The Stone Roses Reunite

The great Manchester psych-rock band the Stone Roses, whose self-titled album is absolutely one that you should have on your iPod, announced a long-rumored, long-denied reunion at a press conference in their hometown today. The band, who broke up acrimoniously in 1996 and who have long denied any possibility of a reunion, will play two shows in Manchester’s Heaton Park next 6/29 and 6/30. If there’s enough demand, the band says they might also play a third show. And given how hungrily people have been hoping for this band to get back together, there is going to be enough demand.

Last month Death Cab For Cutie returned to the spotlight with “You Are A Tourist,” the great first single and video from their forthcoming Codes And Keys. A sunny addition to our spring playlist, it recalls brighter moments of mid-period Cure when it’s not channeling “Float On.” That’s fitting given how Ben Gibbard’s got five Cure covers in his live repertoire. In fact I can’t remember ever seeing the guy perform without hearing some other band’s song in the set. So before we gear up to collectively prematurely evaluate Codes, here’s a listen back at Ben in all his incarnations (DCFC, Postal Service, solo, with Zooey, etc) covering dozens of classics and Avril Lavigne. Mani Made Peter Hook Cry

Not really, but it’s definitely the week for old(er) music dudes to be hurting folks’ feelings. This situation with Mani and Peter Hook’s a bit harsher than Lou Reed turning Susan Boyle into mush by telling her she couldn’t cover “Perfect Day”: I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but looks like Freebass, the bass-centric group of New Order/Joy Division’s Hook, the Smiths’ Andy Rourke, and Stone cold Rose Mani, are having bigger problems than just their name: They’ve called it quits a few weeks before their debut album comes out. An album that took five years to make. Gary “Mani” Mounfield took to the tweets to air his grievances:

The Raveonettes Cover The Stone Roses

The Cass Bird & Molly Schiot-directed video for the Raveonettes’ cover of the Stone Roses’ 1989 debut opener “I Wanna Be Adored” starts with and returns to a pair of clunky green Doc Marten boots — a personal detail of the younger half of the clip’s odd couple, true, and this whole thing was put together to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the punk-beloved shoe company, Dr. Martens. On the Raveonettes last album In And Out Of Control, Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo reminded me of Jesus & Mary Chain/Phil Spector/Magnetic Fields’ Distortion. Here, they go in a different, airier direction.

DāM-FunK Covers Human League For Dr. Martens’ 50th

Dr. Martens are celebrating their 50th anniversary with a digital ad campaign designed to remind you that rock stars wear Dr. Martens. This didn’t work so well last time around. But this time they’re doing something that directly involves musicians by having 10 (or 9, really) young bands do ten covers of nu-classics. Each cover gets its own music video, and will be available as a download. The covers range from intriguing (Buraka Som Sistema covering Neneh Cherry’s “Buffalo Stance”) to, well, not (D.O.A. and Michael Davis of the MC5 covering Cold War Kids’s “Something Is Right With Me”). Put this Human League cover by DāM-FunK in the former category, especially since it’s accompanied by a nutso video from director Ace Norton. Besides furthering the director’s food obsession, the video looks like it was shot on analog tape, in a nice nod to the song’s origins, and perhaps even John Carpenter’s They Live.

If seeing Mani with Primal Scream won’t cut it, apparently John Squire finally got Ian Brown to “sign on the dotted line” for 21 dates in the UK and USA this summer. Always hearing these rumors, but let’s hope this is the one.

The Stone Roses’ Possible “Reunion” Gig

Reader Robert Z. wrote an email with the subject “Stone Roses One-off Gig?!?!” and a body consisting of the equally excited query “Is this shit true??!?!?!?” The supposed date for this reunion gig is this Friday in Manchester, and with the show so close (and nary a ripple in the music news), it seems entirely irresponsible to indulge this rumor. So let’s dig in!

The source of the wisps of excitement appears to be albumvote, which yesterday ran a story titled “Stone Roses To Reform.” So, there’s that. Only, the article makes sure to state that it will be “key members” that will reunite at Friday’s Versus Cancer benefit gig at the Manchester Evening News Arena. They reprint a quote from event organizer (and ex-Smiths bassist) Andy Rourke, told to Music News:

Both Mani and [New Order's Peter Hook] Hooky are going to be doing something with Echo and the Bunnymen, Mani’s going to be doing something with Ian Brown, and the grand finale’s going to be quite special.

So, a cautious tease of a Roses reunion finale, then? Sure enough, they’re both listed on the flyer. We’re gonna assume that Freebase — a three-bass supergroup featuring Rourke, Hook, and Mani — is playing the show, too. No official word on John Squire or Reni making the date, so avid Stone Roses watchers: How big a deal is this? Do Ian and Mani hook up often? If any of our UK readers make the gig, send us a postcard.

The music mavens at the venerable Time magazine have compiled their list of the “ALL-TIME 100″ albums — unranked and broken down by decade. We’re not sure what’s better: that only five albums of the past five years are among their 100 greatest, or that four of those five were by people who were dead before the ’00s even began. Whatever.
