’t-like, and NBC is pushing him off the ledge with a $32MM golden parachute (with $12MM for his staff’s severance, and remaining needs will be met by Conan himself). His art, on the other hand, is getting screwed by the ‘Cock: R.I.P. Triumph, and lots of other intellectual property developed by the O’Brien team over the years. But while the Masturbating Bear may have pawed his nuts for the last time, both his theme song and that of the Pimpbot 5000 are apparently safe: Max Weinberg and Jimmy Vivino had the foresight (read: financial sense) to copyright those compositions themselves. Very prescient/greedy! Those guys get it.

Last time Conan had a “final music guest,” it was the White Stripes. This time, it’s Neil Young. Bears relation to the first music artist Conan invited to Universal City: Start on Pearl Jam, end with their progenitor. Full circle-ish. What’ll Neil play? “Tonight’s The Night” sounds about right, but we’ll just see. When that video pops, we’ll add it. For now, enjoy Conan’s attempt to cost NBC as much as possible, by purchasing a Bugatti Veyron (the most expensive car in the world) and showing it while playing the original master recording of the Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” Total cost in car and licensing: $1.5MM. But you know, no hard feelings.

Take our ink-stained hands and join us at the OldStand, where Jon McMillan goes to remind everyone what an honest-to-goodness music magazine is supposed to look like.

Not sure why it took Rolling Stone until March 10th, 1988 to release the results of the 1987 Music Poll when basically all they had to do was take the same batch of index cards they use to choose their covers (Springsteen, R.E.M., U2, David Bowie, any Beatle, something from 1968, male white actor etc.), throw them on the floor, and let David Fricke (“the critic”), and an intern (“the reader”) pick them up in a different order. Which is to say: no surprises here. U2 picks up most of the coveted non-awards, and are rewarded for their trouble with a super-pretentious four-page spread of their heads juxtaposed with U2 lyrics. Oh, and a profile of The Edge (known, at this point in his career, as “the guy who isn’t Bono”).

Here’s a vote: This is the most half-assed “poll” ever. Many of the categories have multiple winners, and the “artists” section is just a list of stuff, with no explanation or qualifications whatsoever (for example, Michael Stipe’s “list” includes the following quote: “I didn’t listen to anything in a year, but I know these came out and are the best. Of what they are. Next year will be Downey Mildew and Hetchy Hetchy. You watch.” Um, thanks big fella. Why don’t you sit the next few plays out?). And how can Belinda Carlisle, of all people, be the only person (critic, fan, artist) to include “Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me”? This whole thing just makes me mad. At least the guys from Crowded House have the good sense to name check “Strangeways Here We Come.”

Elsewhere there’s a huge article about the Rock ‘N’ Roll HOF inductions (a six-page list of names, basically, but some of the pictures are hilarious), a PJ O’Rourke piece about post-Marcos Manila, and Kurt Loder’s four-star review of Robert Plant’s Now And Zen (“Even Jimmy Page, who is a guest guitarist on two of the tracks, flourishes in this hot new context”). Fred Goodman checks in with an insightful report on how the record industry is (was) dealing with the death of vinyl (if you guessed “by charging hubristic prices for CDs,” give yourself a twist of the arm).

Mick flashes back through some of his favorite moments in the video for “Charmed Life”– hugging Bono, playing bass, hugging Sting, chillin’ with Lenny Kravitz, chicken dancing from here to eternity, wearing a pink scarf! The innocuously funky, oddly dub-tinged tune’s one of the previously unreleased songs from the new greatest hits album, The Very Best Of Mick Jagger. Right, if this is the best we’d hate to see the worst, and all that. But note that hippity hop bounce in Mick’s swagger during the “when I walk out my front door” studio shot. Damn, Jagger’s gettin’ jiggy with it!
