Spoon – “Inside Out (Tycho Remix)”

It has to be an intimidating thing to remix Spoon. You have to know, somewhere deep within yourself, that there’s no way you’re going to improve on the original; an interesting take is the best you can hope for. So credit San Francisco ambient post-rock type Tycho with having the gall to take on “InsideMore »

Tycho – “See (Beacon Remix)”

San Francisco-based ambient musician Tycho is also a visual artist, which might explain why his recordings are able to conjure vivid imagery and pair it with candid emotion. Ghostly has now released a remix of Tycho’s “See” by labelmates Beacon, which finds the track soaring through a heavenly realm even further from Earth than the… More »

Stream Tycho’s Sunrise DJ Set From Burning Man ’14

At the end of August, Tycho stopped by the 2014 edition of Burning Man to play a DJ set that began in the predawn darkness and eventually soundtracked the sunrise. Though Tycho is in full-on live band mode these days, it served as a reminder that this guy is one hell of a DJ. Thi… More »

Tycho – “Spectre” (Bibio Remix) (Stereogum Premiere)

Bibio has always been skilled in crafting electronica that has the warmth of folk music, and he has now brought that to Tycho’s “Spectre.” The original track was one of the lushest downtempo numbers to appear on his album, Awake, and this version gives it a dreamy, sunny charm that makes me hope we’ll be… More »

Tycho – “Awake (Com Truise Remix)”

Earlier this year, the downtempo producer Tycho expanded his project into a permanent trio and began touring as a live band. The results paid off, as you can hear from songs like “See” and “Spectre,” but this is still very much electronic music, which means the songs on Awake lend themselves nicely to remixes. Now… More »

Earlier this year downtempo guru Tycho released Awake (which included the hypnotic “Spectre“) and now Bradley G. Munkowitz has directed an exquisitely shot video to go along with the track “See.” In it a young woman wakes up in the forest surrounded by a series of mysterious tools, each of which she needs on a… More »

Tycho – “Spectre” (Stereogum Premiere)

Tycho is the moniker of musician (and one-off Stereogum graphic designer!) Scott Hansen. Hansen had been making music for years, but made a breakthrough in 2011 with the album Dive, a collection of deliriously smooth downtempo tracks. Tycho’s next album Awake (that’s the album art by Reuben Wu above) is due this year and now… More »

Report & Photos From FYF Fest 2012

Ever since I was old enough to complain, my dad took great pleasure in the act of dragging my always-resistant ass to music festivals. A summer full of glorious music for him meant a summer full of unstifled groans from me. His taste in music back then — folk, folk, and nothing but folk –… More »
