Here comes new Yorke, via tracks created for a Fashion Week show by the trendy clothing label Rag & Bone. You’ve heard a bit of “Twist” before, and these streams expand the canvas a bit. You’ve also heard Thom in electronic mode before, so be advised that you are about to dip into a Yorke-pot of cut-and-paste kraut and blip and spectral moan. SNL Sends Up Thom Yorke, M.I.A., Kanye In “Bublé Duets”

SNL‘s writers and former champions made this weekend’s holiday episode a must see. Between Jimmy Fallon hosting, and the consequent cameo-returns of Weekend Updaters Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, the ever-absurd Tracy Morgan, and some charitable outreach for the less fortunate (Rachel Dratch, Horatio Sanz, and Chris Kattan) — and the fact that it was the last ep before Christmukkah — it was a particularly inspired, nostalgic 90 minutes of ’90s/early-aughts memories with old characters (the Nomar-loving Massholes) and winter traditions (Sanz, Fallon, Kattan, and Tracy singing their Casio-keyboard “Christmas Time Is Here” under fake snow; Rockefeller ice skating finalé, etc.). Jimmy even reprised his classic Mick Jagger-in-the-mirror bit, this time playing himself with Samberg playing Fallon. Explaining the premise to those who never caught it the first time was weirdly, sadly, a weekend highlight.

It wasn’t solely a late ’90s/early aughts nostalgia reel, though: this sketch with music guest Michael Bublé, owner of the country’s #1 record in his Xmas LP, brought some contemporary laughs via blog-bait music impressions. Hence, we were baited. There’s Fred Armisen as latter day, formalwear-twitcher Thom Yorke singing “Silent Night” (it’s all about the handclap as he shimmies over to Bublé); there’s Nasseem Pedrad as post-”Paper Planes” M.I.A.; Fallon goes cute as Bieber and squinty as Sting; Jay Pharaoh as Kanye stomps baby Jesus; and finally there’s Kristen Wiig, playing the surprised Taylor Swift memorialized forever in the blog post “Taylor Swift Is Surprised” by my friend, the great Rich Juzwiak (and later stolen by Jay Leno).

Last night, Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, UNKLE’s Tim Goldsworthy and Massive Attack’s 3D DJed a party benefiting the worldwide Occupy movement in the basement of an abandoned UBS, where a group of protesters have taken up an occupation. The set was rumored to be recorded and eventually posted to Occupation Record’s website; in the meantime, check out a report from the party via The Guardian.

Hey, no new Beyoncé video this week! Actually, this week’s list is pretty much entirely comprised of inventively low-budget indie rock videos (or, in a couple of cases, indie-dance videos that might as well be indie rock). They’ve got plots and costumes and ideas, and at least a couple of them were probably released right around Halloween on purpose. Each of them is essentially as good as all the others, so ranking them wasn’t easy, and there were a few — Mister Heavenly, for instance — that are practically as good but still couldn’t squeak into the list. Nice work, indie rock (and indie-dance) directors of the world!

Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood & DOOM – “Retarded Fren”

On a track with the perfectly ridiculous title “Retarded Fren,” Radiohead gentlemen Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood have hooked up with a somewhat unlikely collaborator, masked indie-rap hero DOOM. On the track, DOOM kicks his trademark slurry free-associative wordplay over wobbly bass-music subs and jittery strings that sound like they jumped straight from Greenwood’s There Will Be Blood score. Modeselektor – “Shipwreck” (Feat. Thom Yorke) Video

German production duo Modeselektor and Thom Yorke collaborated on a pair of tracks a little while back, and now “Shipwreck” has gotten a video, which features a kid with some pretty eerie, spectral capacities. Could be a good last-minute Halloween idea, provided that all of your friends hang around the Internet late on Friday afternoons and enjoy extremely specific and topical references. Tony T. Thom Yorke recently spoke with Rolling Stone‘s David Fricke, giving a few tantalizing details about the band’s forthcoming plans. He didn’t come right out and say that they’re releasing a new free album tomorrow or anything like that, but they are going back to the studio in the months ahead to work on new music.
